A lot of people are missing the point as regards to JLR. The old Defender was part of a range of vehicles, not just one. As such, Defender was too costly to produce and didn't return in terms of sales. For a company like JLR to produce something like the Grenadier would not have been cost effective in terms of development as they still have the same problem as before - who to sell to. The MOD was the largest procurer of Defender - but the dynamics of modern warfare mean that Defender is now obsolete - no matter what JLR might have done to improve the vehicle. That then leaves Aid Agencies and Farmers, both of whom now buy cheaper and more reliable vehicles from the far east.Ok, so that then only leaves the enthusiasts. Now we see the reason why JLR didn't progress with the basic Defender design. It's all about sales and profit. So, with New Defender, they immediately capture today's target audience who are obsessed with technology and don't have to rely on their brain to do the driving, but can immediately buy in to the brand and heritage. These are the very people who would never have bought old Defender. New Defender fits that bill. It can also be sold in the USA.That alone equates to bigger sales. Ineos are in a unique position. They are small enough to produce the low volumes of vehicles which will be demanded. However, the vehicle needs to prove it is more than capable to take away sales from Mitsubishi and Toyota - I believe the Grenadier can do this - however, it's not going to happen over night. Can Ineos remain profitable in it's first few years and become a market leader ? We'll see. I,for one, wish them every success.
The UK MOD does still buy some Discovery models just as the US DOD still operates commercial trucks for some jobs. It’s primarily the jobs of patrol where thin skinned vehicles have issues particularly around Asymmetric warfare. In logistics or rear line duties conventional vehicles like the new Defender, Discovery, Chevy Suburban, Land cruiser or pickup trucks are still cost effective. In support of conventional warfare modes they would also still be cost effective. For units like Airborne or SF who aim to raid and escape light skinned 4x4 are still used and procured. Just last week the US DOD bought a modified Chevy Colorado based vehicles for Airborne units. In the decades before the modern conflicts in the Middle East the biggest issues for older combat vehicles like the Jeep was its electrical system. It could not match the rise in communication systems. This was a major reason for shifts to newer vehicles. JLR however as you rightfully point out isn’t simply a military manufacturer. They under themselves, Ford and today Tata are also a civilian maker. That means complying with the environmental regulations, safety regulations, as well as having a cost point and feature point to be able to not just sell to entities like Agencies and Corporations but also individuals. The Land Rover family as did the Jeep (to a far less extent), Hummer, and G wagon crossed the line from a purely utility based military model to a Commercial, and Luxury branding. As the rules of environmental protection and luxury brand feature centric needs moved to the forefront. That old school model just wasn’t going to be able to do the job. The fuel and pollution, the complex needs of operation, the niche mindset just couldn’t justify the old Defender as a commercial vehicle. Particularly since SUVs in Europe, the UK and beyond have moved from niche to as common place. Even brands one would never have in the past expected SUV offerings like Aston Martin, Rolls Royce, and Bentley now offer Crossover class CUVs. What we in the US call a “Mall Crawler”. With features and systems porting from top of the line models to more and more lower ranges. It’s harder and harder to keep up. The G Wagon had to get a total refresh to keep as a commercial offering in the luxury class. So to did the Defender. JLR has to like all car makers stir the proverbial pot or else they risk loosing market place. Look at the UK market today and then back how many British Brands remain? Not many, and those that are one trick pony have a habit of failure. There is always a risk when some call for the old school to become Luddites. To eschew the new to the point of trapping oneself into only failure. The Questions for Grenadier is how will this place in price and capacity vs JLR, Imports from Ford, Jeep, Mercedes and let’s not forget the triple threat from Toyota Land Cruiser, Hilux and 4tuner. Or even potential off road EV types like The very similar looking Bollinger EV.
Sean Stevens We don’t have a price point for the Grenadier however in the US the base line 110 Defender is $49,900 that’s the no frills trim. This year a company called Twister which is a Texas based daughter of a UK firm has launched a classic Defender clone of it’s own the Twisted NA-V8 that’s running $250,000 US. A Bollinger B1 is about $125,000. Compare that to a Toyota Hilux at $24,000 again base models. I think the Japanese models are secure in price point. If this is as I suspect just an enthusiast model off roader and not actually targeting being a work machine it would be easier to establish the brand in a $50,000-$250,000 price point then try and bring the price down.
