I really like Mr. Lozenski's idea of teachers and educators needing to take that leap toward new ways of teaching and working, in our education system. As times change, so should our ways of teaching students.

I am here from my Teaching Secondary School Literature class and I have to say that this is very mind opening; the education system is so limited and conformed that we need different alternatives to help those who are not connecting with the traditional classroom.

Oh my God I am the student in contexts to this story I finished high school with 1.5 GPA and achieved the highest grade mark of A & B less than six times out of 63 class credits of four-year of high school. 7 years after graduating high school I attended college, got my bachelor and two masters degree along with 10 professional certifications in my field. High school was never relevant or relative to me in anyway. nowadays I give advice to kids in high school whenever I get the chance. I tell them they to seek understand so they could be understood. And the education system is the opposite of that.

ENGL 4338: In another class, I was reading about how many teachers refuse to believe that the way the curriculum works is flawed because it has worked for years but in this video, he really put it into perspective for me. He talks about how teachers should have more of a progressive set of values going into teaching so that they can assess what it is they can improve not only in their content but in their way of teaching as well.

ENGL 4338: seeing this ted talk, it made me really open my eyes and realize that educators really do have a great part in their student’s life. An educator’s persona will really reflect on their style of teaching and they should really be involving their students as much as they can to make their experience in school as best as they can.

ENGL 4338: Brian makes an excellent point when he points out that teacher have set their methods in a tradition old way, but it's important to make sure that teachers are changing and adapting to new and hopefully helpful teaching methods. He also shines light on the importance of offering more alternative activities or classes that can be beneficial for the students in the long run. Overall, Brian is a skilled speaker and I hope we can all be that change that he is asking for.

ENGL 4338 Dr. Bowles: I enjoyed this video because you can clearly see the passion this teacher has for wanting to help all students. Not every student is fortunate to be brought up in a household that values education, and for those students who aren't afforded that privilege, (and think school is a waste of time), finding an alternative way for them to want to learn is something I think many students would benefit from.

ENGL 4338: What an excellent presentation, everything he said was on point and really got me thinking. It is important that teachers take home cultures into consideration. Sometimes, no matter how intellectual a student can be, their values or expectations are not on school because that is what they have grown up to think. This is why teachers must be willing to help every single one of their students, especially the most vulnerable ones.

ENGL 4338: I thought it was admirable to see that Lozenski was able to distinguish the reason for James' resistance: the structure of his education and not specifically the content/teaching. I have never thought about how the structure of the education system could turn off students and think we should look into different methods such as ecological education.

ENGL 4338: I really liked how he talked about the Education system and involving self-identity and culture. I really liked that, because every student has different learning styles.

ENGL 4338: I 100% agree with Lozenski. It hits home for me because I, like his student James, had the same experience. I think he is very passionate about helping students because he understands what they go through and how tough it is to stay motivated at that age. He makes incredible points and it is obvious that every mind is an entirely different world. It is important that we understand that because not every child learns the same way/ is interested in the same things.

Maria Salmon-ENGL 4338: I completely resonate with several of the points brought up in this video. Back in high school and even prior to that, I struggled in some subjects and found myself feeling lost or as though school just wasn’t for me. Now that I’m older and am preparing to become an educator, it is much more clear to me how flawed the education system is and how it has failed many students, similar to James. As a future educator, I want to be part of the change that helps these students feel heard and included in the classroom. I want my future students to feel valid and know their education is valued.

This video was just a reminder that every student learns differently so there should be more than one technique with the traditional classroom model. Offering more alternatives is a great start for struggling students for them to be able to move forward.

ENGL 4338 (Brandy Saavedra) The way Lozenski touches on cultural context and self-identity usages in the classroom as a way for not only student motivation but of the student's transfer of knowledge is connected to some of the ideas of translingualism. I believe it is key to be aware of the similarities because once leaving the monolingustic ideology and entering one where the intergration of culture and identity gets involved, so do the students.

ENGL 4338, Spring 22: I agree wholeheartedly that the way our teaching system is currently operating does not match what it is promoted as. Adults tend to tell students that school is going to help them learn and acquire new knowledge that is going to better them for the rest of their lives, but as Lozenski says, school does not teach students to retain information. Personally, I cannot remember a majority of the content I "learned" in any math or science classes, and I have taken those courses since the age of ten. It is necessary that we update and alter our education system in order to make sure no more children fall victim to the academic achievement gap, the school to prison pipeline, etc. in the future.

As a child, I was similar to James in a way that I never felt like I was good enough in School and would always have my grades compared to others because of my low scores. It is important that teachers try their best to help each student so no one will feel left out when it comes to education because everyone is smart in their own way. This video is amazing because it demonstrates that there are so many alternatives when it comes to teaching in order to help every single student be successful.

  • @AdrienLegendre

The current mission statement is provide instruction, exams and grades. This means mission accomplished for a student who receives all failing grades. If the goal was acquiring knowledge then a student with a test grade of 60% would be congratulated and informed that the teacher and student will together to learn the remaining 40%, however, this never happens. This is a better mission statement: teach students to 1)love learning, 2)become indepedent, self-reliant learners with critical thinking skills, 3) acquire knowledge and skills. In cases like James, the best action is to take James out of the classroom, and encourage his independent learning skills.

ENGL 4338: The education system changes as the years go by. Everyone has different experiences where they come from. Many are fortunate and others not so much. Just because those situations vary doesn’t mean that every person isn’t capable of reaching their intellectual potential/development. Suppression and resistance of educators/the education system really affect students in their love for school. Being more open to various ways of instruction, participation, and helping students find their groove in school can make a big change.
