Fun fact; The last 4 digits in your personal number aren't exactly that secret, the first 2 are determined by what hospital you where born at. the 3rd digit is even if your juridical gender is female and odd if your juridical gender is male and the final digit is calculated depending on the previous 3 using the Luhn algorithm. Not sure if anyone else thought that was fun but I did =)

Yes you do get the pronunciation wrong. You are closer when you say it with out trying to do it in Swedish, if you just could drop the b in number from that it would be very close. It is OK to pronounce it as it was two words as long as they come close together person-nummer.

Getting a "personnummer" doesn't make one a medborgare. Just an official resident who can work, get bankID, swish, open bank accounts, etc. etc.

If you live in Malmö then there is one thing you can try that maby you havnt done in the US.

People can only get a work permit by having a job offer from a Swedish employer. And the Swedish employer must first advertise and consider applicants from the EU. Only then can they provide a job offer to a non-EU person, who can then apply for a work visa at the nearest Swedish embassy. The employer must also be accredited by the immigration agency and show that they have all systems and controls in place. Once you have that work permit, you are tied to that employer for a number of years. If you bring family with you, your spouse can also get a work permit, but that one isn't tied to a specific employer and clearly more flexible.

I don't think it will be hard for you to memorize your person number, you really just have to learn the 4 last numbers the rest is just you date of birth but in a different order then you as an american are use to I guess.:) Now you just need a swedish ID card and you are set.
You are really close to personnr, its almost like in english, If you say personnr anyone will understand if you overpronuance it, I dont think everybody will get it. So just go with the flow you are so cool :) . And one more thing, I would try to memorize the 4 "secreat nr" more then the others. Beacuse the otherone is just the year moth and day you were born.

Personnummer is kinda hard to pronounce for a non-scandinavian I guess :) The "rs" in person is like "sh" in fish or cash. So if I would try to type it out in "english speak" it would be something like "peshoo-nummer". Hope that helped and didn't make you more confused :)

Some trivia you may or may not know. The last digit in the personnummer is a checksum that you can calculate if you know the rest of the number. Second, the three other digits that aren't your birth date used to carry some information, I think the two first of them tell where your parents (or your mom I guess) were living at the time of your birth. I think this is no longer the case. And for people whose parents don't live in in Sweden I guess those two digits just say "not Sweden".
Prior to 1990 the first 2 of the last 4 digits indicated where in sweden you were born. So sure it could be same as where your parents/mom live, but could also differ.
In addition, the third number indicates if the person is male or female
The last is a check digit based on all prior numbers
@@nichin79 according to my personnummer I'm born in central Stockholm. But I'm not, I'm born in Kalmar because my mom had a summer job there when I was born. Also, none of my parents lived in Stockholm at the time, they were both living and studying in Uppsala. But my mom was registered as living with her parents in Stockholm. Thus it has to be where mom lived that determined it.

@@nichin79 it's probably just a corner case. Most people are born more or less where their parents live, and the parents are registered as living where they actually live. Students giving birth while on holiday is probably rare.
Also you're of course right about the third digit. Odd means male and even means female, right?

I cant emphasis enough to get a personnummer.. becuse its how we do things in Sweden!
A residence permit, is another thing, its about Visa rules, so one can get temporary residens permits, like student Visa, job Visa!
However, one can get a permanent residenship permit, whitout change ones citicenship.. if one have long time relations in sweden, kind of registrated at Skatteverket as living in sweden and doing ones duty, (at least pay some taxes) or the shortcut, having a partner in sweden!
Then after one have a residens permit and a personnummer, one shall get a swedish bank accounte, its your bank that provide you whit all the services you need to survive in sweden!

Job or student visa, for that period one have a job or studying.
For the last two, its almoste nesecary to altso register at skatteverket, (our tax agency) as living in sweden temporary!
There is no card, exept if one register at skatteverket, one can apply for a swedish ID card.
But one still have to leave, when ones visa experied, (job or studies)!
Kimberly, on the other hand applyes for a permanent resident permit, becuse she have a swedish partner, and I think that its a baby coming real soon.
However, shes still then an US citicen, with a residence permit in sweden without time limit!
The child that we hope for, get citicenship of there parents, and the easyest way is to register it on the fathers swedish citicensship at first. Later one can apply for US citicenship too!

Personnummer är inte hemligt då det är en offentlig handling. Många tror att de fyra sista siffrorna är avgörande men så är inte fallet. Älskar din positivitet och det är vad flest svenskar älskar med USA.

The personnummer is why Sweden has a lot age racism. Everyone will immediately see how old you are.
