    Mr Fillingham, I must say I enjoy your films very much. There's a calmness over them that I find relaxing. Not to mention the content that is down-to-earth and useable. The music fits like a glove and your editing is spot on! Very well done indeed! :-)

    I must have watched this video around 20 times! Well done Stuart, I always enjoy the banter and reflections. I am a 100% Triumph fan, fell off a Tiger Cub way back in the late 60's and now after a few (cough, cough) years and many Triumphs, have acquired a totally restored 1973 T140V, reclaimed from the US and registered here. The owner has spent well over £6000 and ALL parts seem to be new. So in effect, its a brand new bike.
    I have already been guided by yourself re placing it in hibernation through the recent winter weather and now its time to clean everything down and get the bike ready for some miles through the leafy lanes around Hemswell and into beautiful Lincoln City and cathedral area. Good luck to all venturing out after such a long spell of inactivity, keep safe and once again a HUGE thanks for these wonderful inspiring videos, Liam

    Great video and love the longer format (although I suspect that is probably much more effort). I'm really happy with the valuable information you give out and while I don't have a nice new T120, so much of what you have on your videos works just fine with my 1999 Triumph Legend TT. The Halcyon mirrors have worked out fantastic!
    On top of the great info in you videos, can I just say that the production quality and style is outstanding. It really is the kind of quality that you would get on a big dollar professional television show.
    Keep up the great work...I look forward to your videos every weekend

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  Před 7 lety +2

      Hi David, thank you, I believe it doesnt matter what your bike is, or whether its old or new, they are all fantastic and represent a big financial investment. so its well worth the effort to preserve them.
      The only problem with the longer format is that people tend to get bored and click off before the finish, hence the comments in this weeks video, a lot of people last week were asking questions that were answered in the latter part of the video, because they had clicked off at 5 or 6 minutes and it became quite frustrating asking them to watch the video, again, all the way through to obtain the answer!
      The longer format is not that much more work than the usual 6 to 8 minutes really i always get plenty of footage and just ruthlessly edit it down.
      Thanks for your comment on the production quality it is something i put a lot of effort in to, and im constantly looking at ways of improving it further. You tube is very saturated with creators now and i believe viewers expectations on production quality are getting higher. and certainly for me a 720p helmet camera just doesnt cut it any more!

The only thing I did differently was to use my leaf blower to dry it, which worked very well. Oh, and got the hanky out for the bits I'd missed when I'd put everything away, as you do... Thanks for the insights.

      Hello Stuart! It feels great ... and I've got absolutely the bike I wanted! In former days I rode a BMW R100RT and had a lot of fun with it. Only on hot summer days it drove me insane because I was sweatening behind its fairing, there was no air cooling me inside of my protection clothing. So I wanted a naked bike.
      It's always a question of your personal matter of taste, but the design of the new BMW's don't fit my needs of style, because they in between of being modern or being classic. Triumph did a very good job with its modern classics - and the first bike which impressed me was in '69 when I was a kid a Triumph which was owned by a neighbour. I've done 5.600 kms up to now (300 on last Sunday) and my skills develop ... (I hope)
      I've done a safety training and one for getting into right leaning angle (?) in September I would go to the racetrack for view leading and curve technique You see "it got me back"

    Stuart, excellent video sir! The only thing I do a little different is to use a light air compressor after drying as much as possible with a cloth. It has the same effect as riding the bike in the final step. That said, I always try to take the bike out and work all the controls. It's amazing where water pools up and can cause some rusting. Thank you sir for all the effort! I learned a lot and will definitely add it to my regimen!

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  Před 7 lety +7

      Thank you sir, have to admit I do use a compressor myself, but not everyone owns a compressor so I thought I would leave it out and just go down a route everyone could follow without having to lay out for expensive equipment!

      Excellent video. I currently use S100 - have used it on my previous bikes and now the T120 with success. May have to try Muck Off when I run out of S100. Another air method I use for preliminary drying is my gas powered leaf blower - more mobile and not as concentrated as an air compressor nozzle.

