  • Vacation travel means stuffing a week or two of your life into one weight-limited suitcase-or at best, into the cargo space of a car. In episode #80 of The Clutter Fairy Weekly, Gayle Goddard, professional organizer and owner of The Clutter Fairy in Houston, Texas, offers pointers for right-sizing your packing to prepare for stress-free vacation travel.

I watched this video less than 48 hours before starting my trip, and just learned I was supposed to have started packing a week ago! At least my trip is of the easiest type- a weekend, and in the middle of a major US city (in case i need to buy supplies)

I just want to thank you for all the wisdom you have shared. I am helping my in-laws downsize from a home they have lived in for 45 years. I am using what I learned from you to make this as smooth a transition as possible.

Helping your in-laws is the most challenging project in a family! I'm sure they'll appreciate your efforts to make the process smoother for them. Best of luck as you near the final move!

In addition to packing (I like to pack clothes based on a color combo to help wean down the excess), I think about prepping the house for being away for a period of time. What's needed depends on the duration of the time away.

I love the feeling of going to a hotel and having clear spaces. I don't want to bring in all my stuff and spread it out everywhere. I pack what I need and just writing down a list of what I need is in itself a wonderful exercise in seeing what I don't need.

Great show.. brought back memories. In 1963 - I was 5 years old - we were moving from TN to California in the family 57 Rambler station wagon. My mother packed a wicker hamper with every medication known to mankind in it "just in case". One wrong turn later we were on the wrong side of the Mexican border with Mexican border police picking thru it. I think my mother talked them into letting us go.
    Travel tip:
My old dentist had told us that when he traveled, he just thru away his underwear rather than hauling around dirty laundry.
I put a twist on it and take my oldest worst underwear when traveling and then dispose of them after wearing.

About the underwear, I just heard a CZcamsr say she did that/ took her oldest undergarments and tossed in trash at hotel on the last night. Great idea!

I want to suggest that you pack bar shampoo and conditioner. We're told one bar is the equivalent of three bottles, so you minimize the chance you run out. Plus, they weigh next to nothing. My husband and I found a brand that is made locally that we like a lot, and use every day, not just for traveling. There are lots of options, and it's much more environmentally friendly, and also doesn't need to be pulled out of your luggage for airport screening.

Love this. My partner and I have packing down to a fine art. I have a disability and use crutches, so even when we go on a foreign holiday for 2 or 3 weeks, we need to have only one large suitcase as he has to carry/pull it. We do take a couple of 'carry on cases which he also has to pull/carry. Even with this kind of 'minimal' packing there is always something that we don't use.

Ed, apparently The Power Broker was briefly available as a Kindle book for $7.95 recently -- but no one knows why (and it's no longer available). Interesting article about it in New York magazine Curbed section a couple of days ago. I can't insert a url here, but the article is entitled, "The Power Broker Is Still Not Available As an E-Book. Except … It Is." By Christopher Bonanos. (Except...now it isn't anymore.) I see it's available as an Audible audiobook for just 1 credit (all 66 hours of it); I don't have a credit available so can't see if the whole thing is really just 1 credit. I know listening takes much longer than reading, but it's sometimes convenient for a time (and weightless). :)

Catch and release vacation planning! Ed, I wish they would make all books with larger print. I have had to go to mostly audio books.

This was timely, as I packed my suitcase while listening. I still have a lot more to do, though; 2 adults and 4 small children gone for a month, and we have to dress up more than we do at home! I am bringing the big shampoo 😄

Travel and Leisure Magazine- their #1 advice: never do activities on a vacation trip, anything you can already do at home. I took their advice and completely stopped shopping and reading on vacation. Those were distractions from my really being "present" and enjoying my new vacation surroundings, people, and experiences. Why even go on vacation, if you are just recreating your at-home life all over again?

The best advice I got while planning a 6 week trip to Europe in 2007 was to just take some basic things - 2 changes of slacks or jeans and 4 or 5 tops that could be used with any of them. Also to remember that people usually buy at least one T-shirt while they're gone and to have room for that as well as anything else purchased.

Hahahahahaha I always pack morning of my vacation, I have learned to only take the essentials in a backpack. Always do laundry night before. My theory is I can buy what I need/forgot when I get there and part of my vacationing is shopping & I always by something new to wear.

I’m having to pack my entire house because of being forced to leave my rental of 17 years. And in your mentioning travel packs, I had to giggle. I came across my zippered pack I used 20 years ago for my stay at the hospital to birth my first child.. 😁 And in it was Ghost Mist lotion and body shower. Old shampoo.. Hair spray- for which I do not use any more to get that 90s hair style. And a dried up deodorant bar. 😂 Nostalgic. Saying goodbye to a good memory is hard to do but “it no longer serves me”. 😉 My essentials now are no longer fitting a small bag because I’m putting everything into a travel suitcase., all together. No more having to hunt multiple bags and lose my last nerve.
