    I have one big problem with this kind of comparison - you never mentioned the biggest advantage of the Pi, which is low power consumption.

    • @Paul_______
      @Paul_______ Před 4 měsíci +3

      This is it. 5v 3a runs my pi and 7in elecrow display. screen uses 5v 0.74a and pi uses 5v 1.8a. A phone charger or the outlet in my vehicle will provide enough power. I also made a solar battery pack so I have games during hurricane season. Battery holds 32hrs of charge and the small solar panel will 100% the battery in 2hrs

      or heat but yeah in my case I'm willing to sacrifice some extra heat and power consumption for a lot more performance. it seems arm (linux) isn't quite at the level I was hoping. I'm looking forward to a future where we have an equivalent to the M1-M4 on linux (with the software to match)

      If you go the n100 route the thing has 6W TDP. The older refurbished will draw more power...
      But a pi 5 at 5V with 1.8A...I doubt it, unless you are doing some not so demanding tasks (or no fan and pretty hefty thermal throttling!) - there is a reason pi 5 should be run with the 27W power supply.
      Tasu... maybe you should learn what a processor architecture is and what an operating system. ARM is not Linux...let me tell you a little secret Apple M Chips are ARM AND Mac OS is a unix based OS, just like...Linux.

      When i can get a Pi5 with a case and for 50 bucks ill pick one up, as will you. No big deal. The Pi4 was the holy grail of video games when it came out, i didn't need anything else to be honest. And now we have FPGA, which is what im most excited about going forward.

    I bought a Raspberry Pi 3B+ branded as a retro gaming system preloaded with more than "23,000" (claimed lol) games on a micro sd card back in 2017 and I had no regrets buying it for $99. But then about 2yrs ago, I came across a couple of CZcams videos showing emulation on a mini pc that was playing PS3 games, so I bought one last year and let me tell you, it's the only way to go for retro gaming! It can play all the games the Raspberry Pi can and more, I mean come on, I'm playing PS3 games on it and that is NOT something you can do on a Pi lol!👍

    I've always been a bit skeptical buying used/refurbished or even new (with these new-ish companies) mini-pcs. Mostly paranoid about them coming with viruses and/or spyware. The recent news about spyware for the AceMagic mini-pcs frankly isn't helping. The pi is fully open source, no bios, no storage, so it seems less risky. Also, if you are patient and live near a distributor such as microcenter, you can pick up a pi at MSRP.

    Great video, very informative and well explained. We have reached a point in retro emulation where (almost) everything can be run quite well if you have hardware that's good enough. Any computer that struggles with N64/psp games (PI4), or even Wii ones (PI5), should be discarded and never considered as a retrogaming platform. Expecially if its cost goes into Mini Pc territory.

    I think it's relative choice. Pi or other systems better bang for buck. Pi and other arm sbc simplicity and small and not as much grunt. I run both setups. Pc has more components to fail vs my pi setups. Just write sd card and chuck it in and I'm done... nothing else to do or worry about. For Implicitly and limited power I go pi, but for bang for buck I go Pc. I been emulation since late 1980s , so I'm no stranger to this stuff so to speak. Sbc systems are overrated but they have there place. What I hate is all the people giving credit to clowns who release images of emulators and roms with scraped videos and box art. WTF. Did these people write the emulators? Did these people write the gui / front end? Did these people rip the roms fro. Real hardware ? Etc etc.
    Oh wait they downloaded some roms or got a hd off someone who has collected for 30 years or more.
    Then here comes the hard work...... select do you want to scrap data for roms . Phew hard work, I wish I had that skill level.

(Like all customisations) If you still want that SBC fun/hobby board, look at the X1 $99 USD OR The Radxa X2L SBC @ $42 USD (despite the benchmarks) BOTH way outperform Pi5 for Retro gaming and being X86 run windows 10/11/Retrobat/Batocera or Linux build easily.