      Also use a leaf blower here to finish things off .. you´d be surprised at all the water that sits in nooks and crannies .. a compressor on the other hand often has oil and especially dirty rusty water sitting in the bottom of it´s tank and that grime can be blown out with the air even though it may not always be noticeable… before wiping dry though a bucket of water mixed with a little Neophos shine from the dish washer thrown over the bike makes for a streak free finish

    Stuart (If I may call you that)- I have to admit- when I first stumbled onto this video, I thought to myself "oh God, here we go!" But then I sat down and took the time to watch. And rewatch. And watch yet again. And then I proceeded to watch pretty much your entire collection. And I must say, you are nothing short of addicting. I don't know if it's the quality of your videography, or your sharp droll wit ("I would rather put my John Thomas in the hands of a madman with a pair of carpet scissors than use chemicals on my bike.."). I chuckle every time I hear that line. Anyway, I intend to apply your methods in washing my T100 (and to cleaning the chain). I do have a question regarding some of the bits on your bike, however, namely your foot pegs, turn signals and bar-end mirrors. Are they stock on the T120, or did you add them? If you would be so kind as to let me know where I could get them, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you, and thank you for your wonderful videos. I think I'll subscribe now :)

      stuart fillingham: No thank YOU for making the effort and taking the time to show a better way of how to clean a T120 that you own and actually ride. Don't get me wrong, I've seen the videos about spraying foam all over the bike to clean it but I personally don't have/nor want the equipment to do that. And how you show a one bucket method is practical and makes sense on how you use it. sound advice Stuart. I do things slightly differently and use different products but overall do much the same process in touching the bike as little as possible. My diffetences are I use fs 365, a jetwash, but with a very soft wide fan and a ph neutral TFR from powermaxed which is far cheaper that muckoff too followed by a good quality car shampoo ( currently meguirs gold). As far as the drying is concerned you're right not many have a compressor. A cheaper alternative is a pet dryer off ebay. They're normally around the £60 mark but allow you to dry the bike without touching it, though it's best to direct the air blast across things like switches rather than at them so it draws the water out rather than blow it further in. I found it to be an Informative video, Thanks cheers Ade

    Back in my mountain biking days I had a tip to use Fenwicks, similar to Muc Off, but a concentrate so when diluted went much further and I’m still using it. After a ride covered in .....mud. Spray it on, go fill a bucket of hot water and back out to wash the muck off five minutes later and dry in a well ventilated area. Final stage with the motorcycle is to wax on, wax off Mr Miyagi. Unless off course you’ve ridden through the entrance to a farm and ‘it’s’ baked on by the time you get home...interestingly used as a robust building material and equally challenging to remove! Appreciate that chemical compositions can be adjusted over time due to various regulations so can’t comment but hopefully still equally efficacious.

    Stuart...got my T100 brand new 3 weeks ago...hoping to give it its first wash in the next day or so...soom real good tip in the vid.
    But reading the Triumph owners manual today about washing the bike...and would you believe there are around 4 pages.
    Anyway gives some do and don't...one it says cover the electrics on the handlebars with plastic bags with elastic bands to seal....also cover the ignition switch...and then it says to plug the rear end of the exhaust pipes...with them pointing down water will run inside if they are not plugged.
    I have no idea how important these actions are but I have got my bungs and bags ready.
    Keep up the good work...was your T120 brand new when you got it....its a credit to you mate.

    I did use the Muc Off cleaner on my 2001 BMW R1100s until very recently and always found it to be very good and has kept the Bemmer looking pretty good. When the last lot run out I tried the WD40 cleaner spray similar to the Muc Off cleaner but not quite as effective. after seeing a comparison test in Ride Magazine I have just ordered and received some Ammo cleaning solutions which I will be trying in the very near future. Just a little off subject your Triumph looks fantastic and I'm looking to buy another bike so I can do some restoration on the Beemer, I normally take around a 10-day touring trip to Europe each year which involves at least one long day in the saddle getting to or from an area I'd like to get to and was wondering if you have made a longish trip on your Triumph and how you have found it comfort wise special coming from a GS.

  • @ianwatson3315
    @ianwatson3315 Před 4 lety

    Salt in used as a thickening agent to make the product look thick, concentrated quality product. Alkaline is used for dissolving organic material. There is little dirt that would really need a high ph. Safer bet is a neutral ph as a high ph can mess up your leather seat. All soap bubbles do are trap the dirt into the bubbles so you can rinse it off. All cleaners are acid or alkaline. Muck off is a ph of 11.4, that is not mild..and if you look at the data sheet, muck off contains sodium salt.

