- Here we see a great example of the ingenuity and resourcefullness of MTA New York City Transit's operational managers, who quickly arranged an ad-hoc terminal operation at Times Square after a slow-speed derailment at 96th St prevented all northbound train movement north of Times Square. This video shows several interesting, rare, and unusual routings through the Times Square interlocking, including the use of Track "M". Enjoy!

Nice video, the whole crash been a mess
Track M was designed for short turns at either 34th or 42nd. The Low Vs would use the pocket track M when running between 96th and 42nd for "Subway Day", for example. On the Lexington Line, Grand Central can also be used as a terminal.
Unusual operation for 1 and 3 trains. 👌💚
0:14 I rode that car 2250 ngl the operator was sounded kinda mad in the cab when we stopped at a red signal at Franklin street
Nice
You know why is running to 42th cause in 96 there was a crash on the train so the r62a 1 was crashed on a the switch track
So at 42st they were only using the express tracks to turn trains around right?
i noticed that the red line was using a completely different line the other day and was wondering about that
Cool
1 train operating express s/b because can not get back to local track that direction until Chambers Street.
The 3 terminating at TSQ is nothing. but the 1? Never in my life i seen the 1 train end at TSQ. Guess its the first time, unusual catch but nice video.
The 1 terminated at Times Square and 14 Street during the early days following the 9/11 attacks. It ended up turning at Chambers Street at night but went to New Lots Avenue during the day to replace the 3 that ended up terminating at 14 Street. The 2 also terminated at Times Square for a while too as a result of the aforementioned attack before it went back to Flatbush Avenue via Clark Street (also known as the Bush).
There was a G.O where the 1 went to 14, and another when it went to Chambers
The 3 usually terminates at TSQ then goes uptown. This is going downtown
The main point of interest is trains terminating at Times Square and returning back south, rather than north which is the usual case. The interlocking configuration here is very interesting, especially with regards to turnarounds to head back south.
@@DJHammersTrains Ah. I understand now
Were 2 trains affected by the 96th Street derailment
Yes severely most were rerouted via the 5
Going uptown
The 123 were all affected
the 2 train can be turned into a 5, and sent down Lexington Ave, since they share a common southern terminal
I have never taken the 1 train or the 3 train
I think the MTA should continue investing on more new trains and CTBC to improve the subway system. Because this fixed block signal system is causing too many accident is a very old system.
It's definitely gonna be a while for CBTCS on the 4 5 6 S Lexington Avenue lines and seventh Avenue 1 2 3 lines. The R262/As has not gotten here yet. They would definitely have to find a builder who is gonna make the R262/As open and close ways for the iRT lines A devisins .
@@leecornwell5632 the MTA has been so slow when it comes to technology compared to other countries outside the US that have better technology equipment than us. This is why the subway system is so crappy.
While CBTC is proven to provide tangible capacity benefits, it is almost very important to note that the legacy fixed block wayside signal system at NYCT is very safe. In fact, it experiences a much lower frequency of wrong-side failures than many other types of signal systems, such as the audio frequency track circuit-based signal systems installed on other American subway systems in the 1960s-1980s.
what is track M
Pocket track (relay) between the express tracks between 34th and 42nd.
so who’s to blame for this crash?
Me
What happening 🤨🫤
