I thought that movie was pretty mediocre. They did absolutely nothing with the Civil War aspect of the film. It could've been about any factual or fictional war and photographers in that situation. The fact that it was a modern American Civil War had almost no relevance to the story. Not bad for a movie about war time photographers but as a modern American Civil War movie it didn't say much of anything. Huge miss in my opinion.

I’ve been photographing protests & rallies for ten years now, including being in DC on the street for Trump’s Inauguration in 2017, and to what Nick was saying, the night of Jan 19th i vividly remember laying in bed having the most real inner conversation with myself to date about what to do in various scenarios of possible violence. The one thought that sticks out the most, almost as a mantra was “if you see a flash and feel heat, immediately toss the camera to try and get the images out safe at least” And later that day I actually encountered a scene of a massive fire that had erupted amidst protestors and my brain literally shut off and went into autopilot. I gave my friends one look and went running off without a word directly towards the fire, a limo i think it was, where i encountered a mass of protestors and a wall of stormtroo…i mean riot cops. Still on autopilot i just dove right into the no mans land between em and start clicking my shutter as quickly as i could, ultimately getting some of the most shots of my career. But yeah, we do have to have those moments of self-reflection as to just what our art and documentation of history is worth for us.
I remember that incident. The limo owner was a Pakistani immigrant, I believe, who lost about $100k due to the rioters burning his limo and his driver was inside when they set it on fire. Scary stuff. I probably saw your photos.
Thank you guys for speaking what you believe, and in spite of disagreeing with Trump and his policies, saying that shooting someone is completely wrong and off limits. I think things have always been this way on the surface, more or less. Bad things happen and have always happened. But I think there are two factors that make it worse today than it was before. To Tim's point, so much information is thrust upon us regularly and from every direction so we react. Not all of that information is correct (some of it is malicious and some of it is just people who don't know any better and it's only getting harder and harder to determine what is and isn't real at face value) but we still react, so now we have to backtrack through misinformation to get to the truth and it makes entire situations worse because now there are people getting conflicting information and reacting to that all at different stages all of the time. Nobody is on the same page anymore and people don't care enough to inform themselves better. To go beyond that, you have (like Andy said) a certain type of person in this country who has been emboldened by Trump's rhetoric as a politician to be outwardly hateful or shitty to other people. I don't even think his presidency was anywhere near as bad as it could have been BUT his approach to being a political figure has fundamentally changed how United States citizens and their elected officials treat and interact with each other in the most negative way possible. It's basically become a tactical playbook for anyone trying to garner support by tapping into a well of opinionated and sometimes hateful people who feel underrepresented because of their beliefs. Facts don't matter, emotional reactions to things do. Ill-informed people treating each other people like absolute garbage is a recipe for disaster. An assassination attempt in 2024 is fucking embarrassing for our country. We're tearing ourselves apart at the seams.

Wish people weren’t so divided and hateful towards each other. For example I’ve become a fan of Kinda Funny and all the personalities and love the content and I myself lean more to the right on the political spectrum. Doesn’t mean I stop interacting with their content as I simply just respect and see their point of view and I just see things differently. Instead of doing a "notify" for the Porty book, why not setup some sort of system where people basically pre-order it? They don't get charged upfront but they need a credit card on file, and then you make copies of the book for exactly how many pre-orders you receive. That way people have to commit more than just an email sign-up, and if some people cancel, you'll likely be able to find replacement buyers for those cancellations once you receive the books.

But it’s like a child who sees the world in black in white with very little discernment. We agree on our values. But how he comprehends the world around him like Trump and conservatives is very childlike.