Try driving a Disco or Rangie with more sensors than a Boeing 777 in the Australian out back ,get a bit of bull dust in the mix and hey presto, electrical melt down or worse. I didn't mention the new Defender because it could be years before Aussie's get to drive one.
chris day considering the Range Rover is the most on road trim next to Evoque or Volar not sure that’s a fare comparison. LR has always been known for reliability issues. Overheating, loss of parts. Even the old Defender was notorious for that. If you want a vehicle built decades out of date yet able to take whatever terrain you throw at it I recommend buying a used Jeep. The Question here is as @User name is trying to point out. The maker is a true start up in the line. If the guys bank rolling this don’t make money back this is over. The guy at the lead might be happy to just walk away with a retro Defender clone he built in his garage as opposed to a Twisted NA V8 or a G wagon... heck he probably has those both on order with a pair of new maxed trim Defenders on order. But that’s not an issue really. This kind of business man has the safety net to walk away a few million in the whole then start again. I have seen it. A well to due type with an established firm underneath him decided to branch out and go a new direction. Starts out good he lays down the investment but when it’s clear he wasn’t going to recoup he folded it. Sold it off went back to his established line. We want it to succeed sure but just because the founder is part of the potential costumer base doesn’t mean it will. This could just be a limited run deal depending on price point. Most of the off road fans are not without a budget. If this comes in at a G wagon price point most people who drive in the Outback arn’t going to buy. Making matters worse is as a new maker without an established parts supply and repair good luck if your life depends on the new vehicle. LR has a reputation as a garage queen but that queen has service departments globally. If parts break they can fix it. If it has an “electric meltdown” (Something I find as ludicrous Hyperbole as let’s face it all the new builds Jeep, Toyota, Suzuki ecta... are loaded with sensors. Unless you are buying a vehicle from North Korea.) generally they can be repaired or replaced. Grenadier is a real unknown. If it breaks a part where do you get it fixed? Where do you get that part? Do you have to ship it back to Wales? Do you call Inoes or Magna?
Looks great, perfect in every aspect. Only potential issue i see is if it costs too much, then it get filed in the geländewagen-segment where it’s a great offroader....- but no one is gonna offroad a 100.000 euro car.... then it just becomes a brat-wagon..... i hope that does not happen....
So far I like what I see. The Defender had the advantage of long travel coil springs, this enabled me to travel intercity on aweful roads in West Africa at speed gliding over the surface. The early G Wagons that I drove did not have suspension as tall as the LR, but was more comfortable day to day due to its unique progressive bumpstops. To combine the two is brilliant. All we need now are bushes that do not disintegrate every other year and we will be laughing. Well done.
They're working with Magna who build the G-wagon for Mercedes. Sounds like they've taken the best features from the best 4x4's e.g. progressive bump stops on the G-wagon and left out the worst, like electronic management systems e.g on the G-Wagon and any L-R.
This is going to be an amazing vehicle - something that stands apart from the other SUVs - a hard working but refined quality vehicle, that is customisable to meet customers’ needs. Really optimistic about what it can be. Maybe crowd-funding would help bring it the rest of the way to production..
I'm amazed by the great choices made. Interestingly most come back to that of a defender, which is fine in my eyes. It's nicely different enough too. My real curiosity and hope, after fixing series and defenders, is if they have solved the classic landrover problems. Rotting bulkhead, old fashioned steering box and power steering, messy electrics, water ingress, noisy interior, fiddly fittings that show down repairs... E.g. a car that can really be maintained.. This will also help the world wide acceptance, possibly is the car is supplied with a manual that allows normal garages to maintain them well. This could be supported by grenadier through a central website /database that maintains the car's history without requiring expensive dealerships.
I have a huge admiration and respect going for this. It takes a lot of guts and I wish them all the best. It needs to be more reliable than the Defender which I am sure it will be. Wow.
Land Rover pedigree and ingenuity reimagined for the 21st century, kinda feels like a new generation Star Trek. Since we can no longer have the LR Defender wishing the INEOS Grenadier the best sales success as their reward for being bold!
Sir, Send this vehicles to India, and you see the massive victory for this vehicles, within five years you can sell more than 25 crores of these vehicles!God bless!!👍
Now this is the Lord of LC, Patrol, Pajero, Defender and its likes. This is something which you would call it as an asset and would mention it in your will for your legal heirs.
Very happy to see a strong 4x4 like Land Rover, never forget the style of Land Rover and Grenadier has filled the point of loss of Land Rover production as well as keep the design of Granadier for the future.
Finally!!!! After shout-down of Defender project it was a matter of time this vehicle to happen... Most efective construction of proper off-roader (Toyota 80, Nissan Y60, Defender, G-klass) is the only way. Almost impossible to believe big automotive can not understand that. Well, bookkeepers run those bussnesses so they must not understand that ;-) Finally - well done. Happy for You mates.
