*LYRICS - Hey, Grandpa (Katie original)*
    ------------
Hey, grandpa, I wish you were here today
I'm on my way to play another show
I bet you'd love it, folks are sittin' on some hay
So I'll pull out my fiddle an' I'll rosin* up my bow
What I'd give to see you sittin' in the front row
Hey, grandpa, there's this boy I like a lot
He loves fishin', workin' hard and Barney Fife*
I wish you could be here to see me walkin' down the aisle
Can you believe I'm gonna be somebody's wife?
Well, it don't matter, but in case you'd like to know
I saved a spot for you by grandma in the front row
Now I know you're somewhere better
And this is how it's gotta be
And you wouldn't want us cryin' anyway
But I'm always gonna carry a part of you in me
Oh, I sure am missing you today
Hey, grandpa, what's it like where you are now?
Is it everything we dreamed it oughta be?
I wish I could see you, without the pain that took you down
Free to run, and free to laugh, and free to breathe
Well, I'll admit some days I just can't wait to go
I can't help but there's a longing in my soul
Oh, deep inside somehow I think I know
When it's my turn, you'll be there waitin' in the front row
Now I know you're somewhere better
And this is how it's gotta be
The ones we love, we never really lose
So I'm always gonna carry a part of you in me
But today I've gotta say, I'm missing you
Hey, grandpa, I wish you were here today
I'm on my way to play another show
    * Rosin - resin that helps the bow grip the strings
    * Barney Fife - a character from the Andy Griffith Show they grew up watching
    Album: Live Sessions, vol. 04

Interesting timing. A young man who grew up with my son was accepted this fall into the Master's Degree in Conducting at a major Central Texas University. I told him "the day you're conducting a concert we'll be there". Last night was that night and his parents just couldn't make it due to work but my wife and I made the 4 hour round trip and got in the front row and made sure he saw us when he took the stage. It was also that orchestras first time in front of a live audience since COVID. Both he and the Orchestra were so appreciative of people showing up and the concert was incredible. I guess my point is don't miss those opportunities to just be there. Great great song!

There are two aspects of a song that captures the heart and soul of the listener. First is the connection of the poetic artistry expressing and exposing the relationship with marvelous depth and meaning. This song sincerely captures the essence and depth of your relationship to your beloved grandpa in a sweet and powerful way. Second is the relatability of the song to the essence of others to connect with the words and music. As a grandpa it is my hope and prayer that my two grandkids would feel the same way about me. We love our grandkids so much.
My father had a wonderful relationship with his granddaughter (my niece), she was saddened by his absence at her wedding, knowing that he would have loved to see her get married and meet her wonderful husband. My father died of pancreatic cancer a few years before she met her man and was married. While someday I hope to attend the weddings of my grandchildren (decades from now?). Nothing is guaranteed. So I hope God allows me to continue building the deep, meaningful kind of relationship you all had with your grandpa with my grandkids.
This song is a WONDERFUL work, Katie. A powerful, touching song with deep meaning and value to a soul like mine. Keep writing. Keep sharing your heart. Keep your faith. God bless you!

That was such a beautiful song, Katie. From reading some of the comments, it's obviously a song that most of us can relate to. My grandparents have been gone for several years now. I have a lot of fond memories of time spent with them, and yes, they are still missed. This last spring was really hard for me because I lost both of my parents to cancer within a month of each other. This song made me think of them also and how much I miss them. Even though I miss them terribly, I'm glad they aren't hurting anymore and have gone on to be with Christ. I'm also glad that as Christians, we have that hope of seeing our loved ones again. On the 23rd of this month it will be 40 years since I lost my elder sister and, though it gets easier, I was thinkin' just today how it never really gets easy. Thanks guys for reminding me that I'm gonna see her again because she believed in our Lord Jesus Christ.

What a great song. Katie thank you for written for it. Thank you all for playing it. As a Grandpa I pray I will be able to have a positive impact on my two grandkids. Music isn’t my thing, but I have taught them how to fish and we love going as much as we can. Also want you to know my wife, and two others just saw your show in Branson last Tuesday. It was awesome! We saw a total of three shows this week. Your’s was the best! Please keep writing your own music. We love it! God Bless you all for making the world a better place.

So, so sweet! Thanks for writing and sharing Katie! Grandparents can be some of the most influential people in a child's life. Mine taught me how to fish, clean 'em and cook 'em over a campfire, how to camp and build a campfire, how to shoot, and how to love nature. It was later that I learned what it was to love The Lord, but that set the stage.

Hi Frank. Some time ago we were talking about the fact that there were still missing videos shot at the grandparents' farm in Mountain Grove, now we have the confirmation. By the Way. Katie's song is stunningly beautiful!

@@Roberto-pd8vn Yes, you were right and now I know that there is at least one more video recorded there. It seems quite an achievement to me that they recorded at least three videos that day since Ellen said that Julianne had been struggling with the heat. "Hey, Grandpa" is an amazing, touching song by Katie which really shows her skills as a songwriter and a singer. It deserves to be played on all the major radio stations imho.

@@FrankvdMuijsenberg Yes, I read an answer from Ellen, in their fifth concert video, which said just that. Unfortunately, the record companies today sponsor more and more not talented artists and bad taste musical genres. True quality is not rewarded. And here in Italy it is even much worse. However, what matters is to be able to continue listening to their wonderful music. Have a good night Frank (since we have the same time zone).

I read eons ago that the sense of hearing is the last to go.
So I'm praying that Katie's melody is one of those that will usher me. (Hopefully the song Finally Going Home)
