There were actually hints of Charlie’s eating disorder sprinkled throughout season 1 too. Letting his cereal go soggy without eating it, refusing popcorn at the cinema, refusing pizza from Tori, being MIA at multiple lunchtimes (not eating with Nick OR Tao and Isaac), opening and closing his lunchbox without eating anything while hiding out in the art room… You wouldn’t notice them you weren’t looking for red flags though, which is pretty accurate to how EDs can fly under the radar irl. I think seeing Charlie at three meals a day in Paris makes the problem more obvious to Nick, and harder for Charlie to keep hiding.
Without spoiling too much, the underlying roots of Charlie’s illness are a little different from the more common and stereotypical portrayals of EDs in media. You’ll get some hints at that in the next episode, and the show will definitely dig deeper into it in season 3! As you say, EDs are quite serious and not something that can be quickly resolved for Charlie without professional help.

I love how, when Imogen asks for a hug, Nick looks at Charlie who gives him this little nod like; "Go on." Like, given Nick almost went on a date with her at one point, it's so nice of him to make sure Charlie is OK with it - and then pull Charlie into a group hug. Nick is just so considerate of both Charlie and Imogen here.😊😊

Definitely! And that Nick Nelson hug looked medicinal. I’m glad Charlie joined - that mirror shot of the three of them purging the stinky Ben energy with a beautiful group hug is one of my favorite visuals from Season 2.

Fun fact about Ben talking to Charlie in the restaurant......that's the first time Ben has EVER acknowledged Charlie's existence, even though they had been making out for months before Charlie dumped him. I think he's trying a "charm" offensive to get back in Charlie's good graces. I think he's also taking advantage of Charlie's "let's not draw attention to you by sitting separately" approach to sit next to him. It's clear that Ben was using Imogen, both for cover for his queerness, but more so to get under Nick's skin and piss him off.

    • @elisabethbauman6190

Yeah, it’s so skeezy that he says, “I haven’t talked to you properly in ages” after forcefully denying having ever spoken to Charlie at every previous opportunity when other people were around. Poor Charlie - he looks like he wishes his food would swallow HIM up and make the whole mess disappear.

I may be overthinking this, but, i kinda felt that Imogen's public break up was the safest thing she could have done. Charlie tried to do it quietly, privately and Ben forced himself on him... abusers instinctively know, not in view not in public and i kind of felt that Imogen sensed this. Dumping him loudly, in public, Ben's behaviour was immediatly called out by garbage king harry (of all people!) So proud of that girl for this, and Narlie being there to support her.

I really appreciate your willingness to learn more about ED's before talking too much about it. They are very serious and conversations like this can be very triggering for people.
Its often assumed that ed's are about weightloss and looks but while body dismorphia (an inability to accurately perceive ones own body) is a big part of it, its not about aesthetics. Anorexia, orthorexia etc are closely linked to anxiety disorders/ obsessive compulsive disorder, and are often more about being in control. The need to restrict is a compulsion even when the sufferer wants to recover and be healthy

Despite the demurrers, Imogen did out Ben. Afterwards, she realized she shouldn't have done that, but you do things you later regret when you're angry. Being said to be "obsessed" with a known gay boy coupled with being accused of totally ignoring your supposed girlfriend can only mean one thing: I'm telling everyone you're gay. Honestly, imagine yourself at that table and watching Charlie and Ben's reactions while that little drama played-out. You'd have to be incredibly naive not to realise what Imogen was saying. It's clear Imogen also knew/strongly suspected it because of Ben's stare on the bus and general non-interest in her while in Paris. Nick may even have set the stage for her when he tried to warn her off Ben earlier. Here we have a known gay/bi person telling Imogen she shouldn't be going out with Ben because of something he can't really tell you about. Ben only made a grab for her when he saw Nick, and that annoyed her. Clearly, Ben was using Imogen to get back at Nick. If you're Imogen, you might ask yourself why is that? Could it be because of Charlie? Imogen even intimated she knew Ben and Charlie were an item right before she, Nick and Charlie had their group hug. Although I don't blame Charlie or Nick for going after Imogen subsequent to the blow-up, it did sort of underscore what Imogen said. Also, if anyone was watching, Nick gave himself away with his body language when Ben sat next to Charlie etc. Clearly at least some of the group understood the import of what Imogen said because when they were playing that ancient but dangerous game of "truth or dare," someone commanded Ben to kiss Charlie. They were cycling through all the known gay boys. Being outed is at least partly to blame, I suspect, for Ben subsequently changing schools.

Body dysmorphia is the more widely understood reason for eating disorders, but they can also stem from stress and how that affects you physically. If you’re upset, often, you probably lose your appetite. Sadly, eating disorders are pervasive within the gay community with numerous media and ads usually depicting thin-muscular as “ideals.” Normal-overweight being less desirable or fetishes. It is a dog-eat-dog world for everyone lol. Looking back on season 1, Charlie is rarely, if at all, shown eating. At the movie theater, he opts out of eating popcorn.

Sahar is briefly in the comics. This might be controversial but, TBH, I found her a kind of pointless addition to the friend group.
All her lines could have easily been delivered by Darcy. I think it may have been a diversity add (speaking as a diverse person). I liked this season but I think they threw too many new characters in for 8 short episodes. The art school friends, Nick's brother, Mr.Farouk,