  • @sociallyresponsiblexenomor7608

    Everything you've shown me, cost 2 - 3 times as much as a pi5 does in Canada. A full desktop is also way too large for the project I am working on atm also.

I have absolutely nothing against the raspberry pi's I just think for those looking to get something today I'd go a different direction but for those that got them at the great price points in the past they certainly work great for the retro stuff. My wall mounted cabinet plays everything up to some n64 Dreamcast and psp though I don't usually play those on there. Mario kart 64 I will say can be a blast on an arcade setup though.

    If you're buying a Pi as an SBC mini PC, you're in it for the wrong reason. There are way better options out there for not that much more money once you equip out a Raspberry Pi.
    The EM680 can be had for $400 with a 512GB NVMe SSD and 32GB of LPDDR5 6400MT RAM which will run circles around the Pi 5, any mini/micro SFF office PC, or SBC on the market all while consuming as little as about 20-25W if you lower the package TDP. Icing on the cake is the EM680 has a smaller footprint than a Raspberry Pi and is about the same thickness as the average Raspberry Pi feature case(barebones cases like the official one are slightly thinner)

    I went backwards; I saw an ad for the Pironman 5 case on Facebook and I was like "omg tiny tower case" so I built a Pi 5 around one, for no specific reason other than curiosity. For anyone who's done console emulation on any PC even semi-modern, it would blow this thing away. Going from Dreamcast silky fluid in 4K on a gaming rig to "keep it near native" VGA on this thing.. ugh. The NUC-likes are a substantially better option.

    Honestly for the Pi5, I would be getting 256GB SD card minimum, probably even 512. Wii and PS2 games are all 5GB a piece. 128GB will basically only get you 20 games or so from those consoles when you consider the space needed for the install and that gives you no room for Dreamcast, Saturn and PS1 games which (while not as big) will still take up 10+ GB each for a decent library.

    I say no now as well. I wanted Pi4 with POE hats for my homelab setups. What I found out is Rpi burn through their SD cards quick. I had 3D printed a 2U 12pi for low power. Upgraded my switch to accomdate this and at the end the lockdowns happened and supply chain issues and scalping. What was avail? X86. I priced out 12 pi with POE hats and SD cards and it costed the same as having a 2U Ryzen 5 5600 64GB ECC and 6TBx2 Raid hard drives with Dual NIC for the same price and I host containers/virtual machines on it.
    For gaming I started to use my left over pis and given them away as gifts but the small pcs are power efficient with more bit of horsepower than PI.

    Form factor and power supply counts for something though. I can build a slim portable control board with the PI 5 inside it that just has an HDMI output and a plug and it won't weigh much of anything. Not that you are wrong on this performance / value proposition though that's clear. The PI5's prices have dropped and its in stock now but its still expensive for what it is.

    You cant do Wii U on integrated graphics from a cpu from 2015, maybe some of the virtual e-shop titles can load if you are lucky.
    Gamecube games can run but you are running a very low power cpu thats equivalent to a low Haswell cpu so gamecube isnt going to do as well as you may think.
    Dreamcast runs smoothly on a Pi 4 with 1gb of ram, so this $130 computer is only good for the things that the raspberry pi 4 and 5 can do and it sips more power. At that point, thats a major L.

    I kind of get the argument. I just like fooling around with Pis - to see what they get a low-powered, singleboard-pc to do. If I need power, I'd probably just run stuff on my 7800x3D/4090-pc - but yeah, if you don't care about power-usage and a fixed eco-system with a specific, console-like performance-profile, then by all means x86-mini-pcs is the way to go. And yes - the RPI5-price does not really make sense compared to X86 on a dollar per performance-basis anymore. I am sure RPI will feel this. Does not seem to be that much hype concerning RPI anymore. Maybe it had its days. I still find them fun though.

