- We had a long layover between Maui and Nebraska…we decided to make a stop to see Trevor Bales of Bales Hay! Super nice guy, amazing operation. I hope you guys are enjoying this series of farm visits! I love filming these for you.

In these roaming farm tour videos Laura does a good job of explaining farming processes at a level general enough for us suburbanites to learn somewhat more about where our food (and some other agricultural products like cotton garments) come from. I now know what those funny-looking trucks with a big fork I saw in rural central California a few weeks ago were (hay squeeze)! From the earlier video on cotton in west Texas I know more about the cotton fields and more interestingly the gins I pass as I drive from our home in north central Texas to our kids' in New Mexico.

Excellent video. I follow Trevor on his channel and have been to his place. Really nice you could have some time there and you did a great job of explaining some things. I did catch that Trevor started talking about the engine baler and the reason why you can’t get them with motors any more. I know that Freeman that he mentioned is going to Kubota motors for their engine drives. If I remember right they only make about 40 or 50 New Holland bale wagons a year. Very nicely done!
That irrigation setup is very simple and unique. Probably very effective.
Wow, awesome to see that operation. We love AZ as well! We're quite familiar with the Mesa Gateway Airport. 🙂 Heading there again in March or April of next year, although we'll be driving this time.

I grew up in Iowa a the evening meal was always called supper. My kids (all older than you ) have somehow reverted to "lunch and dinner" people.
You and Grant can come visit us in AZ any time mid Oct thru late April.

Back in the 1980's we had a ranch in Utah, but our irrigation was open field, with furrows. We moved up from canvas dams to metal and some plastic. Neighbor put in sprinklers, as they used less water. Open field irrigation, you had a lot of run off, which usually went down to a nearby 'river' (what anyone else would call a creek, but Utah's the second driest state in the nation, after Nevada. Nevada probably calls a glass of water a pond. We grew oat hay, a lot of alfalfa, corn and wheat. Some clover to switch things up now and then. Ours all went to the 100 moo cows which were Galoways, a Scottish breed. Did great in the semi-arid desert. I didn't see the value of the place back when I was a kid, just how much work it took to keep it going. But looking back, it was the smartest way to live, really. Getting up every 2 hours to change the irrigation kinda dampened my enthusiasm, but being close to the land, does teach you a lot of valuable lessons. Thanks for sharing your journey. That honeymoon did ya'll a world of good!
I spent 2 years out there, being born and raised in MA. You're right on the money - the weather is AMAZING. Hard to beat it. Even 110° in July is tolerable (at least to me). Skies are blue 90% of the time. No snow, no road salt. Hard not to love a place like that! I always wondered what those fields were growing - now I know! Rode the motorcycle through that area many , many times. I miss it! Haven't been there in 20 years. Thanks for sharing, Laura and Grant, and Trevor - this was great!
What place are you talking about? What state has great weather besides Southern California?
@@getstuk87 AZ, TX, LA, MS, AL, FL, SC all have great weather, too.
@@SmittySmithsonite AZ is extremely hot. TX, LA, FL are brutally humid in summer. Trying to find somewhere to live that is similar to San Diego for example and unfortunately none of these are even comparable. Perhaps there is somewhere in AZ that's similar since they're so close?
@@getstuk87 AZ is only hot in the valley (Phoenix metro and Tuscon, and west of both). If you head towards Flagstaff at 5k feet, the weather is much like Massachusetts. Somewhere in between Phoenix and Flagstaff would be the same as San Diego I'd wager.
Laura, Great video. We get hay shipped to our area (central Md.)from out west for the horse people. I new it was irrigated but had no idea it was flooded through canals. Thanks for sharing 🙂
Bales! I’ve certainly been there a few times. I was born and raised in Arizona, mostly Phoenix but I also lived a good deal in Buckeye and Tonopah. This was pretty cool to see. Arizona’s summers suck though. I don’t miss those at all since moving to Kansas a few years ago. But I miss the winters.

We had an old bailer powered by with an onboard Wisconsin engine before moving on to a PTO powered one. It’s interesting how the designs for equipment sometimes goes in cycles just like the fashion industry. BTW- favorite green is Oliver green! Thank you for your videos.
We use to use those balers here but not many do anymore. I remember those days where we use to handle square bales by hand. We had our own trucks and loaders and use to hire out to load it on trucks and then put it in farmers and ranchers barns or large out door stacks. Hard hot job.

Grew up in Buckeye when it was only about nine or ten thousand people. When everyone knew everyone. Parents and grandparents lived there as well. I went to high school there when 150 graduates was the biggest class at that time. I knew Steve Bales in high school, nice guy. The gables also in Arlington. Still go to Buckeye to visit friends and relatives.

The haymaker ranch is in OKC city owned by the Wells Fargo actor Jim Hardy. Dale Robertson decessed of course. Who loved and raised and trained horses.
This one brings back memories from a very long time ago. My grandfather raised Hereford cattle breeding stock and Holsteins for dairy. I felt like big deal when he asked me to ride the bale wagon behind the baler. I was 8 years old.
I knew within 15 seconds you weren't in Nebraska. They wet cut in the humid areas and no baling. As a child I found the bale wagon was the most amazing thing to watch operate so many levers and rods to organize the hay as it was loaded on. I highly recommend watching a video of one working. They are a dying breed. I didn't know any large farms still ran small bales.

We used to use self-propelled Massy Harris bailers back in the 1970s. It's just a bailer with a engine.
I grew up doing produce farming in the mid to late 80s and worked for the guy who brought stink bugs here from Asia to combat the tent worm issue. I quit when he refused to allow me to give away 50 bushels of produce that he was too lazy to sell, and insisted I dump it on a giant pile to rot.
I have been watching your channel for a couple months. It is a good representation of the American Farmer and the differences of regions. Are you planning to be at World Ag Expo in Tulare, CA?? If you have plans to come to Wisconsin, I would gladly point you towards some farms you could tour.

the s/p bale stacker (yellow & red, tiny little cab up front) DOES stack bales - and it can move them down the road at upwards of 40 mph if need be... they're a bit top-heavy (early models were built on 5-ton truck chassis), but they did the job...
It's amazing how long NH has built essentially the same machine. Don't see those a ton here on the east coast but seem to be a mainstay out west, kinda like stroke counters on balers.

I love your channel as well as New York Farm Girls! Why doesn’t Grant want to bale hay? I used to do it and it was kind of fun when you didn’t have to pick up the bales and stack them by hand like we used to.The biggest problem with making hay in Western New York, where I’m from, is getting enough dry weather to make hay.
