  • @EhurtAfy

Anecdote. I drink 2-3 liters of water daily, but also at least 40oz of diet soda. Diet soda tastes better than regular to me and I would be consuming an extra 400-800 calories daily without it. Diet soda feels like cheating and doesn't lead to additional cravings for me

This is exactly what I do, 2 to 3 liters of mineral water, and some 300ml of diet soda IF I have some craving, which usually I don't feel because I eat 1 piece of fruit per day, not super big, but medium size fruit. I'm also on a calorie deficit via restricting calories IN, no issues so far.

Since I suffer from "parosmia" - distorted sense of smell- I became sensitive to the smell chlorine. Even with the smallest ppms in drinking water, it smells like bleach to me. SO I had to counter the smell with low/zero calorie squash (I don't know what it would be called in the US) which is very concentrated juice and I add it to the water. This overpowers the smell of chlorine and I'm able to drink water. I get a lot of heat from these zealots. I didn't put an ounce of weight and my teeth have zero decay or even a filling and I'm pushing 40.
Some people think diet has to be a punishment and no joy in it. No wonder a lot of people fail.

For the most part I'm fine with water. I drink about 3 liters a day. But I somehow created the habbit of getting myself a small bottle of an artificially sweetened drink when going to the supermarket. The downside of this is that not all smaller supermarkets have them, so when I go there I am tempted to get something that is sugar sweetened because I am used to having my sweet drink.

Despite trying to drink as much water as possible and particularly when exercising, otherwise I prefer PepsiMax and have been drinking lots of it for many years. Since also cutting most sugar from my diet I bake and cook with artificial sweetners and also use them in coffee to reduce calories but still satisfy my sweet tooth. Sometimes I stupidly feel guilty about it but then I remember that in the last 4 years I've lost 40kgs of fat (and keept it off), added 10kg of muscle, quit smoking/alcohol, totally overhauled my diet, drastically improved both my mental and physical health and become the happiest I've been in literally decades. In the greater scheme of things zero calorie soft drinks and artificial sweetners being my only real 'vice' is actually a very positive sign that life is really good, so thanks for the reminder Layne as well as for another thought-provoking video based on science.

I had to buy one at a gas station and when I double checked the sugar back in the car it was such a crazy amount. It was the equivalent of 11 teaspoons of sugar.

I've never been into sugarsweetened beverages, so never had a problem for the need to replace them. I mainly drink different types of tea. One type that has some natural sweetness is liquorice tea. The molecule that makes it taste sweet tastes 40x sweeter than sugar, so you don't need much and drinking it as a tea has close to zero calories.
My physiotherapist had the problem of craving for sweet drinks and would have at least a big bottle of coke a day. He wanted to stop but always failed. Once I told him about liquorice, he was able to make the switch, and by the looks, I guess he lost a couple of lbs since.
So for people who are afraid of "artificial sweeteners", check out liquorice, it's completely natural, looks like wood and can be boiled with hot water. You can drink it hot or let it cool down. It's very refreshing, very smooth on the throat (nice when you've got a scratchy throat), and gives more of the sensation to kill the thirst than plain water.

I mean I understand you read studies and can find out of a study is bad, but I'm sure good scientists can also be corrupt and make a study so that it looks good, but still it has results favoring the industry who ordered it. And than a meta analysis would also be influenced by such studies. Iwatched a lot of videos from you and I like them a lot, and i don't have issues againt artificial sweetners. Seconded. Taste buds shouldn't have that much control over our choices that it's stressful to eat or drink something simple, as some people find (unfortunately we're surrounded by an instant gratification- and abundance-oriented environment nowadays, which does put us out of touch with our natural instincts and almost creates a "live to eat" vs "eat to live" paradigm for some, where food has more control over them than they over it).

Love Layne and Carbon changed my life for the better but this one? What did they eat? All of those labs mean zip and might have absolutely nothing to do with beverages whatsoever. He did state the group switching to water may have sought out sweet foods to replace them. Soooo again unless everyone was eating the same thing every single level of those labs may have nothing to do with beverages. I guess maybe to try and detect behavior while switching between the three options and debunk people that think all you need to do is focus on drinking the right beverages and not pay attention to any other variable of their diet? I don’t know, I’m a moron and probably missed something but seems like that analysis, meaning the people that made the analysis (not Layne), just needed something to do to kill time. I just don’t get why the markers mean anything if the rest of their diet during all the studies wasn’t controlled. Like I said though I may be just an idiot and it went over my head.