    That beelink s12 had a $20 instant coupon that you missed which would bring the price closer to $180... considering it comes with 16gb of ram and a 500gb ssd it definitely would have been worth it, moreso than any pi5...
    With intel and amd coming out with new more powerful chips it pushes all their previous chips down in price and implemented into these handhelds and mini PCs....
    Raspberry pi's will have a tough time competing unless they can manage to come out with capable chips at a much lower price like they did with all their previous pi's up to the pi4....
    maybe if they manage to come out with a pi6 or pi7 with 16gb and 500gb ssd for $50 then they might have a chance at surviving, but i doubt they will at this point.

      I'm not sure what you mean by does not require a separate pc? You take a mini pc and connect a micro sd card, ssd, hard drive, or flash drive to it to bring your games into it. Same deal with a pi 4 or 5 where you'd be essentially doing the same thing.

    They can combine all the methods of checking for extra purchases, credit card number, ip, name, address, email. It would help but just cant stop scalpers. Of course if people wasnt paying scalper prices like you show in this video they would stop scalping. Pc emulation has always been more powerful and cheaper than all alternatives this is nothing new. If you been into emulation for any amount of time someone will have told you just get a old used pc.

    2005 has called and want's it's 'clock frequency' equals 'processing power' analogy back. Especially a comparsion with different Processor architectures is hilarious.
    But - to be honest - the man is right, you get more bang for your buck buying refurbished office/mini PCs. Or you get i a little less bang and buy new ones with up to date processors (N95, N100 etc.) and have 'bout an equal amount of power consumption than a rp5 with more processing power (but possible less than the refurbished PC - but they draw much more power). So, not as easy as it seems...

    I'd still say wait until you can get the pi5 at retail. Looking into these $200 mini PC's they can't emulate as good as the Pi 5. I think the problem is even though they have a faster cpu and more ram, they run on windows which takes up much more resources

      What are you smoking mini PC blow them out the water you noob

    • @dreadlord9257
      @dreadlord9257 Před 6 měsíci

      @@cohenguest-nq1wf Depends what you are talking about. The $100-$150 mini pcs are usually n100s which really are not that much faster. They are faster, but not "blow out of the water" fast. Now, mini pcs can scale all the way up to the highest end laptop cpu/gpus, so sure, but then you aren't even remotely in the same budget class.
      The used SFF based builds are just awkward comparisons. They are much larger than an rpi, so you may as well just be comparing it to a used laptop too.
      Then there is just a matter of a use-case. If you truly intend to do nothing other than emulation, then sure. However with the gpio pins, you can re-use your pi for a lot more by just swapping out the sd card.
      The suggestion still stands though - wait until you can get an rpi at msrp. Scalper prices are not worth, especially when its practically a 25% markup.

  • @tinyrick998
    @tinyrick998 Před 6 měsíci +1

    I mean your price comparison is only fair if you are going to buy everything from Amazon at scalped prices. If you buy from a Certified reseller they cost 80 for the best model. the case and fan you chose are also unnecessarily expensive. you can buy much cheaper cases just as good looking for like 12 dollars. Not to mention if your into retro gaming and building your own emulation station chances are you know someone with a 3d printer or have access to a forum full of people who probably do. And let me tell ya those 3d printer guys are chomping at the bit for things to make and would love to make you one for very little or even free.
    at the price point you still cant beat the pi if you are willing to be patient, buy from approved resellers, and look for good deals on cases or simply go without. I hit mine with conformal coating and don't use a case at all. My can of that stuff cost as much as a case, I like the look and ive coated my 4 pi 3s and my 2 5s and it still feels 3/4 full.
    Sure if you want the best emulation station possible MINI PC's are getting really fast but if the argument is spend 50-70 bucks more for a 220 dollar mini PC then why not spend 80 bucks more and get a Walmart laptop? then you get the addition of a built in screen, battery etc. just put emulators on that and plug it into the TV. the point of the PI is its great for emulation AND the cheapest out there by a solid 30-40% margin if you avoid scalpers.