I've been driving Land Rovers for almost 20 years but wouldn't plunk down hard earned money on anything they currently make. Land Rover left the door wide open and Ineos walked through. Best of luck to what may likely become the new standard in utility vehicles.
What an absolutely beautiful vehicle. You have hit it on the nose truly what people are looking for. Over engineered drivetrain and fantastic classic lines. If you are looking for somebody to test drive this in the United States please let me know.
If they're truly manufacturing this for the utilitarian market it has to be priced right. Period. It also needs diff lock, impressive towing capacity, self serviceability, galvanized frame and aluminum body. And if they're going with a BMW engine they need to offer other options along with a manual transmission.
If the reliability stands up, they will have a goldmine on their hands because, the new Defender is no longer tough enough for military use - which is a very large market beyond the commercial and private market. Land Rover dropped the ball there, by building a monocoque chassis Defender, it is no longer tough enough stand up to the rigors of military use.
@@iandavis8725 There are many military organisations of different countries over the world - there is still a market for them in those other countries. And the British Army still doesn't have a direct replacement for the Defender - www.quora.com/Now-that-Land-Rover-Defender-production-has-ended-what-will-be-the-British-armys-replacement
Great! There are classic elements combined with new technology and technology, unlike some car manufacturers that ignore the feelings of old car friends. LR owners can choose this style !!
Certainly looks that way. But what a simple straight forward practical design to follow. A lesson to learn here about body design, would be, to look at for example kenworth trucks. Why Kenworth? Because the outer design has not changed, even after decades, because they weren't built as show ponies but workhorses, their SELLING POINT is their dependability and reliability. Unfortunately most manufacturers of 4x4's have departed from that aspect of manufacturing to try to entice people with electronics. Landrover itself being a very classic example, to where they are now at a 4x4 nobody wants. So back to the design, the shape is practical. Square shapes are always easier to pack tban those with slanting angles. The design looks like a 4x4 should, as a workhorse. Hopefully they have departed from from the landrover fault of where the passengers don't have to be contortionists to look out the window.
Mark !! Just the other day i was thinking about the greatest series on tv, ever! - Building Pilgrim AC Cobra made with Sierra parts and 5.7 V8 Chevy engine, Restauration of Jaguar E type roadster, MGB roadster, Westfield racing car build, Land Rover rebuild, the bikes - Triumph, Harley, VW Trike.. oh, man.. good days! I never saw these cars and bikes until then. I was a kid. Let me say Thank you for the excelent entertainment ! Should have made many more rebuilds. Glad to see you're doing alright and gave it a stop at youtube corner. :) Have a great day, mate ! 🙋🏻♂️
Hope it is a success as landrover dropped the ball this is what I thought we were going to be delivered,, and did not get any of the other items in the list that this vehicle has,, top job ☘️☘️👍👍👍
Die hard old Defender lovers rejoice. A modern look of the old Defender without the Land Rover (inconsistent & questionable) build quality (I hope). With its spec and relatively low volume build, it's going to be pricey.
Can't wait for it to come. Hopefully my Defender lasts that long. Got a 90 but with kids it became too small. And I would never buy the new "Defender".
Was really excited it would be built in Wales, unlike the new Defender. If they build it in the Daimler plant in France It will be a great let down. Not a ‘British’ replacement for the Defender. Surely it is international enough already; German engine and gearbox, Austrian engineering, Portuguese body and frame, Italian axles and probably loads of Japanese components.
Joaofigas1 They would have to turn the engines down in power, I guess. The current 3.0 BMWs do anywhere between 260 and north of 400hp, dependent on model and diesel/petrol. 180-200hp would be awesome for a car like this though
Great start! Form follows function. Cab/chassis for trayback/slide-on camper/fire unit etc (like Toyota) would be killer. Suspension looks proper. 50mm lift kit option. All the best from Oz, (Troopie owner for 31 years).
Fantastic love the name and concept. At last a pick up with ability and pay load. My Defender 130 needs the 2.2t rear axle rating as I carry a large demountable. Will be putting it on my shopping list. Love the Defender/ G wagon / Jeep combo in the Grenadier. Well done Ineos. Who cares about the number of usb charging points versus appropriate diff locks and axle articulation .
