- During the college fotball game between Iowa and Minnesota, Iowa thought they had taken the lead with under two minutes after a Cooper DeJean punt return touchdown. However, after a lengthy review, the play was overturned as DeJean slightly waved his arm before catching the ball. Iowa then threw an interception and lost by a score of 12-10.

Good call.

Obvious to anyone who knows any better
Iowa was robbed.
The fact that this wasn't called on the field, but was reviewable is what confuses me. When is that ever the case. They miss calls all the time that aren't reviewable.
Every TD is automatically reviewed that's why the refs were able to go back the penalty. Either way it honestly could have gone either for both teams considering the wave was kinda iffy as well as the reactions of Minnesota if he did wave fair catch is kinda suspicious.
I'm accustomed to this sort of thing happening in a Monday night game between Minnesota and Green Bay, but the ruling going the other way. @@jeremiahhatfield6324

Such an elite defense in Iowa and it's being wasted by one of the worst offenses in the country.
I feel like rhatçs what Iowa's been since I started paying attention in 1990. Always a good defensive front and often good offensive lines but never any good skill position offensive players. Who have they had? Tim Dwight is the only skilled guy I remember.

An invalid fair catch signal is defined as “any waving signal” by a member of the receiving team that does not meet the requirements of a valid fair catch signal. To make a valid fair catch signal, a player must wave his arm over his head.
Which he didn't wave above his head, therefore no fair catch, so he's allowed to run
@@poisonpotato1Still an invalid waving signal
@@poisonpotato1 Haha...no. He made a waving motion with his arm and hand which did not meet the requirements of being a fair catch. Therefore it was an invalid fair catch signal. The only way a punt returner can legally run with the ball is to make NO waving signal, valid or invalid. Doing what he did at one time resulted in a 15 yard penalty on the receiving team.
@@timmick6911in that case, you cannot swing your arms as you run to catch a punt. Use some logic
@@timmick6911 so by that definition, a player running and waving his arms, not above his head but in the act of running (which everyone does that I’ve ever seen) is now an invalid waving signal? Your logic is illogical.

At one time, an invalid fair catch included a penalty for 15 yards as well.
The most Iowa game that ever Iowa'd
The Minnesota radio play-by-play announcer said, "The Gophers have outIowa'd Iowa."
Fun fact: this is the only time in cfb or nfl history that an invalid fair catch signal has been called on replay review. This also one of only a few times it has been called on a bouncing ball (which can't be fair caught). It is now the rarest penalty call in the history of football.
I am a Wisconsin fan, a few years back we had a game-winning kick return TD called back for the same reason - I believe vs Northwestern. Our guy waved in a downward motion to tell his team to stay away and they called it an invalid signal after his TD. I know it stings because those are huge plays.
It was a game changer that's for sure.
I remember that a little bit, I think it was against either Northwestern or Michigan. Did not hear the end of it after church the following day.
@warc8us It wouldn't sting if it didn't change the outcome of the game. That was so unbelievable. I have to stop thinking about it because it just spins me into an entirely new level of pissed off. To everyone who said it was the correct call, that wasn't even what was being reviewed, and if it was a rule, why did it take them close to 15 minutes to make their ruling? I know it won't bother me forever, it's just that our offense has no offense. Our defense and special teams are the ones who are scoring. It is so frustrating. I've never known Iowa to be so pathetic when it came to the QB except for Ricky Stanzi. He sucked, but he wasn't even this bad.
So where's the whistle.. since when do we wait for a clutch play to actually work and we pull a bs technicality after the TD.. if it's a dead play how come not a songle official blee his whistle.. its bs all of it and im a husker fan
@@RawUncutFishing It's been 8 days now, and I finally quit letting it ruin my day on Friday. I don't think I've ever been that pissed off for that long before that happened. I've had to read so many comments about it being "the correct call" that I was ready to punch holes in a wall, but I finally let it go. The fact that not only were there no whistles, no flags, no screaming fits by Fleck or the rest of his team, just feeling dejected as they saw their win going down the drain after Coop made it into the end zone, like us, Minnesota was anxious to hear what the review was, and when they made it, PJ got totally pissed off over the Iowa fans throwing crap onto the field that I don't think he realized what a gift he had been given. At least we still had possession of the ball, and only needed 20 yards to make a field goal. I can't remember if it was the first or second play, but we threw an interception, and at that point, it was Minnesota's game to lose. They got to enjoy a feeling that hadn't happened since 1999, so there were some people who were thrilled with the outcome that day, and I'm happy for them. If our offense sucks this bad next year, I pray we find somebody who can build our offense to what it once was. Brian Ferentz was tasked with rebuilding our offense or he would be penalized where it hit him hardest, and he hasn't risen to the occasion yet this year.

