Well this was incredibly fun to work on indeed after watching the two recreations made by Hypo. There had to be way to top it, and give more backstory for Shadow Fall.
Lets take a journey back to 1998, a time when one of the most beloved Sonic games was released on the Sega Dreamcast in 3D for the first time. It was met with great praise from critics and fans alike and gained a legendary status in the franchise. However it had aged poorly graphically throughout the years. I wanted to do something the fans have been asking to see an HD version that was done with new 3D graphics and VFX; something that was not technologically available at the time of its original release. Everything you see here was all scene built, animated, and hand lit by me, it was my first solo recreation alone .
[DEVELOPMENT]
In developing this short little film recreating the first three cutscenes in Sonic's story, I wanted to do a combination of both old and new when it came down to visuals and sounds to get the scenes to near perfection. I gained a lot of inspiration from Hypo and took up learning blocking methods and puppeteering to get the same kind of quality. It had to be both familiar and refreshing at the same time which really pushed some limits both for me and my composer. With that, meant having to clean the sound up for HQ format (and getting rid of some for realism), keeping a lot of the same frames but with adjusted cinematography and creating new shots, creating new Foley, and scoring new original music while mixing classic with modern. IT IS NOT PERFECT, as I did run into some issues animating in Source which are present such as several lights refusing to rotate on a locked axis so they look multicolored and Chaos not having a bone hierarchy for a proper rig, so I had to get creative. Creating a lot of the custom models was very difficult in Blender, but it was all worth it in the end. Please enjoy the short film!
LOOK HERE:
-I understand that I used Craig's voices for Foley and Ryan's for the actual dialogue. I didn't have time to go file searching over 400 lines or get together a cast.
-Everything was a scene build
-Many animations were blocked and keyed by looking at gameplay footage(I'm so happy on how it turned out!)
-I realize that Chaos has a brain, but unfortunately due to technical limitations, I had to either choose to show it and risk the model looking too invisible/abstract or make Chaos look like moving water similar to his generation look. Although I think I might do a little trial and error for the next one ;)
-I will NOT release any of the assets used here (it would't be special if everyone used it).

You actually presented everything in such a way that it looked really natural and vibrant. Even the voice-acting of the original cast fits better in this animation, than it does in the original game. That's impressive!

Simply amazing! It makes me want to see a remastered versions of the Adventure games!
The only problem I have is that you could hear Roger Craig Smith's grunts in some places, besides that, I love it!
You should totally do more of these remade cutscenes, if you have the time!

ThatCubeGamer don't we already have enough remasters? Sonic1,Sonic2 other genisis games. In total there were 4 or 5 ports for sonic adventure. Same goes for sonic adventure 2 that's enough games

Most of these recreations just use already existing maps for the Source Engine, because making maps is hard, but I really like how you went so far as to recreate Station Square itself. It's a nice touch, and really adds to the quality of this recreation.
Even the most beautiful animation can't make this dialogue any less 2000.
I love how expressive you've made Sonic. He showed more emotion in this game than his last three main series games.

Loved every second! The cinematic shots, the enhanced soundtrack, the more intimidating SS police, Chaos and Eggman looking more menacing overall (man I miss Deem Bristow...) SA1 has been in DIRE need of a facelift!

Excellent work! This looks great! Makes me wish that Sonic Adventure would get a remake. You did a very job here! Nice work on making Sonic expressive here. I love it. One criticism I would have to make though is the use of voice clips. It's best not to use a mixture of different voice clips since Ryan and Roger have completely different voices for Sonic which made this a bit jarring. It's best to just keep it consistent and add Sonic's grunts from SA2 since it had the same voice in SA1.
The one in SA2 is the same guy but the voice still sounds different too.
+David Claxton Ryan's voice might be a bit higher pitched in SA2 but his SA2 voice grunts are still very similar and minor enough to utilise here so they can still be used when doing something like this again in the future. It just makes more sense to stick to one voice altogether when it comes to stuff like this.

