  • Not much to say about this one really other than I thought it would be quite interesting to show how the VFR carbs are balanced as well as give you some pointers on doing the job on any bike that runs carbs.
    Enjoy.

    Speaking (typing) as an ex Honda Motorcycle mechanic, I'm all in favour of these how to videos. More please!
    And the best thing about balancing carbs that wasn't mentioned, but applies to the inline four engines, that bloody awful grinding noise at idle vanishes to sewing machine smooth when the carbs are correctly balanced!
    Cheers,
    Norm.

      inline 4's seem to make a resonating sound when not balanced? it's hard to describe the sound something like a resonance or an echo...anyway they just don't sound right. i put it down to out of sync carbs..

    • @AndyPat239
      @AndyPat239 Před 3 měsíci +1

      to be more specific i wonder if it could be an imbalance between 1/3 and 2/4 given they work in pairs like on this vee 4

    • @NormanNodDunbar
      @NormanNodDunbar Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@AndyPat239 I dont think so. We used to have to adjust all four carbs to a specific vacuum pressure. There wasn't any instructions in the manual about getting 1 and 3 or 2 and 4 balanced together in pairs. Each carb had its own adjuster as opposed to the V4 having one for each pair plus one for the two pairs. HTH.

  • @edgar9651

    Thanks. I had a VFR and at some point, there was a bad CLAC noise when I started it in the morning. The noise was only there once in the morning. Every morning. Luckily, I had a guy who was specialized on the VFR. The problem was the tank valve. It is supposed to be closed if there is no vacuum on the attached tube. In my case that valve malfunctioned, it was always open. The result of that is that (in my case at night) a little fuel was flowing into the carbs, and from there into the cylinders. And that resulted in that bad CLAC noise when I started it.
    I used to repair smaller bikes when I was young. I never would have guessed that that noise might be the result from that bad tank valve. I would never have found that problem myself.
    I hope this is helpful for someone else with the same problem.

    • @jamesgregg4466
      @jamesgregg4466 Před 3 měsíci +3

      Not sure if this is the same thing, but the VFR had a common problem in that the diaphragm in the fuel tap degraded - I think there was an air vacuum pipe to it for it to open when needed but it didn't always work. I remember having to run on reserve all the time else it would konk out from fuel starvation - and then eventually I took the diaphragm out altogether and ran without. Some good memories with this bike, I had a R6 after this but still preferred the NC30, it was a great bike.

    • @Angel-rg9dh
      @Angel-rg9dh Před 3 měsíci

      Tank valve you mean the taps that open and close the fuel lines? My ktm does that sometimes when the bike is cold, usually in the morning or anytime you pick it up after many hours being stopped, it pops as soon as you start it just a few times and even you can hear some clac or small explosion in the carburetor. Did you have those symptoms ? Just for me to know where to look! Thanks

    • @edgar9651
      @edgar9651 Před 3 měsíci

      @@Angel-rg9dh In my case, with my VFR, there was no issue with the carburetors. The tank valve can be opened and closed by turning it. In addition, with the VFR, there is a hose attached to the tank valve. The valve is supposed only to open if there is a vacuum on that hose. The hose is shown in the video above. In my case the tank valve was also open when there was no vacuum. And that caused above-described problem. When I described that bad noise to my VFR specialist, he recognized the problem right away. So it seems that is a common problem with VFRs (and maybe also other bikes).

    • @aussiebloke609
      @aussiebloke609 Před 3 měsíci

      @@edgar9651 It does sounds like a bit of a carb problem as well. While the vacuum valve should shut off the fuel petcock automatically, the needle and seat in the carbs also should prevent fuel from running through the carbs (shutting off the petcock is usually considered a safety feature in case of a carb problem, but really shouldn't be a requirement for everyday use.)

    • @ioandragulescu6063
      @ioandragulescu6063 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@Angel-rg9dh I don't know if it's relevant but one cold autumn morning, last year, I arrived at my dealer and they had all the KTMs running. The suzukis and the yamahas weren't, just the KTMs. I got a bit suspicious and asked one of the guys there but he just said "oh we just want them warm if customers come and want a test ride". But still, only the KTMs. And these were all new bikes mind you. My completely subjective belief is that KTMs are more sensitive if not operating at ideal temperatures, probably because they are more high performance than other bikes. I mean compared to other bikes in their categories, I think they have the highest amount of HP/CC and that probably comes with some drawbacks.

    I'd heard about having to balance carbs but had no idea how it was done. I watched some other channel where the guy has a business restoring classic cars and he gets in there with a length of tubing and he sticks it into the carb air intake and the other end at his ear. No idea how that works but the end result seemed to be good. He did two V12 Lamborghini engines that were on a Riva Lamborghini classic speedboat and they sounded epic.
    I think it was called Tyrrell's Classic Workshop.