I played football through HS and 1 year in D1. This is coached on special teams all the time. Refs even yell out “fair catch” when a receiver does it so that players that may not be totally watching don’t hit the player.
Had a Minnesota player pancaked him to the ground, Iowa fans would be screaming that it was obviously a fair catch motion even if he did it improperly.
my son plays college football and is on the punt team. he confirmed that an emphasis was made this year for absolutely no arm/hand movement by the return man. he can point all he wants but once he uses motion, it is an infraction. so, blame the coaching staff and the player.
If you don't throw a flag or blow a whistle there was no infraction
@@user-ii7do6gy4e The flag not being thrown is not some sort of get out of jail free loophole. The entire reason they started using the replay review and challenge system is because sometimes refs miss things or see something wrong and throw the flag by mistake.
A similar call was made against Tennessee in the Bama game. One punt returner waved his hand similar to this, but the returner to his left actually returned the punt. Officials brought the ball back to the 4 yard line instead of starting at the 34. It was reviewed as well.

Does anyone know when this rule was added? UNT did the exact same thing in 2018 vs Arkansas and this was not called
The rule was made cause guys used to "feint" fair catch signals to get free pick ups and returns and so it was deemed unfair and made a fule that motioning anything that can be assumed a fair catch kills the ball
I doubt that. I think the rule was made to prevent deception on caught kicks, because those are the ones where guys aren't allowed to hit you. You cannot fair catch a football that has bounced. What would the strategy be in faking a fair catch and then letting it bounce so that guys can tackle you as soon as you touch it? Sounds like a recipe for turnovers, not extra tds.
Doesn't really matter. This call didn't prevent Iowa from winning. They still had a minute and 47 seconds to push the ball 30 yards. They turned the ball over. The interception caused by their pathetic offense did them in.

Usually Punt returners do *"instinctly"* wave for a fair catch near the sidelines to avoid getting creamed. The Gopher players was surrounding him for a possible fumble. Not a run back.
Besides, it doesn't help the instant replay started when the punt returner caught the ball. Not from the middle of the field to the ball. It's also obvious the two guys in the booth was clueless. They wondered if he stepped out of bounds. Not if the retuner signal for a faur catch. Which he did. Making the play dead when he caught the ball.
They better start calling that on all games because I’ve seen other players do it. Refs are always trying to change outcome of games when they want.

Only if the referee calls it initially. You can't go back and officiate a play like that after the initial play is over with. Otherwise stop after every play, and go back and look for infractions after every single play, I'm sure there's missed calls in almost all plays. The issue everyone has is that it wasn't what the review was initially supposed to look at. Seems that whoever initiated the review was expecting to find that he stepped out on the return, and when that didn't happen, they went to the hands.
They were reviewing to see if he stepped out. Under replay rules this part is also reviewable.
They didn’t stop the game and say let’s find something wrong here.
@@thomaspaquette9991 I'm not saying either way, but really it's obvious that he was not signaling a fair catch or even had reason to do so. At the time of the left hand waving he is 15 yards from the ball. But worst of all, the referees didn't know the rule. They didn't blow the whistle until much later, and even then they said they were looking to see if he went out of bounds. Even ESPN, when describing it later, misstated the rule.
The lack of blowing the whistle is the problem here. It shows the official clearly did not think the returner was signaling for a fair catch. Should not be reevaluated in the video review. Obviously it’s not a penalty, but it would be a dead ball situation that was not called on the field.

