How to make a Pin Cushion Scrap Bag

  • Fun Project Series #1 - if you do a lot of sewing, then you'll love this little project! You can make it with a couple of fat quarters, or with fabric scraps - and it will keep your sewing area neat and clean. PLEASE NOTE: The sizes for the pin cushion and the hinge have been reversed in the video - (bad editing on my part!) So to clarify: The pin cushion piece is 7" x 8" and the hinge piece is 8" x 4 1/2". Your finished pin cushion (after it is stuffed) should measure approximately 7" x 4" and your hinge after it is finished should measure 4" x 4 1/2". The scrap bag is 9" x 16" and so is the liner. The boning is 3/4" in width and is cut 18" long. You can make your own boning by cutting it out of an old plastic jug! Have fun with this project!

THANK YOU for this tutorial!! I wanted to make one of these so badly, and I watched two other videos to see how to do it, but I could not understand their instructions!! I thought I was the only one who couldn’t figure it out & felt so stupid because all of their comments were “thank you for this tutorial, I can’t wait to make one!!” Lol! But, I found your video & decided to try to figure it out one more time, and I’m so happy that I did because I understood perfectly what you were saying and showing, so now I am going tomorrow to get what I need to make my own. Guess I’m not completely hopeless after all!! Thank you so much for your easy to understand instructions and demonstration!! ♥️

The Masquerade Just wanted to report that it was a smashing success! Turned out beautifully, and I love it. In case someone needs an idea for filler for the pincushion, I used sand from the Dollar Tree. It took approximately one and a half bags, more or less. Thank you again for your wonderful way of explaining the steps for this project; it’s greatly appreciated!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I know what you mean, some people don’t really know how to articulate what they want to say. This makes it very difficult to follow their instructions. I have seen several videos on how to make these, this is much easier to understand.

Excellent tutorial. The little tips as you go along are really helpful, especially for filling the pincushion with the walnut shells.
Instead of boning I am going to cut a spiral strip from a plastic yogurt tub.

Great idea! Make sure it is long enough to overlap a couple inches, or the bag will just hang down instead of standing out.😉 sometimes I cut plastic strips from gallon milk jugs, too!

Thank you for sharing your time and creativity to make this tutorial. Love your design - the addition of boning is genius! Ideas for something similar have been floating around in my head for a while and slowly coming together. Now, I can add my ideas to your design! I will make the top pincushion magnetic to hold my snip-eze curved blade embroidery scissors (fantastic for snipping threads - especially if you have arthritis), long tweezers, seam guide, errant pins, clips, zipper feet, machine needles and small paper cutting scissors (prevents that BAD thought of: "I know I shouldn't, but it can't hurt my expensive embroidery scissors to cut this paper/plastic/cellophane ONE time"). ☹ I plan to line my scrap bag with vinyl, hoping the threads will not cling as they will with fabric. Plus I am adding a zipper opening at the bottom to allow easy emptying w/o disturbing my tools/pins/clips at the top. This is about the third project on my mental sewing list, so it has time to refine a bit more. Thanks again for a great tutorial. -m

Thankyou for the great tutorial. I wanted to make some hanging tubs to collect the endless sewing scraps and loose threads, I used the thin plastic strapping you get on new white goods instead of boning as that's what I had. I sewed long ribbons coming out of the hinge to hang the tub from a hook. I didn't make the pincushion but may in the future. I might make some hanging tubs with toiletries for gifts. Many thanks

    • @TheMasquerade

I've actually made one for one of my sergers that didn't come with a thread catcher! I just eliminated the pin cushion and attached a "no slip" pad to the hinge instead. The pad is just a piece of fabric with rubber shelving grip attached to the bottom and serged all the way around. It shouldn't take you more than 15 minutes to whip one up! ;)

I made a funnel using a 16 oz. soda bottle. After I drank my soda and rinsed the bottle, I cut of the bottle portion, leaving about 3" for the "bowl" part of the funnel. It has a wider opening than a paper funnel, so I made sure to leave the opening to my project big enough to fit the bottle's opening. The larger opening is also perfect for when I make bean bags. Thanks for this great tutorial!

Thanks to your clear & easy to follow instructions, I feel I can successfully do this. Thank you again & super cute fabric!

LOL, I've made so many of them I think I've lost count! I give them as gifts and put one next to each of my machines in my studio and the class room. Glad you had fun!

I have one of these and I love it. I use the pin cushion for pins and the bag for my wonder clips. I don't know what I would do without it..

Hi again! No problem with the measurements for me but I thought about new sewers! I like the idea of using grosgrain ribbon for the hinge Thanks so much. Love yr videos. Xxx

Dear Donna, I could not wait to make this Scrap Bag. I did view other tutorials and yours is the best. You may not notice but in the very beginning you have the hing and pin cushion measurements switched. Later on you correct yourself but do not mention the error in the beginning. Hopefully others will catch it, also. I like your beach blanket, also. Love the idea and want to give them as gifts.

Thanks Kathy! The switch was pointed out to me when I first posted the video - but once it's posted I can't change it. I think there are comments made regarding the correct measurements - but people have to scroll to find them. I guess that's what happens when I edit my videos at 2am! LOL I've been trying to be more vigilant lately - but I always welcome constructive criticism! Have fun sewing!!

I have one I bought from a friend that I absolutely love. It's especially dear to me since she passed away. She told me how to do it, but I'm more a visual learner, and when I found some fabric today with someone in mind I couldn't ask her how she made mine. I finished up the first & I'm halfway through another. You're an excellent teacher! I subscribed, and I'm looking forward to following along to more of your tutorials. Just had to come back and say thank you again so much for sharing!! 😊

Thanks Leslie! I've made so many if these little pin cushion scrap bags that I've lost count. I give them away as gifts, too. Hope you enjoy the rest of my tutorials as you work through them. Right now I'm working on a little paper piecing quilt project using an antique hand crank machine. So much fun! You might want to check out facebook.com/themasqueradenh to see more of what I do and share.

The Masquerade That explains why you're so great at it. You whipped through that like nobody's business lol I tend to overthink, and over complicate things . So, I really appreciate and enjoyed how very simple you made the process. Oh, your current project sounds like so much fun! I'm excited to check it out. Thank you so much! Keep up the great work of inspiring! 😊
