I am an adult with spd/asd & aside from auditory sensitivity, interoceptive sensitivity bothers me more than any other sensory issue. The sensation of food moving through my digestive tract is extremely uncomfortable (no matter what I eat) & I honestly believe most of the chronic digestive issues experienced by individuals on the spectrum are related to interoception.
YES 🙌 ! Hi! Me too! It was subtle when I was a kid. Stomach aches. Constipation. Nausea. Sensitive palate. But gallbladder disease at 17 & removal. Done. Fibromyalgia. IBS. Acid Reflux. Undiagnosed SPD. Eating is pure torture. And I can feel it moving through my system. I’m currently having issues. Abdominal Bloating with sunlight. No joke.
What a precious video with so many crucial information
My son is 20, and has autism. I've always suspected he had sensory issues when in came to his internal functioning, but I'm relieved it finally has a name! He just doesn't seem to be aware that he's full, until it's to late, and he's even vomited. I try to keep a close watch on how much he eats, but I want him to be more self aware. He also needs to go into a quiet environment where there are no distractions to discover he needs to use the bathroom. If someone reminds him when he's at school, he will go, but generally there are no places in a school environment or in a future job environment that would be free from distractions. I do have an IEP coming up, are there goals to help him with self awareness?
