      JoeOf91 it's honestly true. Pizza? Tastes great, awful for you. Fruit? Tastes pretty good, but even it is packed full of sugar and too much of the more sugary fruits like grapes or apples is bad for you. Vegetables? Taste awful and they're great for you. It pretty much evens out across the board - there are few good tasting foods that don't have substantial drawbacks for your physical health.

      Russell Westbrook it's about proportions. White bread is empty carbs. Fruits have sugar but along with that sugar you get nutrition. Donuts is still sugar and fat but no nutrition. So your daily sugar intake is filled up by the unhealthy foods and the rest of the daily needs aren't filled, so to fill those up you'll get the extra sugar as well

Unless you smother them in butter, salt, pepper, or do other things to alter the taste, they don't taste good. I stood in the shower and just turned the water on and the moment it hit me my breath actually got knocked out and I started hyperventillating. Had to turn that hot water on pretty quick. I can only take a cold water shower after slowly easing into it from hot water.

      Seriously though, ‘it squeezes all the lactic acid out’ is a pretty gross misunderstanding of how the human body works. Lactic acid build up is largely intracellular, and blood vessels have little control in how much can be transported because it has to be transported across a membrane via proteins. You can’t just squeeze it out through the sheer force of vasoconstriction lol. Don’t get me wrong, the general idea that cold has therapeutic benefits is surely correct, but his ‘science’ behind it is questionable. By the way, fun fact - and I’ll leave a link to this below, when I was studying biomedical sciences this one professor was absolutely adamant about it - we’re not actually sure that lactic acid is a cause of or just a by-product of muscle fatigue, or whether it even has anything to do with it. It’s one of those things that got picked up and perpetuated by the media based on preliminary findings (I think it was something to do with findings like lactic acid building up everywhere except heart muscle, which naturally doesn’t fatigue, ergo, lactic acid must cause fatigue etc), but most biomedical scientists aren’t completely convinced. The evidence was pretty poor and there’s lots to the contrary nowadays. It’s a good indicator of fatigue in sports science, but that’s not to say it’s responsible for it. And in 20 years time when it gets debunked in the public eye once for all, no doubt everyone will be saying ‘scientists got it wrong!’ when in reality most of those in the field haven’t believed this for decades now.

      I hiked in the Andes mountains near Lima Peru and our native guide didn't think I could handle getting into the mountain stream. We were about 13K feet and I went in and swam a while. He took pictures to show his friends because they wouldn't believe him if he told them that a white person from the North was swimming in their river like they do. It was definitely cold and didn't bother me at the time but I did it later in the afternoon before bed and couldn't get warm the rest of the nite while sleeping in the tent. I should try doing the shower thing and see how it goes.

  • @cmdctrl4292
    @cmdctrl4292 Před 7 lety +810

    I started doing this a month ago and my results are:
    1. I look younger in the face, bags under the eyes = gone.
    2. Less acne, I think it's because a hot shower opens pores, soap cleans them, cold water closes them so you're not sweating after a shower thus leaving you cleaner.
    3. Muscle recovery is faster.
    4. More and stronger erections ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    5. I actually feel better after a shower, like he said, it wakes you up where as a hot shower relaxes you.
    So I take hot showers and at the end, turn it down a little bit, let my body adjust (30 seconds), then turn it down a little bit more, then once I hit ice cold, I try to rough it for 3 minutes but it's difficult. I focus on back, arms, face (not hair), and chest. Once I get out, I open the bathroom door so that I dont open my pores up again. Back-acne = almost fully gone. It's amazing...

    • @SpaceHawk13
      @SpaceHawk13 Před 7 lety +22

      This sounds like a good idea. Mind if I ask, how does opening the door stop pores opening up, and how many times a week would you shower?

    • @cmdctrl4292
      @cmdctrl4292 Před 7 lety +46

      Opening the door lets the steam out. You want to end on cold, then turn off the shower, open the door, and get out of the bathroom as soon as possible because it's hot and steamed up. If you body gets warm again, then your pores open back up and you start to sweat.
      I shower 1-2 times a day.