ARTICLE 4. Reviewable plays involving kicks include:

b. Player beyond the neutral zone when kicking the ball.
c. Kicking team player advancing a ball after a potential muffed kick/fumble
by the receiving team.
d. Scrimmage kick crossing the neutral zone.
e. Blocking by players of the kicking team before they are eligible to touch
the ball on an on-side kick.
f. A player touching or recovering a kick or loose ball who is or has been out

*g. Receiving team advancing after a fair catch signal.*
It was an illegal fair catch signal. Same effect as a legal signal.
Regardless of the fair catch call, the defensive players went after him full steam and missed. If the defensive players started walking away from the runner, I would say, they interpreted it as a fair catch signal, but the didn't, they were going after him. Hell of a run.
Wow! Heard some crazy penalties this year.
Well at least some people outside of Iowa will have heard of Cooper DeJean now
I'm digging them Yellow jerseys
1. His hand never goes above his shoulders which is required for the call to be an invalid fair-catch.
If his hand had gone above his shoulder, different story, but it didn't.
2. If it had been an invalid fair-catch, there should have been at least 1 penalty for late hit since touching the ball on an invalid fair-catch constitutes a dead ball. About 9 people tried to tackle him within 2 seconds of him touching the ball. No flags.
3. No whistles. Not one official blew a whistle to signal dead ball which is what comes with an invalid fair-catch.
4. Two referees signaled touchdown as he crossed the goal line. They do not this when a dead ball is signaled or a whistle is blown as the whistle constitutes end of play.
Basically, they called it a TD, went back to review if he stepped out, and decided during the review that he made an invalid fair-catch.
HOWEVER, where they really screwed up was not calling the penalty for a dead ball foul for late hit.
Would have given Iowa 10 more yards.
Also, here is the literal description from the NCAA rule book:
"FAIR CATCH SIGNAL
Article 2
Item 1: Valid Fair-Catch SignalA fair-catch signal is valid if it is made while the kick is in flight by a
player who fully extends one arm above his helmet and waves it from side to side. A receiver is
permitted to legally raise his hand(s) to his helmet to shield his eyes from the sun, but is not permitted
to raise them above his helmet except to signal for a fair catch.
Item 2: Invalid Fair-Catch. If a player raises his hand(s) above his shoulder(s) in any other
manner, it is an invalid fair-catch signal. If there is an invalid fair-catch signal, the ball is dead when
caught or recovered by any player of the receiving team, but it is not a fair catch. (The ball is not dead
if it touches an opponent before or after it strikes the ground. See Article 3b)."
Not sure if you're looking at an old version or just making stuff up:
Valid Signal
ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player of Team B who has
obviously signaled their intention by extending one hand only clearly above
their head and waving that hand from side to side of their body more than
once.
Invalid Signal
ARTICLE 3. An invalid signal is any waving signal by a player of Team B:
a. That does not meet the requirements of Article 2 (above)