Land Rover really screwed up when they just beefed up that ridiculous Freelander and called it the new Defender. If it ain’t broke you idiots at Tata, don’t fix it. So glad to see someone pick up the ubiquitous Defender theme and run with it. As a Rover owner for over 25 years I just pray the Grenadier will be available in the USA ‘cause I’ll never buy a new LR.
I have owned 5 Defenders and of course am an LR enthusiast BUT this is what we wanted in the new model. And look at its engineering pedigree!! Will a '90' version be made??
A Defender 110 owner for 20 years, many people have said that I should buy a new motor, response was; it is easier to change the wife than the motor, now this Grenadier has defiantly got me thinking! When will come to Brazil?
The wheel reinvented yet again! I wonder how this vehicle will stack up against the Land Cruisers and Wranglers. As far as the military off-roader market is concerned, I believe it's been shifting to a two-prong scenario: heavily armored combat area dedicated vehicles such as JLTV and regular stock 4x4s such as Suburbans for non-combat duties at military bases, supply, etc. In other words they don't need versatile Defenders anymore but rather specialized vehicles.
Grant Watts Maybe in the UK, but that’s about it. Ask africans or australians about Off-roading, and they’ll all give you a lecture about how awesome landcruisers are
I am Land Rover by heart and soul , But this is what we were wishing for the new defender ... super work team keep it up

@user name The owner of Ineos is a hard core Land Rover fanatic and that's how Grenadier got off the ground. Good on him.
chris day considering the Range Rover is the most on road trim next to Evoque or Volar not sure that’s a fare comparison.
Let’s hope they do a very bog standard one so that a simple spanner and screw diver in the field would do a small boge repair to get you home .
Bring these to the US and take my money.
British manufacturing has just be shafted again. A British idea that's all!
David Coram too true, but then again someone at the top echelon who made the decision is not visionary, just numbers focused. 😞
Well if its true that they move to France to produce it then I certainly won't be buying one! Disgusting
I would buy if they sourced most parts from Britain.
Unions destroyed British manufacturing. And gave foreign manufacturing an advantage.
Now it's well known that the labour force and skills are gone.
@@thelonglane so how come France are doing OK? They are heavily unionised and strike if the day ends in a "Y".
Wow.
Rear lights and front middle lights need sorting out, apart from that the outside looks good, when will we see the interior?
I think it only looks odd because there's no bull bar, the lights would be either side then?
Land Rover pedigree and ingenuity reimagined for the 21st century, kinda feels like a new generation Star Trek. Since we can no longer have the LR Defender wishing the INEOS Grenadier the best sales success as their reward for being bold!
Sir, Send this vehicles to India, and you see the massive victory for this vehicles, within five years you can sell more than 25 crores of these vehicles!God bless!!👍
Wow I want one watch your back Land Rover we have a new boy in town , well done team
Il definitely buy this vehicle
Now this is the Lord of LC, Patrol, Pajero, Defender and its likes. This is something which you would call it as an asset and would mention it in your will for your legal heirs.
Very happy to see a strong 4x4 like Land Rover, never forget the style of Land Rover and Grenadier has filled the point of loss of Land Rover production as well as keep the design of Granadier for the future.
Are they going to use galv chassis so that it's really built to last?
Brilliant. Thanks for posting.
BMW power train.
Magna Steyr as their engineering partner.
Sorry, lads. This won’t be affordable for most of us.
You are right.
True
I've been driving Land Rovers for almost 20 years but wouldn't plunk down hard earned money on anything they currently make. Land Rover left the door wide open and Ineos walked through. Best of luck to what may likely become the new standard in utility vehicles.
Need to build it in Australia.
Mark Wakefield and test it!!
this is Awesome keep on going PLEASE!!!!
About time a modern rugged 4x4 was developed, not a Chelsea tractor aimed at the rich! A usable, affordable replacement to the Defender-90-110
i love the car , i hope we soon can see the interiour
What an absolutely beautiful vehicle. You have hit it on the nose truly what people are looking for. Over engineered drivetrain and fantastic classic lines. If you are looking for somebody to test drive this in the United States please let me know.
Looking forward to see it in the market! Great idea, all the best from Italy.
If they're truly manufacturing this for the utilitarian market it has to be priced right. Period.
It also needs diff lock, impressive towing capacity, self serviceability, galvanized frame and aluminum body. And if they're going with a BMW engine they need to offer other options along with a manual transmission.
A manual transmission would be appreciated, it would also help to keep the price down a little
First line said, "form follows function" I hit subscribe.
Looks like a hybrid of a defender and a 1st Generation G-Wagon. Looks Great.