Trump presided over the largest quarter (Q2 - 2020) and year of government spending in US History. Obviously that was during the pandemic so that is fairly understandable. But if you think federal printing of money is the true cause of inflation, the pandemic (and by extension Trump's response, which was continued by Biden) is the cause. Keeping the country and the world from completely shutting down was the priority and there were going to be hangover effects of that. But look even before that: During Donald Trump's first three years in office, Federal spending went up by around 800 Billion dollars per quarter, the most during any 3 year stretch of any president's term before him, including the first 3 years of Obama when we were recovering from a recession. The idea that Donald Trump ever cut spending is a myth. Federal spending went up every single quarter during that time, all while he cut taxes. While some of those cuts were for the middle class, a larger share of that cut went to the top 1% of earners. He also levied corporate tax cuts, that he claimed would raise household incomes by $4000 dollars in the first year. It went up by less than a fourth of that, and his trickle down tax cuts never trickled down. I am not a big fan of Joe Biden as a president, but the current Fed policies have slowed inflation pretty substantially and the massive recession that was predicted a few years ago has been staved off. I also think people put far more weight in the amount of influence the president has over the economy. It's a complex system with countless factors, and the president only controls a few levers. The true problem is the CORPORATE CONSOLIDATION of America's economy, and the ways it has helped wealthy people add more wealth, faster than ever. Every facet of the American economy has grown substantially over the last 25 years, except for wages. GDP has more than doubled, cost of housing has more than doubled, the number of billionaires has more than doubled.... all while median household income has increased by only 10%. The wealthy have been winning out for decades, regardless of the president (there have been 5 since then). Until you vote for someone who is going to actually go after them and make real economic overhauls (not more tax cuts for the rich and the corporations), that isn't going to change. I understand that economic times are hard and empathize with wanting to vote to make it better. But casting Donald Trump as the savior of middle class economics is a dramatic misinterpretation of reality. Do not overlook his faults on the lie that he has some kind of genius economic policies. He has been a cartoonish symbol of wealth and opulence for decades and he doesn't care about you or your family's bank account. I appreciate the respect in your comment and hope for nothing but the best for you and yours.

Instead of doing a "notify" for the Porty book, why not setup some sort of system where people basically pre-order it? They don't get charged upfront but they need a credit card on file, and then you make copies of the book for exactly how many pre-orders you receive. That way people have to commit more than just an email sign-up, and if some people cancel, you'll likely be able to find replacement buyers for those cancellations once you receive the books.

I love Andy but he’s not intelligent enough to have the conversations he’s trying to have. And I respect him because his hearts in the right place. But it’s like a child who sees the world in black in white with very little discernment. We agree on our values. But how he comprehends the world around him like Trump and conservatives is very childlike.
It’s very true. I totally get being all heart and having so much compassion that you loose sight of things. I’ve been there. But you can’t look at politics and certain issues so black and white. @@JaredHayes541 I think you are a bit misguided about the economics of Donald Trump's first presidency. Trump presided over the largest quarter (Q2 - 2020) and year of government spending in US History. Obviously that was during the pandemic so that is fairly understandable. But if you think federal printing of money is the true cause of inflation, the pandemic (and by extension Trump's response, which was continued by Biden) is the cause. Keeping the country and the world from completely shutting down was the priority and there were going to be hangover effects of that.
But look even before that:
During Donald Trump's first three years in office, Federal spending went up by around 800 Billion dollars per quarter, the most during any 3 year stretch of any president's term before him, including the first 3 years of Obama when we were recovering from a recession. The idea that Donald Trump ever cut spending is a myth. Federal spending went up every single quarter during that time, all while he cut taxes. While some of those cuts were for the middle class, a larger share of that cut went to the top 1% of earners. He also levied corporate tax cuts, that he claimed would raise household incomes by $4000 dollars in the first year. It went up by less than a fourth of that, and his trickle down tax cuts never trickled down.
I am not a big fan of Joe Biden as a president, but the current Fed policies have slowed inflation pretty substantially and the massive recession that was predicted a few years ago has been staved off. I also think people put far more weight in the amount of influence the president has over the economy. It's a complex system with countless factors, and the president only controls a few levers.
The true problem is the CORPORATE CONSOLIDATION of America's economy, and the ways it has helped wealthy people add more wealth, faster than ever. Every facet of the American economy has grown substantially over the last 25 years, except for wages. GDP has more than doubled, cost of housing has more than doubled, the number of billionaires has more than doubled.... all while median household income has increased by only 10%. The wealthy have been winning out for decades, regardless of the president (there have been 5 since then). Until you vote for someone who is going to actually go after them and make real economic overhauls (not more tax cuts for the rich and the corporations), that isn't going to change.
I understand that economic times are hard and empathize with wanting to vote to make it better. But casting Donald Trump as the savior of middle class economics is a dramatic misinterpretation of reality. Do not overlook his faults on the lie that he has some kind of genius economic policies. He has been a cartoonish symbol of wealth and opulence for decades and he doesn't care about you or your family's bank account. I appreciate the respect in your comment and hope for nothing but the best for you and yours.