I also graduated there in 42, as well 98. I don't remember you! Must be because I'm 100 yrs old
What part of you guys ain't that good are y'all having such a hard time understanding. You really think if you get to the championship game Ohio, Michigan or Penn ain't gonna beat you 61-2? Gophers Win
@@jonossell121 Having trouble comprehending what you said
I'm a Minnesota guy so I have been razzing a lot of the comments from Iowa people. Only thing I find annoying and I shouldn't because I have been laughing for almost two hours now is that your team is not that good, you know they are not that good, everyone in the Big Ten knows their not that good and it was only a matter of time before another team that is not that good beat you. Nothing personal sorry if I was mean
@jonossell121 Sorry as well. I know you want my comeback but it's currently on your Mom's chin
Same thing happened in the UT vs Bama game.
Are iowa people really that thick they would support the criminal trump? Are Iowa people really that soft in the head.
Not sure what all the fuss is about. It seemed rather obvious that the returner tried to deceive the opposing team by windmilling his arm. Was a good call in my book..
If it’s a bad call, why was he moving his left arm like that?
NCAA rule: Invalid Signals-ARTICLE 3 V: Team A's scrimmage kick is rolling beyond the neutral zone when B17 alerts his teammates to stay away from the ball by a "get away" signal.
RULING: Invalid signal. The ball is dead by rule when either team recovers.
WE DON'T CARE ABOUT YOUR RULEBOOK !!! EVERYBODY KNOWS HE DIDN'T SIGNAL A FAIR CATCH !!! EVEN THE MINNESOTA PLAYERS KNEW HE DIDN'T SIGNAL A FAIR CATCH !!! WE KNOW BECAUSE WE IOWA FANS ARE MIND READERS !!! - Iowa fans.
@@jky3889 You’re right, he didn’t signal a fair catch at all. He told everyone to get away from the ball, which makes it a dead ball after contact.
idc if this didnt count still a hell of a return by dejean, i dont wanna see nobody blaming him hes the front and back to his terrible team
I agree. One helluva an athletic display. I believe he had it in mind that this needed to be a 6 pt punt return and he was signaling for his teammates to stay upfield to block for him as he took it to the house No iota of blame on him, that would be ridiculous. He wasnt even trying to cheat or get away with some type of fake fair catch as someone stated earlier. An unfortunate technicality during his execution. Simple as that. This guys gonna be fun to watch on Sundays 4:38
Iowa amassed only 2 total offensive yards the 2nd half
But sadly, MississippiState-vs-Arkansas received the B10 Score Award for the week. Iowa-Minnesota got robbed.
Huge win for Punters!
They were calling it , an , invalid affair catch signal.
Don't cheat on your wife man. Bad Ju Ju
A win is a win is a good excuse for Iowa having no offense but when they lose, it doesn't sound so profound, does it?
Are iowa people really that thick they would support the criminal trump? Are Iowa people really that soft in the head. Just trolling. You need to be trolled.
Unfortunate timng. He was waving to the kids across the street.
I have no dog on this fight. I woke up this morning on the east coast and turned on the TV. First replay I see is this punt return. Not for one second did I think a fair catch was being signaled. Just another example of so called officials over officiating to stroke their personnel egos.
I don't give a shit about either team cause I'm a Florida fan, but that call is horrid. If this was somehow legit, there would need to be a penalty for the entire Minnesota team disrupting a fair catch
Well no one gives a sh!+ what your opinion is...because, well you're a Florida fan.
Exactly. Nothing about this makes sense
It wasn't a fair catch though. It was an invalid fair catch signal. The point is that if the returner is waving their arm, it can impact how the kicking team plays because they may slow down and assume the play will be over. It's a penalty, not a fair catch.
@@violetly_yeah no one with eyes would say it impacted the play.
That's 100% a judgement call and their judgement was trash.
Literally no one would have complained if they never even looked at the play for that call.
No it would not, because the ball is dead as soon as it is controlled, and running after the fair catch, even a valid one, removes the protections.
I have never seen this in 20 something years of watching football. Crazy it takes off basically a walk off TD
Your first game?
@@hitman9198 did you not read my comment? What other game comes to mind where waving off a punt killed a return, let alone after they let the play run out without blowing it dead?
@@Jasper118 it's happened before. Lol someone in comments said an example. You're just bitching and moaning over a well written rule. The funny part is Iowa lost to Fleck's worst team by far and Minnesota didn't even score a touchdown. Lol but let's blame the refs on a ticky tak play. But not the fact the offense is historically bad.
@@hitman9198 I never watched a snap of Iowa football I have no dog in this fight other than being a fan of football, so no I’m not just bitching because Iowa lost. This is plain stupid and has to only be an NCAA rule because nfl returners do this all the time. The fact they let it play out is even worse, if the red didn’t notice it real time then obviously the arm waving wasn’t significant enough so why reverse it on review? Dumb rule and it erased an all time clutch play from the football world over ticky tack nonsense
@@Jasper118 all time clutch lol. You do realize it's Minnesota right? Not Alabama or Georgia lol.
"Under further review, I actually had Minnesota ML. Therefore, I rule the play dead. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul"
That is the first time I have ever seen that call....
I don't even know how I would handle this if I was an Iowa fan....
Certainly not be upset with the officials for making the correct call!
i'm pounding beers