    Hi Stuart. Your videoas are very informative and show you have put a great deal of time and effort into producing them. Thanks for posting these, they really are very good.
    I am new to your channel and have not yet bought a motorbike. I came across your videos whilst researching which bike to buy. Ive narrowed it down to the T120 and will test ride one in the near future. One of my biggest worries was how to keep it clean and this video plus the one with the GT45 spray really puts my mind at rest. Would you suggest any polish for the paintwork? also what about the leather seat?? should that have any treatment.
    A question unrelated to this but Ive seen customised bikes done by a French firm called BAAK. Do you have an opinion about customising in general or this company in particular.
    Thanks
    Andrew

      @stuartfillingham  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Andrew, nice to hear from you and thanks for watching!
      I'm hoping maybe to do a review on the t100 in the near future as I think the t120 and t100 are going to be compared very closely by prospective purchasers.
      The seat on my bike if it is leather (personally I think I was lied to) doesn't seem to need any care as it is supposedly PU coated. but a proper leather seat will need some sort of dubbin or similar waterproof treatment on a regular basis.
      BAAK make some very sexy gear and I have not heard anything bad about them, but have no experience of their products myself!
      The moderns classic Triumph is all about customisation! and the freedom to make it personal to you sir go for it!

  • @daveharriman2756
    @daveharriman2756 Před 7 lety +1

    Good instructive video Stuart, one thing, do you clean the rear wheel rim separately , to get the sticky chain lube off? maybe I use too much lube, or the wrong sort, because I do have to use a degreasing fluid on a separate rag, on the inside of the left hand silencer too, it's only a few spots, but it can contaminate your cleaning mit
    apart from that I endorse your method totally!

    • @stuartfillingham
      @stuartfillingham  Před 7 lety +1

      Hi Dave, Thanks, I use a good anti fling lube, I always wipe off the excess before it dries, and leave it overnight before riding. so I have minimal problems with lube fling. I always wash the rear wheel last so any pickup is not transferred elsewhere. the mitt is then washed before its used again.
      I always finish by waxing the rear wheel and the petro solvents used in the wax remove any lube with ease whilst waxing and protecting the rim!
      Thanks very much for watching nice to hear from you again.

      Just put a piece of wet kitchen roll over the area and leave it for 5 to 10 minutes. it will rehydrate the bugs and they should then just wash off with ease! work well with helmet visors too!

    Years ago I used a product called Honda Bike Brite one time on a motorcycle. Many people swore by this product. It also was a spray on , let set a few mins and rinse thoroughly. I followed the instructions to the letter. Much to my disappointment all the black engine cases, swing arm etc. came out with a dull finish. Ever since that episode I've been very hesitant to use any of these spay and rinse type products, S100 etc. I like what you demonstrated with the Muck Off product but I need some reassurance I will not experience the same problems as I did with the Honda product .

      Interesting comment. I tried the muc off method on my new Thruxton R and my old Honda XL250. The results on both were consistent; the bright alloy casings and wheels as well as the black painted metal both went milky white. I followed the instructions in that I washed off the cleaner within the specified times. I am, as you can imagine, very disappointed and now face quite a lot of work in order to retrieve the situation

    Nice video, I always use Kent extra large drying towels for soaking up the excess water. Have you tried a hot air blower to get the bike fully dry? I purchased a pet dryer unit for around £50, which does an excellent job of blasting the water from all the nooks and crannies on the bike.

    • @stuartfillingham

    • @michaeljohnson-li5nn
      @michaeljohnson-li5nn Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, please give one a try they are a nice piece of kit.
      You can by the motorcycle specific version of the dryer but to me they are identical to the Pet Dryer version and always seem to cost more.
      Please be careful when you first try out the dryer. I first tried my new dryer out in the kitchen.
      Big mistake, the airblast was so powerful that the hose unit flew out of my hand and the blast of air blew over one of the wife's ornaments that she displays on the kitchen shelf.
      Luckily she was out at the time and I managed to repair it and place it back in exactly the same spot. She will (of course) eventually find out about this little mishap and I will be in BIG trouble!

    Do you do this procedure just when you think the bike is dirty or after each or so many rides? I think I remember you recommended a Castrol product for people in the US in place of GX85 but I can't remember the soecific one. I'll have to try locating it again.
    I'll have to check the manuals for any electronics, parts Triumph recommends covering while cleaning the bike.