Gotta say, I really appreciate the effort that went into this, from the HD remade version of Station Square, to the details like people falling over when Sonic runs by.
This looks amazing! I wish they'd remake SA1 and 2 and then follow it up with a 3rd title to complete the trilogy. It wouldn't need much of a story, it could just be The Return of Chaos.
Good stuff! Though, I wish the humans looked less- creepy. Human designs change rapidly throughout the Sonic series, but they were more anime-styled in SA1 (something many reviewers forget to mention) However, given SFM’s exporting of public-use models and how nobody made hi-def human models for SA1, I doubted that much could be done to fix that anyway.

Something you would see in the movie theaters. Beautiful.
Really nicely made. some bits of criticism here:
-Sonic's voice clips are a bit inconsistent. You'd use Ryan Drummond's lines from the cut scene but later use Roger Craig Smith grunts. Rather jarring considering both actors have a different pitch.
-You seem to be using several generations animations. Some of them are really well incorporated into the scene, however don't make a habit of overusing them in future animations as it'll become quite apparent. But do feel free to use the basic walking,running,jogging,spinning ones as much as you'd like for action sequences.
-Cinematography needs a little bit more work. I found Chaos introduction into the frame a bit abrupt. Maybe you could've built it up a little bit more. Try looking at films and experimenting with more dynamic camera angles. Personally I feel chaos could've been a bit out of frame to later reveal his full appearance when sonic came in, to create a small sense of mystery. However you seemed to have the right idea here to establish a mood so that's a great plus.
-Some of the acting for the characters felt a bit off. Eggman's evil laugh for example has him motioning his arms in circles. I found it a bit awkward looking at it again. Look up the sonic unleashed CG intro and take note how eggman cackles in laughter, the way he exaggerates and wails his arms and torso with power. It's actually a psychological fact that men who feel empowered often like to occupy a lot of space around them. Which is why you see people like your boss for example having big desks in their offices with lots of space. They'll even put their legs on on them to get a better sense of superiority. Eggman does this a lot with his mannerisms and machinery.
Why thank you so much for your constructive criticism! Honestly the only animated part I reused was Sonic's ball roll. Everything else was blocked key framed which I needed to learn and I had to literally had to watch and mirror gameplay footage animation (the process was like scrapping a cheese grater against my head to get it right). Some were better than others due to time constraints. But this was just the introduction to get people familiar with their old game, I am looking forward to trying new methods in cinematography, sound, and animation :)

The quality of the animation almost makes it look like a movie.
If it weren't for the split in Sonic's eyes, I wouldn't even be able to tell that it was made in SFM.
4:00 well...that's an improvement for sure.
Literally the only real problem (and only because all of SA1's music is dear to me.. So bias) is that the original version of it doesnt matter didnt get played when sonic came in. Besides that, this whole recreation was extremely pleasing. Sure, a few details here and there (the bullets falling out of Chaos being absent, maybe building up the villainous entry a bit more, minor stuff), but you really did a hellaciously good job on this. Thankya!

I compared this with the latest Sonic Forces game cutscene and that doesn't even come close to the fluidity of this.
Also despite the fact that you used Modern Sonic's design, you managed to make him not look like a complete fool, something Sega does now since around Sonic Colors.
Rest easy knowing now that you are better than a team of professionals.
This is actually really neat, only complaint is Chaos' model. But assuming you might've made it from scratch, it's still impressive.

@@SheathEntertainment I know, it's weird. Not only do live action adaptations of... well, anything really, seem to do really poorly in the box office and it, ironically kind of breaks the immersion of whatever is trying to be recreated. Well actually, I that depends on what series that is, but it makes that world and mainly the characters in that world can look really out of place compared to all the human characters in the cast. And.... as far as Sonic's model from what we've seen so far...

this is so perfect the attention to details the Easter eggs the fact that you make the SSPD look less like unorganized fools.
The 2 only nitpicks I could find are that the Chaos model lakes the brain in his head and that the really cool scene in with the bullets effect less fall out of chaos is missing but beside this is this just Perfect.
I'd honestly watch every ep if you did the whole story of Sonic Adventure in this cinematic format. You got my sub, boi.