Out of Facebook I will meet my all childhood friends with this....best friend
Will be great to be the first owner of the Grenadier in Africa, a present would be great.
Triode 12 Military have already chosen a replacement a long time ago.
It’s not possible to build a niche vehicle if you are of their size and cost. But a smaller outfit can ...
@@iandavis8725 There are many military organisations of different countries over the world - there is still a market for them in those other countries. And the British Army still doesn't have a direct replacement for the Defender - www.quora.com/Now-that-Land-Rover-Defender-production-has-ended-what-will-be-the-British-armys-replacement
not with a shitty BMW engine. I'd go for MWM Diesel. otherwise looks ok
@@triode1212 The British now use the ocelot. And most other forces have moved on to land cruisers or even g wagons.
Great! There are classic elements combined with new technology and technology, unlike some car manufacturers that ignore the feelings of old car friends.
LR owners can choose this style !!
This is going to be an absolutely positively amazing vehicle
Welcome new ineos grenadiers to the world I love it hopefully it will be within our means to afford one
Load of waffle about the look being engineer led.... Did the engineers have a stash of Land Rover magazines in the office?
hard work for the designer? nope. I think 20 mins and solidworks with some landie mags.
It is a ' Land Rover '. With a different badge.
If the door hinges were hiding and the doors are straight. Instead of curved.
Nothing new.
It dousnt even comes close to a Land rover....and thats a good thing . .. will be way better than annything land rover ever build.
@@pinzgauerbelgium Nope. I agree to disagree with you. It is a Land Rover clone.
Have a great day, mate !
🙋🏻♂️
Now to be made in France.
Its back to Japanese pickups then.
The Land Rover Defender is coming back 🔙 in a new name.. 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
I remember traveling with my uncle in his defender. He died tow years ago. I would buy this car.
Hope it is a success as landrover dropped the ball this is what I thought we were going to be delivered,, and did not get any of the other items in the list that this vehicle has,, top job ☘️☘️👍👍👍
Brilliant. I'll take one, the new Defender in comparison is a city car, no longer a recognisable adventure car.
Im so pleased to see this plus you lot are crushing cycling too.
Inspired by defender......looking forward to engine variants and price range
Any mention of likely $$$$'s? They must have spent a fortune developing this, which of course they need to recover.
BMW 3.0 petrol and diesel. Possibly a V8 too
Es mas parecido a un Land Rover Cazorla 110cv tdi.......... no están inventando nada nuevo.😎😎
@@MrSharpe95 3.0 damm its too much for a jeep , should be around 2.3 or 2.5 max
Looks like a winner to me!
The new Defender by Ineos.
all the best. hope to see this baby soon. the front with 4 lights on the same plane)almost same size) may generate a bit of a polarizing opinion.
10:30 they say, before potentially cancelling the Wales site in favour of taking over an old Merc factory in France. :(
I would have ordered one but if they do end up turning their backs on the UK I'm out.
If the Welsh assembly don't want them, they have to build it somewhere, no?
That's what Land Rover needed as the new generation of Defender
Land Rover really screwed up when they just beefed up that ridiculous Freelander and called it the new Defender. If it ain’t broke you idiots at Tata, don’t fix it. So glad to see someone pick up the ubiquitous Defender theme and run with it. As a Rover owner for over 25 years I just pray the Grenadier will be available in the USA ‘cause I’ll never buy a new LR.
Sooo beautifull, looks better than the New DEFENDER 2020
I agree.
Desde Costa Rica, parece un vehículo de altas prestaciones.
I have owned 5 Defenders and of course am an LR enthusiast BUT this is what we wanted in the new model. And look at its engineering pedigree!! Will a '90' version be made??
Now…. This is what 2022 Land Rover Defender should look like ……!!!!!
This is real….!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Much better than the new Defender.
Will the be an option for toyota engine and running gear?😁😁😁
I’ve had defenders all my life I’m sad to say I won’t have the new one .
But as soon as I can order one of these
I gladly send them my money
Land Rover left a gap, and Ineos found it. The Land Cruiser 70 series now has some competition
12:44 Es como si un Land Rover Defender y un Mercedes clase G tuvieran un Hijo .
Alexander Mikhailov Toyota and jeep are not the bench mark for off-road or military, defender is.
Grant Watts Maybe in the UK, but that’s about it. Ask africans or australians about Off-roading, and they’ll all give you a lecture about how awesome landcruisers are
New defender love it.
Rimane sempre una copia dell'originale....possiedo il 110 defender del 2009 e ne sono fiero......auguri per il progetto in corso...
