Why Were The Nazis So Well-Dressed?

  • Smartly pressed and immaculately presented, the Nazis loved their uniforms. For the Nazi mindset, the uniform demonstrated discipline and status and was used as part of the propaganda effort to give their dream of a new, super-Germany a sense of fashion and style. Some embraced this more than others with perhaps the most notable connoisseur of fine clothing being Hermann Goering, the head of the Luftwaffe who was known to have specially tailored, flamboyant uniforms made for himself, but fashion played more of a role in Nazi culture than one might first believe. In this episode we are going to explore the importance and some of the history behind the Nazi obsession with uniforms. Welcome to Wars of the World.

      There was no such things like "officer's uniform" it was either modified enlisted men's uniform, or custom tailored. There is some weird missconception that SS offciers wore black uniforms... which is bullshit... or that Hugo Boss designed them which... is bullshit. Waffen SS uniforms were, from the begging of the war, made poorly, as they were sewn in concentration camps and party factories, which used slave labour. In 1944 Germany began production of uniforms which only had 20% wool...
      PS. Look at finnish, hungarian, polish officers, this is the shit.

Back in the day, in another century, HRH Richard The Nixon allowed his inmost tyrant-self to manifest in the beautiful Ruritanian Uniforms of His presidential praetorian guard, and then the spoilsports in the press and the democratic majority of Americans complained about Nixon's Id acting in public.

    The Swastika is a cultural and religious symbol which belongs to the Indoeuropean populations. As an Historian and Archaeologist I can teach you that this symbol Is found in all Indoeuropean cultures: among the Hittites, you can find A LOT of Swastikas in the Greek pottery, even the most famous artistic Greek decoration, the Meander, Is a demi-swastika actually. You can still see a lot of Swastikas in Roman mosaics and Basilicas, and it was used as an ornament on the Roman tunics at the beginning of the Christian Era. The Swastika is well documented in the Celtic jewllery both continental and insular (Britain). This symbol was also wide spread among Germanic, Baltic and Slavic populations, and, finally, among the Aryans who invaded the Iranian plateau and Northern India. The meaning of the Swastika and its sister symbol, the Triscele, is the representation of the eternal Cycle of Time and Seasons: birth-life-death-rebirth; spring-summer-fall-winter.
    The National Socialist Party adopted it when they came in contact with some exoterical sects, notably the Thesophic and the Ariosophic societies, composed by fremasons, orientalist scholars and archaeologists.
    To say, like in this video, that the symbol was borrowed by Far Asian civilizations is a Great absurdity, since it happened exactly the opposite. The spreading of Induism and, more important, of Buddhism (both religious beliefs originated in the Aryan India) in Eastern Asia made possibile for not Indoeuropean nations like the Chinese, the Koreans, Japan and even the Mongols to adopt this religious symbol.
    The National Socialists adopted the Swastika as their main symbol just because it is typical of all Indoeuropean peoples, the so called "Aryan" race.
    Next time, before making video like this and spreading misinformation in a society already plagued by a lot of ignorance, I do suggest studying a lot and read some Real books.

      Regarding National Socialism I reccomend in particular the volumes published under Time-Warner licence between the late 80s and early 90s, belonging to the series "The Third Reich"; notably the books written by George H. Stein, Charles Von Luttichau and Williamson Murray.
      About Theosophy and Ariosophy societies it's still possible to find some info in the Internet jungle but I suggest to avoid Wikipedia altogether.
      Finally it's possible to find on the internet good quality photos with reference about the utilization of the Swastika by Ancient Indoeuropean populations: just search pictures for "Hittites Swastika Standard", Greek pottery Swastika" and "Piazza Armerina mosaics" just to mention a few examples.

    One more thing to mention, alright we are discussing 1938-40's , this was a time in history where men and wemon actually had these things called self respect and a good healthy self image, now a days sadly if a man actually takes care of themselves and wears a set of dress shirts slacks and dress socks and dress shoes, on his Time off like men used to he's looked down upon by some people, back then you were actually complimented and even respected for caring about yourself enough to be well groomed and well dressed.

      @janboomstam1727 Před 4 měsíci

      I don't know if it was about self respect ... I think it had more to do that it was just not accepted by others, especially community.
      Being part of a community had a bigger grip on the individual. So if you looked bad it would look bad on the community. Therefore people took more care on their appearance, or they would be judged by the others in the community.

    • @Michael-fb1rl
      @Michael-fb1rl Před 4 měsíci

Hence the idea of discipline, if you are someone who chooses to be disciplined and well informed then having other aspects of yourself and your life is going to have a bit of a formal appearance.

Had A.H. not allow the British to escape Dunkirk, and had they been prepared for the Russian winter, both Churchill and Stalin are tossed in a dungeon and eventually executed as war criminals.