Watching the replay a few times, it does appear that the MN players are backing off. Then as soon as the KR makes a move, they recover and try to make the tackle.
But they weren't flying toward the ball as the kicking team usually does. Could be wrong, but it does seem the players were thinking it was a fair catch, in the beginning.
It's their fault they thought the movement of his arm just from running was a "fair catch signal"
@@BrugerQing Maybe so. But that’s the first thing they’d be telling the refs-“he was signaling a fair catch”. The announcers were a little perplexed at why the play was being reviewed at all; he was never close to being out of bounds and the line judge was right there. But if they were looking to see if he was making movements with his hands that would have slowed down the cover team, it makes more sense.
They still had time to get into field goal range. Poor form to blame the officials because the punt returner screwed up and then they couldn't move the ball into field goal range.
My, my, good midwestern-folk throwing trash onto the field; and all these years listening to the sports media, I thought only people in Philly and NY did things like that.
The very same people who were waving at the PICU patients in Stead Family Hospital. Wonder who was having the worst day: Iowa fans or the terminally ill children? Perspective, people. Perspective.
This is pretty on brand for Iowa fans
I'm not an Iowa fan, and I was pissed.
Pissed about what? The returner making an invalid fair catch signal in a pivotal moment in the game?
Invalid inshmalid. Dude was pointing people off. It's a crock that ref would influence the outcome of a game that way. The same way the crew in Houston screwed them against Texas right after. No one else on the field, even the gunners for Minn saw a fair catch as they all went for him. They can call it what they want. What I can say is if they are gonna call horse manure calls like that, there needs to be a definitive signal for a fair catch. As in the hand needs to be head level or above.
@@cajunsmurf4354 he was waving his arm, that is such a basic rule that every returner knows!
@packfan6151 "waving" i never have seen someone "wave" with 1 finger pointed out. If it was soooo obvious how come no ref called the ball dead at the time? Again you can feel the way you want....just like me. I have a very short fuse when it comes to refs/umps deciding a game with such a call from personal experiences starting 30 years ago. So in my eyes the refs are always the screw ups
@@cajunsmurf4354
"...even the gunners for Minn saw a fair catch as they all went for him."
Possibly. But what is the punt returner supposed to NOT do after signaling a fair catch? And what did the Iowa punt returner do?
"there needs to be a definitive signal for a fair catch. As in the hand needs to be head level or above."
There is...and it's pretty much what you said. That why any waving motion not above the head is called an "invalid fair catch signal".
This really isn't that hard.
He was yelling and pointing at where the ball was rolling, he never waved his hands above his head like a typical fair catch, also the Minnesota team knew he did not call a fair catch because they immediately tried to tackle him.
That's why they said it was an invalid fair catch not he called fair catch I assume.
0:09-0:11 He is waving his hands mimicing a fair catch signal. It is technically not above his head but still looks just like a fair catch wave making it an "invalid fair catch signal." In the case of an invalid fair catch signal, the offense cannot advance the ball.
Doesn't have to wave it over his head. Any waving motion triggers a dead spot
@@15jtbballhe always did that though, the refs should’ve called it the plays before
Speaking of firing and benching the Gophers might want to get rid of their whole punting team. How do five guys barely lay a hand on the kid on a two square yard patch of field six or seven inches from the sideline which is actually defender no. six. Then after Hestering his way out of there goes untouched the rest of the way with only one gopher in camera view. The win saved their scholarships
I love the kid on the field wafting thst fart in the refs face
Agree or disagree. Doesn’t change anything.
The more I look at this the more I agree with the call.
Didn't see fair catch signal so why was it called back?
Vegas. People who bet iowa when they punted at 2 mins stood to make a lot of money. Couldn't let that happen
Invalid fair catch. Good call by rule
@@meatmeat5344it was actually the right call
@@Bestsportseditz twice you've said this. Wrong both times. He was waiving people off. Happens all the time. And even if you want to say it was, it would still be a penalty on Minnesota for making contact on a fair catch. On top of that, it was never blown dead. They only called it after seeing it on replay.
@@meatmeat5344 if you make a signal under your helmet it’s a invalid fsir catch signal.

It was a bad call and Iowa should have won without it being called.

From a Badger fan and former referee.
Just a awful, awful call. Makes you wonder if some games are fixed
I'm a Michigan fan. Objectively, this is not a fair catch. Hi hands did not go above his shoulders to signal. He was clearly telling his blocker to hold and clear out which is a very common practice at all levels of the game.
It is common to do that, yes, but when you do that you by signaling with your arms you can't then advance the ball.
It wasn't ruled a fair catch. It was ruled an INVALID fair catch for that exact reason.
B10er making up sh!t again. The rulebook doesn't say anything about the shoulders. A legal fair catch signal is waving your hand above your head. An illegal signal is waving your hand around without meeting the legal signal requirement and has the same effect as a legal signal, so the ball can't be advanced.
That call back was made an official seeking a way to nullify the score.
How many NFL games have had something like this happen? Just wondering.
