A warning to all DIY'ers

- There is a big problem with DIY, one that is bigger than any of the common ones - like:
1) Underestimating the time and cost involved. Many DIY projects take longer and cost more than expected. It's important to carefully plan out the project and research the necessary materials and tools to avoid surprises.
2) Lack of skills or knowledge. Some projects require specialized skills or knowledge that the DIY enthusiast may not possess. It's important to know your limitations and be willing to ask for help or hire a professional if needed.
3) Improper safety precautions. DIY projects can involve dangerous tools and materials. It's important to take proper safety precautions and use protective gear to avoid injury.
4) Incorrect measurements or cuts. Precision is key in many DIY projects.
Incorrect measurements or cuts can result in wasted materials and a project that doesn't fit or function properly.
5) Not having the right tools. Using the wrong tools can damage materials and make the project more difficult. It's important to have the necessary tools or be willing to invest in them to ensure the project is completed successfully.
All of these challenges are important to take into consideration when doing a DIY project.
However, the problem I want to talk about is more serious and bigger than all of these!!!

Very good observation. I almost always get into side projects to support the main project. But, then again, I am retired and enjoy projects!
Glad to hear I am not alone 😊 You have a valid point there: If you're not in a hurry or don't feel bad not finishing the "main" project in the timeline you first envision, I guess this is not a problem at all 🤔
As someone with the same problem, my two tricks are to put a price to my time and to set the milestones to my calendar. the first one helps me decide if building something myself is worth my time, and the other, puts the time pressure element to the project that in turn will help me keep the focus. Obviously the milestones are not set in stone, because as we all know, a DIY project will always contain a number of unexpected tasks, or delays outside our control mostly due to family and work.

I totally agree. But don't forget there is a third option for stuff you seldom have use for, like a pipe bender. See if you can borrow or rent one.

So true. When you do something DIY, you tend to feel like you should actually be doing EVERYTHING yourself. Then you fall down the rabbit hole of DIY Jigs, Tools, Brackets, Fasteners, and sometimes solutions that are not required. The worst part is when you realise you are now looking for problems to fit the solution you invented that was a 1 use only. But you feel so connected to it, that you can't bring yourself to take it apart or re purpose the materials

I agree, I think it is way more satisfying to use tools and equipment I have built myself compared to the ones I have bought.
I could probably not call myself a DIY’er, but i know a thing or two about getting sidetracked or highly motivated when working on specific projects. That is all part of what makes this whole process so unique. You create new projects when working on some projects. I always get really motivated and inspired when working on stuff i like. So i don’t grade it as a problem, more as a privilege 👏🏻 Really great video. Love the new style and storytelling
Well put! This problem is definitely a "luxury problem" = not really a problem at all compared to other stuff going on in the world 😑 It's fun to try out different ways of video recording and storytelling, still learning and trying to improve for every video 😊
I could already imagine what the problem was going to be. In the end, we should learn to focus and use our limited time for those things we really want to do and not so much for those we could do.

I think many (especially CZcams) DIYers have the opposite problem.
I love watching them using $10,000 of Festools specialized tools in a dedicated workshop, that probably costs thousands a month to rent, to produce a coffee table or whatever that will probably sell for $150. And then I spend the rest of the day wandering around the house muttering "Why....?". My wife thinks I'm crazy.

Full disclosure: I am retired. I fully understand what you present here, but it is not a problem for me, it is a privilege. When I am sidetracked, I celebrate that I have the tools and the gumption to try stuff. The failures are welcome, the outcomes are not time-dependent, and the very best part of any day is being in my shop. There will be a time when I age out of working with my hands this way, so now it's Power On, Carpe Diem!

I’m not good at it, but timeboxing side projects so the impact they have is contained. Did you really need to paint those parts. If it’s within the time budget you’ve given yourself that’s fine. If not then they don’t get painted. If you run out of time that’s a moment when you get to re-evaluate if you buy or build
That was very smart 👍 It avoids the side project to consume too much time. I am using agile methods in my regular job as a system developer, perhaps I should transfer some of these principles to my garage, like timeboxing 🤔
i always have to weigh-out storage.. if it's something that i use once in a great while.. i need it smaller. if i use it frequently then a chinese thing may be fine and i modify it to do extra things to make it handier or better.
Makes sense, it's the same for me. Limited storage capacity is a well known issue 🥴
I feel your pain, i am the same, i spend more time preparing a project than actually completing it, but it is only because i want it to do it right, i look at it as the same as Chinese cooking, its all in the preparation.

Okay, sounds like you have a bit more work on the engine than I have. I just need to fix my carbs, they are currently on my bench. I just received repair kit for them, just need to decide if I want to rebuild the seat hoop first... 🙄🤔

i see you as a craftsman, not some diy. to me it's the journey and the reward of giving birth to something so i welcome side projects. the front stand is pure genius. i have to restore an old 125 honda and, hope you don't mind, take inspiration from it. take care
The second front stand worked very well, and it is easy to tuck away when not in use. Feel free to copy the design ☺️
to many ideas with to less time ;) to be efficient in the project’s is a must for those who have rise there income for daily live, for us it’s the enjoy of doing and finishing a project it does not matter whether it’s „only“ a side project or not … the worst thing what could happen to us is to have time and don‘t have any ideas left ;)

Ahh, that just sounds like me 😋 I'll better check if anyone close to me have a pipe bender i can borrow, they are quite expensive.
Du skulle bare solgt sykkelen så du fikk konsentrert deg om å bygge utstyr til sykkelen istedenfor. :-)
Jeg er skamløs til å kjøpe eller låne det jeg trenger for å gjøre det jeg planlegger - istedenfor å spore av med å bygge alt fra sveiseapparat til dreiebenk. Crappy 'tema rørbøyer kommer du ut til Eidskrem og låner for den vesle perioden du trenger den.

Takk for tilbudet, men usikker på om det fungerer for å få en jevn 180 graders bøy på ca 25cm i diameter for 25mm rør? Blir ikke røret klemt litt flatt på disse?
@@kihestad Ja den kan deformere røret litt. Jeg pakket rørene hardt med sand og sveiset igjen endene for å minimere det så godt som mulig.
@@kihestad Når jeg tenker etter blir 180grader en "utfordring" å få til også på den med så smal diameter. Så du må nok bare lage din egen rørbøyer altså 🙂