    • @SpaceHawk13
      @SpaceHawk13 Před 7 lety +11

      Thank you, that makes sense. I was sort of thinking after 3 minutes of cold water at the end that most of the steam would of cleared out, but I guess the bathroom would still be steamy. Am definitely going to try this, will just have to work up the courage.
      Also think heard that because some places put chlorine in the water having hot showers can be a bit more unhealthy because when it turns into steam we start inhaling the chlorine and maybe other stuff.

    • @cmdctrl4292
      @cmdctrl4292 Před 7 lety +40

      Don't just go from hot to cold, slowly back it down to cold, and when it gets super cold, focus on your breathing and just relax; your body will immediately want to go into shock but don't let it, just soak it in and plan your next move mentally like, "okay now I'm going to water my arms, then my back, then my chest, etc.". Getting acne off my face, back, arms, and chest has been priceless. I wish I knew this shit when I was a teenager...
      Oh wow I didn't know that about chlorine. I just goggled it and yeah, my state puts chlorine in the water so that's good to know. I'm definitely going to look up inhaling chlorine though, thanks for that.

    How to manage cold showers better (this is what made it easier for me):
    1. Shower normally, but start the shower with as hot water as you can MANAGE to warm up your body (in my case this is important, make sure you cover all the areas, especially your lower back as that place will often get warm last)
    2. Lastly, rinse off your body with as cold water as you can manage, and usually for 1-2 minutes because that is the time required for your body to adapt to not feel the stinging of the cold.
    How cold? Cold enough that when you put the showerhead over your head you will instinctively take a deep breath. Even if you're a beginner you need to feel a slight shock when you do it. This is because when exposed to voluntary stress, your body starts to hyperactivate and you will become a superhuman for a short while (if you're like me and often have a stuffed nose this will clear it, like no joke).
    *Don't curl up and wish it to be over! This is the time to face the cold, take big breaths and let your body do what it is capable of doing.*
    The warm water at the start will help you by preparing your body & brain for the temperature difference.

      David Spin is correct; the water in some parts of the south during the summer will not be cold. It depends on what part of the water system you're connected to. In some parts of the town I live in, the water never gets cold during the summer, certainly not cold enough for a SEAL shower.

      Same with eating healthy and exercise I'd you're not used to it. You gotta adapt yourself to discomfort if you want to be better, because most of the things that make you better are uncomfortable.

      They did it as torture and recently found out it theoretically can have health benefits so they are retroactively making the claim this is done for the health of their personnel.

    Ok I see a lot of people here who don't understand what he said or how it works.
    The number one thing he mentions is keeping the lactic acid out and vasoconstriction. He explanation is simplistic but I will add to this.
    When the cold water hits your body, your body and mind goes in a state of shock.
    1. Your body will shake as part of fight or flight response. That trembling typically will activate all the muscle in your body to wake (heat) them up or prepare them.
    A. Blood circulation improves along with increased heart beat.
    B. Mood improves,
    C. Clarity of mind ensue.
    D. Decrease inflammation and swelling (lactic acid being squeezed of muscle)
    E. Increased metabolism
    F. Increased levels of dopamine (feel good hormone) and norepinephrine (adrenaline)
    G. Pain releaving effect
    H. Lowers cortisol (stress) levels.
    I. Calm itchy skin
    J. Helps with weight loss (brown fat burns with heat and the shriveling from cold water heating up the body)
    K. Glowing hair and skin
    This is basically the gist. I have experienced all of the above except for itchy skin which I don't have.

      THANKS for corroborating what I've heard about this fix elsewhere. After your warm shower how long do you shower in cold water to get ALL of these benefits? Is it safe for a 60 year old guy with a good diet and who works out for 45 minutes every other day?

      @Heinz Britsz My father died at 90 in 2018, and he wanted to die ever since my mother did in 2007. No exercise since then, always hated doctors, lost all of his teeth due to utter neglect. I've been the total opposite for decades. So old age tends to run in the family by default. Good luck to you.
