QT#90 - Adding a Budget vs Actual Variance Value to a Power BI Clustered Column Chart

- In this video, you'll learn how to incorporate a budget versus actual maintenance cost variance value into a time series clustered column chart in Power BI.
By explicitly showing the variance between the cost and the actual, you'll be able to quickly see the difference.
Normally you'd have to ...
... look at the budget
... then look at the actual values
... and then internally calculate the difference in your head (not always easy!)
That process takes time and more importantly 'cognitive load' making it a little bit harder and more effort to interpret the data.
Displaying the difference explicitly will speed up and simplify your charts and make it far simpler for the person reading the chart to interpret the data.
That's not all! To further improve the ease and speed of perception I'll then add an up-down arrow and some colour conditional formatting to the budget vs actual maintenance cost variance label. This will really make it really stand out in months when the cost is over the budget.
I've used budget vs actual cost, but this approach can be used whenever you are displaying multiple columns on a clustered column chart in Power BI.
Another couple of good use cases for this, from a maintenance work management point of view would be:
1.) Schedule attainment in a week - show the number of work order schedule vas the number completed. The variance will show the number not completed.
2.) Preventative Maintenance Compliance - show the number of PM work orders due for completion in the month vs the number actually completed in the month as columns, then use the variance label to show the number not completed.

I really love the video . U are the only one show proper step by step for this tutorial
🎉🎉🎉appreciate your kind words
Came across your video just when I needed it. Thank you very much. A request came in from a stakeholder and with your video, they won't be disappointed! Thanks again.
Great stuff, it feels good to be able to help Batman!
I love finding such simple yet powerful tricks. Thank you very much for sharing this with us, incredible useful!!
Glad you found it useful, I'm using it loads now too.👍
Thanks for upload. I'll defo be including that in my template
I know it's a great bit of functionality, I love it.
Thanks again. got it to work. had to switch power bi back to the old visual
Great stuff, I'm sure that'll get fixed in the next few releases.
This is such a great video thank you so much :)
Million thanks .. I learned a lot of your uploads.. God bless you
Thanks Mohamed, it's a great bit of functionality from the power bi team isn't it 😀
@@jasondavidsondata You're welcome! Yes, it definitely is. The Power BI team has done a fantastic job with this new functionality.
Thanks for your reply. the dynamic feature only works on the old view now the new one
Great video, is there way to put the two the cost measures so that they overlap to give the effect of a bullet chart?
Thanks! 🙏
Thank you for the video. Can't find the link to the characters kindly?
Love your videos!! I am struggling with this one (though it seems so simple on the surface). Do you have a link to the PBIX or DAX somewhere I can reference, I cant seem to find it in your index
Hi Jason, I'll need to catchup publishing the pbix files for the videos. I'll get this one posted in the next couple of days though.
Cheers
Jason

Thank you so much sir! You are a PBI god!
Great work !! Which version of powerbi you have used ?
Hi, I'm not sure. My power bi desktop updates each month automatically would have been the latest version at that time.
@@jasondavidsondata i tried with current version of Powerbi Desktop but Line-Y Asis is only avaliable under Line and clusterd column chart and it does not support text value [ above eample ] at Line-Y Asis only supports number .
conditional fomatting on labels doesnt seem to work?
I am using the updated power bi layout so I am not sure how you did the format
thanks for the video, I am unable to change the format to Dynamic. (Maybe because I am using a %)
Hi, it's a preview feature, so you need to switch it on in the options menu. That should then let you do it.
