  • Green takes it to the house for a touchdown to help the WAshington Redkins beat the Chicago Bears. Pulls something in his stomach in the process. Madden and Summerall on the call.

Darrell Green was such a return weapon. Gibbs was very conservative about utilizing him on punt returns for fear of injury, but every time he REALLY needed a big play, he'd tap Darrell to go make it happen. In case of emergency, break glass and bring out the great DG!!!

@@bnegs521 he had torn cartilage in his ribs and had to get a shot before the start of the nfc championship game to play the following week. Jeff Bostic tells that story really well on the NFL Network episode about the 87 Redskins. And he made the game winning stop at the goal line that following week on a 4th and goal at the end of the game breaking up a potential TD pass.

It wasn’t even the vault that tore the cartilage, but the sudden cut to his left. He said so in an interview, but announcer still always say it was the vault.
You can see that Green running at half speed is still pulling away from everyone, so a half superpowered Darrell Green is still faster than 50% of the other players in the league at that time.

Washington Redskins were a true team everyone was a roll player and egos never were placed ahead of team (not if you wanted to stay in town) this team was the weakest of the championship teams, injuries slowed the running game, quarterback controversy, but the lines and the defense carried them. Skins fans remember Darryl Greene in the playoffs and the replacement team on Monday night football as much as Doug Williams and the super bowl

Everybody talks about the 6 QB's taken in the first round, but don't forget that Darrell Green was also drafted in the first round right after Dan Marino.
