The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

I saw Ginger perform Hello Dolly so long ago, what an inspiration it was. I also it with Carol Channing, Martha Raye and Pearl Bailey
So lucky!!
... Me too !!!!!!!... I was 21 when I saw Ginger... ... Out side.. I kiddingly asked her if I could dance with her... For 10 seconds WE DID DANCE !!! OMG !!
... But Pearl Bailey was the BEST OF THEM ALL !!!!!!!
Legendary ❤
Wow
Thanks for an excellent number by Ginger Rodger’s and cast in color. I wish they had variety shows to showcase Broadway shows again, besides movies.
Have a great day!
That was one of my favorite things about Rosie O'Donnell's show. I loved when she featured Broadway shows.
I saw Ginger perform Dolly on tour at the Shubert Theater in Cincinnati. During the title song, she was kicking higher than the chorus boys who were half her age or less!
Ginger Rogers appeared twice on the Sullivan show. This was her second appearance. As others have noted, this song is from "Hello Dolly" and you can also watch Pearl Bailey perform this production number from a different episode on this channel.
I miss her so much. ❤
Yes, you do.
Ginger or Pearl?
So great to see the original Champion staging.
Sweet Ginger Rogers.
A Great Star of the Hollywood great years.Ginger could do so many things,a truly great star.
The dancing horse is cracking me up
Yes! It’s a running gag throughout the original staging.
Wow very nice!!!!!!
Great Broadway song from HELLO DOLLY!
In that wig she looked like Eve Arden to me. RIP sweet lady.
Arden toured as Dolly in 1st National Company.
I saw Arden as Dolly in the first touring company. I also saw Carol Channing on Broadway, Pearl Bailey on Broadway, and Dora Bryan [Mrs. Cratchit in the 1948 film 'A Christmas Carol] in the West End in London.
@@user-gt7xs1fc6gBlimey, Dora Bryan, she was a real trouper.
Ooohh they have the beer kegs!!! I held one when I was in Hello Dolly in high school! 😊
Inspiring!!!
My parents saw Ginger Rogers in "Hello, Dolly!"
*Rogers
Mine did too. At the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in LA.
Wonderfully exhilarating!
Great production. Needed a bigger stage. 🙂
It was on the smaller stage used for the Ed Sullivan Show. Where the CBS Late Show is taped now.
That is entertainment.
Ginger played Mame in London when it transferred from Broadway in all accounts she was quite good
What a treat!! I love Ginger Rogers! One of my most favorite classic movies actresses! I don't know what musical this is from, but her acting at the start was very moving, and the song was wonderful!🎉😊💜
"HELLO DOLLY"
@@MrQbenDanny Thanks! I haven't seen it in decades.
@@StephanieJeanne yes! After the original Dolly, Carol Channing left to go on tour with the show, they needed a big starter to replace her, so enter Ms. Rogers!
That's Pat Finley as Irene Malloy ... she played Bob Hartley's annoying sister Ellen on The Bob Newhart Show
Wasn't she also Twink on The Mary Tyler Show?
She should have been cast in the film version and have Fred Astaire as Horace. It’s a shame the studio didn’t go for that reunion opportunity.
Oh God no. Streisand took it to a whole new level. It was less schmaltzy.
@@Scorchy666 Streisand was a miscast and too young for the part. Even she admitted that. And pairing her with Walter Matthau, what an odd choice. A Rogers/Astaire casting would have been far more endearing to watch.
Ooh- that would have been amazing! I don’t know that I can see Fred Astaire in that role, but it would have been fun to watch.
@@Scorchy666 Agreed. Astaire would have been horribly cast as Horace…he wasn’t much of an actor…and Rogers didn’t have the singing (or acting, if we’re honest) chops for Dolly.
People would only have wanted to see the 2 of them dance together. Not enough dancing in either role. Streisand and Matthau, however miscast, were currently bankable stars at the time.
After seeing Carol Channing in the original production in 1964, this seems lifeless
I never saw Channing but can believe that she was excellent. totally;lly agree that this is lifeless.
Brilliant & a Great Star in her own right. As she proved in her London Palladium Show ‘ Just Me ‘ 1976 - Breathtaking! All her best Ginger & Fred Numbers- complete with beautiful costume changes - All the big routines, with huge Top Hat &!Tales Male Chorus lines - a stall at front - Even the over the tables routine Swing Time . Then she would every now & then , after a number come to front a beautiful negligée , with the gold feather broach on “ Feathers 🪶 I hate Feathers “ . “ I was quite right “ -, and continue her life story - FIT - just normal calm , that lovely bubbly voice - Did Pig Latin - Erway ina the unyma and talked about her clowning with Warren & Dublin and Buzz . Her Mother & no nonsense with any male. Fred & his wife- so jealous- not allowed to kiss . Another glamorous change, routine & back again , a wonder - Love her instrumental “ Any Yam today “ . Has to be right one - Biased- she is a relative. - my mum & grandpop used to speak in pig Latin, about family in same room! I caught on young, hysterical. We were part of first family to go over to America & survive and thrive Deep affection for “ Old Country “ . So Kathrine Hepburn- Cousin Ginger Rogers & other cousin Lucille Ball & between them they stitched RKO up a plenty - GO GIRL-Power & MGM - There you go am I proud of the Love & affection still shown - Oh a ps Katherine’s next door neighbours -?the rich Bennet Sisters - they didn’t need money , like Dolores del Rio , they did it just for fun . My Love & thanks to all you. David.
Wonderful! Were the cast members from the Broadway show?
Yes - had to be - union show.
My return
Did they consider Ginger Rogers and Betty Grable for the role of Dolly in the movie? They would have been just the right age.
I was gonna say, I love Barbra Streisand, but she was too young. I’m surprised that Gene Kelly didn’t consider Ginger for the movie role.
She was one of the replacements for Carol Channing.
I couldn't help but speculate how much better the movie version would have been with Ginger Rogers as Dolly. No disrespect to Barbra Streisand, but she really was too young at the time for the part.
that's a lot of hair
From Fred Astaire to a dancing horse. Such is life.
Via an Oscar and legendary fame.
the best Dolly was Streisand unsurpassed , She could sing and act..........
Well, Rogers wasn't really known for her singing...
Ten times better than miss Channing
nice try miss Rogers
