In this weeks video, Dino from the HackaweekTV youtube channel sends us a set of old used rubber airbox velocity stacks off his Honda in for renewal. The parts are over 40 years old and hard as a rock. I demonstrate proper methods in softening old hard rubber motorcycle parts so they may become usable again. ( will of course not fix cracked or crumbling rubber )
If you don't have all of the secret ingredients available where you live, you can just soak your rubber parts in a 50/50 mix of pure wintergreen oil and isopropyl alcohol for 36 hours+ .
Please visit Dino's links below and tell him Ichiban Moto sent you !

If you don't fancy following Ichibans precise & concise System - just chuck your rubber bits into some ATF.
ATF contains loads of "We Love Rubber!" Stuff because your average automatic gerabox is packed full of seals - so they invented a fluid that makes seals stay sealing.
15 minutes soaking in ATF is the "Answer" for those who clicked in really expecting a "How to" & left feeling like their nads had just been tickled..

I used to do the same on my old KZ rubbers but without the need for all those weird chemicals or hot water. Just soak em overnight in cellulose thinners. (Gunwash in UK) soak overnight, let them dry out (as they will have swollen bigger than orig) for 6 hours, job done, like new rubbers. Try it!

+Ichiban Moto Konichiwa Ichiban Moto San! As an industrial engineer, I must advise you that in order to reach the working temperature where you can manipulate the properties of the material (above the Eutectic Point)in a faster and more efficient way, you MUST add 5 drops of miso. In case you can't get Miso, you can always use sake but it MUST be of the Junmai-shu type, otherwise you will achieve a plastic deformation instead of an elastic deformation.

You can use a fine polish, like plastX to bring that surface up to par.
    1. What is the brand of the rubber rejuvinator? I went so far as to image search rubber rejuvinator products and couldn't find that bottle. Is it just Fedron?
    2. What did you squirt in from the hypo needle?
    3. How many hot sauce drops (Mikuni stuff)?
    4. How much "hot sauce"?
    5. How long does this treatment typically last? I would like to get at least a year of softening out of the process if possible. Do you know? I suspect my application is MUCH less demanding than yours, now tremendous heating, no monster tension (stretching) stresses.
If you (or someone else that has done this and knows) would take the time to answer my question, I would be glad to put another comment describing if, and how well it worked. Thx, and thx for taking the time to share this via the video. Current "restorers" use stuff like brake fluid, which to me doesn't sound like that great an idea, although the rubber parts in a brake system don't seem to deteriorate soaked in it. Still....
I am going to try this on a very old typewriter platen, as re-rubbering them is rather expensive (about $100), and a pretty long turn around time, both of which I'd like to avoid if I can. Obviously the "treatment" will not be able to penetrate both sides of a thin rubber part, as it does with your part geometry here, but I don't think that's an issue, as I really just need the outer 1/8"-3/16" to soften to make the necessary difference (not ripping through typewriter ribbons and paper, and not sounding like a woodpecker on steroids tapping on a plastic tree.

You know, and I'm sure everyone remembers, Barry Sheene met and married Stephanie McLean, the 1971 Penthouse Pet of the Year. I didn't see her there this year but was hoping to meet the Stunning Wanda "Jelly Fingers" Welch. What a Sweetheart and was the February 1978 Teazer of the Month in Screw Magazine. After I get done with Physical Therapy I wouldn't mind Calling First for Sloppy Seconds with her. Anyway, when truing the rear wheel I found that the tire tube was punctured in several locations. I'm hoping that the crew at Itchy Bonn Moto can work some of their Chemistry Wizardry on the tube, with the annealing and rejuvenating process, and get my bike back on the track next spring. If Itchy can get the tube soft and supple again, something similar to what I can only imagine Mrs. Jelly Fingers has on the other side of that string bikini, then I can apply another set of patches over the other many patch repairs. Also, a little secret, I dust the tube with Nickel Town Customs Synthetic Baby Powder to minimize scuffing and oxidation. Thanks to my good friends at Itchy Bonn Moto. I'm hoping to get a few Stickers out of the deal too. And, please turn the tube repair around quickly and bill me to my home address in Winnetka. Thanks Itchy.

does this process slightly enlarge them? I have an old o ring in a carb that doesnt fit snugly anymore, in rehydrating them will they expand?

Would this work to restore a harmonic damper? The rubber already has a few cracks and is dry and hard but otherwise intact.

Actually I use Mothers Back to Black. Restoring plastic or rubber, soak in Mothers till soft. I would do it the Ichiban Moto way but the dog chewed up my last spork the other day and I'm afraid to just guess at the measurements. Great video :)
