After serving a number of years as a squire, an earnest young commoner poses as a knight and establishes himself in the jousting tournaments of Europe. He and a princess fall in love, but she is unaware of his deceit and common roots. The false knight is estranged from the princess once his true roots are revealed. He struggles to amend their relationship.

@@Aethgeir i believe they HAD to have heavier armor for jousting, to prevent being dismounted during the exchange.
@@1CrypticNCJousting armor would be more reinforced, with parts of the suit immobile and with less vision etc, but you would still be able to mount a horse just fine. They didnt just slap a slab of thick steel on your chest. Heavy armor could also damage you more in a fall.

I love how the blacksmith girl is hotter and objectively better than the love interest in every way.
You don't love anything
The character Jocelyn IMO is the greatest flaw of the movie: she is just there, without a function except being love interest, is rather annoying and her costumes are horrible (won't even mention the anachronism). The actress did what she could with very little.
Maybe it was supposed to be.a love triangle but didn't pan out. The princess was shallow despite recognizing William's noble traits which seems out of character. The blacksmith girl just became one of the boys after her introduction and not very notable later in the movie. You can remove the blacksmith girl in the later acts and not much would change.

It’s funny when you think about it. She basically learned how to make spring steel. Too hard and it either shatters when hit or takes the full hit with no give which would knock him right off the horse. Too flexible or thin and it would crush and his chest then takes a lance right around his heart. Also by making it thinner, she cut the amount of weight the horse now has to carry which allows Will to go faster. No wonder her knocked the other knight off.
There’s a theory that mythological swords that were said to be unbreakable were just regular swords, but the blacksmith who made it discovered steel and just told everyone it was magic to keep it a secret

What it actually did was introduce carbon into the iron, creating a rudimentary steel.

I mean, even you’re talking about a war horse, the difference in weight is negligible at that point. That world be an animal weighing in at 1200-1400 pounds. The knight is basically a hat to it.
@@seandlax9 any small difference in weight means a small change in velocity, as it takes just that little bit less force to get to high speeds. So if we’re talking about a typical war horse going full pelt, it will be just a smidge faster if the weight on its back is even a bit lighter, that speed is then all transferred into the small point at the tip of the lance upon impact.
Sure the difference in speed is negligible, but when you translate it to that small point, even a small difference becomes significant.

Long long ago. Before Nike became a multi million dollar company that sold athlete shoes. It was a small blacksmith shop that made armor and weapons for jousting tournaments in merry old Britannia.
Imo this is Heath's finest movie. His other movie's he is a talented actor, but this to me seemed his most natural.

In real life, the purpose of joust was not to make fall the opponent, but to break your own spear into the shield of the opponent. Victory is for the one who breaks the more spears

And this is where the is the misconception that knight armor is heavy
Well the Heaviest Knight’s armour came about in the Late Medieval period when the excessively powerful Bows and Early hand cannons/Muskets were becoming more prevalent, which eventually led to the point where the drawbacks of heavy armour were outweighed (hah) the perceved benefits. They could withstand bullets and arrows, but could only fight for half as long. So Heavy Armour was rather short lived. This is also why as Firearms improved over time, full body plate was slowly phased out in favour of a single breastplate, with supplemental armour only in key specific areas as the knees, elbows, wrists.
Knight armor was not that heavy, but jousting armor was

There's a bunch that goes into metallurgy, not familiar myself but they grade steel into a ton of categories, apparently 3500 different grades, so I'm assuming the implication is she discovered one of the better variations, think it's usually the amount of carbon that gets in. Wording is just super simplified I guess.

The stereotype of knights being unable to get on horses without steps and so on is from a false reading of the battle of agincourt. Several elderly and disabled knights wanted to ride for their king so were observed needing assistance to get on their horses. Plate armor only weighed between 14 and 25 pounds. Armys soldiers today wear more gear. Add to fact knights were professional athletes who trained constantly and the idea they couldn't get on a horse seems even dumber

I hate this scene. Leaving aside the Nike product placement, real armor IS thin. It derives its strength from its shape not its thickness, and its not so cumbersome that one can't easily mount his own horse. William's armor is all wrong though. Those dangly bits on the sides are called tassets and are supposed to protect the legs, but their all the way up by his hips. His hips should be protected by the Faulds (those horizontal bands at his waist) but their also to high. That gap between them should be around his groin. The knights are right to laugh at him.

jousting armor was a lot heavier for more protection since they didnt want to get seriously hurt while essnetially sparring and even with the blunt tip and the easy to shatter birch, you would want to minimize the chances of accidents. take probably the most famous example, the frogmouth helmet, it has never been used in a battle (or there arent any notworthy records) it was purposefully made for jousting
also the armor composition after he mounted the horse seems good enough, infact taking a look at jousting armor pictures online, you can see that the armor shown here is fairly accurate for an adventure-comedy movie, plate that looks a size too small and large at the same time. in the movie maybe its a bit too small but they prolly cut it so that Ledger has an easier time getting on and off the horse.
@@allorfh2495 I imagine the extra weight also helped put a lot more momentum into their strikes and made them much harder to unhorse. Wearing light armor would just send you flying that much easier.
In the Bible, it speaks of putting on the armor of God. I think this movie clip is a perfect illustration of what that might look like.
Even then they were stuffing unwanted and unnecessary female characters into roles that did not suit them.