    As a longtime Waffen-SS reenactor (alongside many other impressions), I can confirm the problems with many events in recent years. In the reenacting community, there is generally a taboo against portraying the political aspects of the SS, but the actual military wing is considered fair game. However, there are hard limits. For example, you never, *ever* give the party salute, even if that would have been historically accurate (on pain of death) for the time and unit you're portraying.
    At the end of the day, we have to remember evil of the past so we recognize its like in the future. And for a reenactment battle... well, someone's got to be the bad guys. ;)
    (Yes, hanging out with a Waffen-SS reenactment unit is basically a neverending stream of "are we the baddies?" jokes.)

    • @jetty92487
      @jetty92487 Před 5 měsíci +22

      I too am a Waffen SS reenactor and there is definitely a stigma not so much within the reenacting community, but with segments of the public at large. I think this stems from most SS reenactors unwillingness or inability to answer tough questions in an intelligent and understanding way. If someone asks you, "Why do you do this?" or "Why reenact SS?", you can't just answer with because the uniforms are cool or something about someone needing to be the bad guy.
      This is something I have been working on within my unit. To have everyone able to speak intelligently on not only why they do it, but the seriousness that comes with portraying such a universally reviled organization. It's also important not to perpetuate "reenactorisms" like downplaying the role of the Waffen SS in atrocities or claiming there was a hard distinction between Waffen SS and the arguably far worse Totenkopfverbande. It's also important to not dismiss questions with "they were just soldiers" as that's not really accurate. Many of the foreign SS units were definitely less political, but at the end of the day, the SS, the Waffen SS included, was the political army of National Socialism. I personally believe you have to be able to explain that as an SS reenactor or you're doing a disservice to yourself, the hobby and meaningful historical discourse.
      I enjoy digging into the particular unit histories and the intricacies of uniform details as much as anyone, but that shouldn't be the extent of your knowledge, otherwise you're just a LARPer who's spent way too much money. I'd rather have 10 guys with ok uniforms who can really engage with people and explain how what we do humanizes those that we have turned into boogeymen and allows people to understand that there wasn't anything special about them that allowed them to commit evil, that it's within all of us to become monsters over one guy with a perfect kit who says things like, the uniforms are cool, or Waffen SS wasn't political.

    The last 3 minutes of this video… I’ll say this. Even tho history can be disgusting and repulsive, destroying the history or removing it from being publicly visible is dangerous. Without the constant reminder of the past it is likely it will be repeated. Life is not all roses and butterfly’s. So many innocent people have been slaughtered in world history it’s extremely sad. However, removing the history of these atrocities makes it more likely they will be repeated. We cannot just assume everyone knows about these histories even tho many adults alive today do know. Imagine 30 years from now what is possible if these future leaders have no idea what happened or don’t take it seriously? Absolute annihilation of human existence. We have the full capacity to make that happen if we are not extremely careful with who becomes leaders in the future. Don’t be scared, just be informed and stay informed. Work hard to correct these mistakes, do not ignore them.

    Its a bit inaccurate the swastica is called Hackenkreuz in German, the hack cross. This means that the already very important symbol of the cross was modified. For example, the empire had used the cross symbol a lot during first worldwar, making things like iron cross a emblem of honor. Also the cross was part of the war flak. The hack cross was nothing else the a modification and as such was easily removed with the original cross after the war. Nothing spiritual. The red color is also taken from the old flak and symbolist the people, like socialist did. The black and white was removed, because it where the colors of the monarchy and church. After all it was all very simple.

    The Germans & Prussians pushed a culture & heritage of a strong military tradition & excellence. It was woven into the fabric of their society. While other cultures venerated the wealthy, aristocrats, doctors & lawyers as the cream of society. Additionally, the Germans & Prussians like old European countries such as England & France the aristocracy were expected to become officers - they were inextricably linked which was a tradition started by the like of Julius Caesar & other Roman patricians. When you look at the English officers of the Revolutionary War, they weren’t usually “raised from the ranks” but were elites. Same with the Wehrmacht but it was also at another level. In the US Army part of the history we learn is that Baron von Steuben, an Austrian officer who George Washington recruiter is widely credited with helping the continental Army transform from rough militia into a professional army through drills & ceremony taken from the German & Austrian military. So the German tradition of military excellence went back a couple of centuries. When you couple the German military tradition with the German pursuit of engineering & design excellence it’s no wonder that it manifests into sharp aesthetics & innovative weaponry. The pinnacle of society was the soldier as they embodied bravery, discipline, courage & decorum.
    It’s a shame that it has all been washed away due to guilt over the wars because despite the atrocities & horrific acts there was a lot of good derived from their military tradition. That tradition is long gone & while the Germans have some excellent modern weapons & decent sized military they do not resemble the dynamic, innovative & groundbreaking German Army of the 20th Century who are largely responsible for today’s tactics, weaponry & order of battle of today’s modern battlefield.

    The WWII German M-35 Stahlhelm is the most iconic helmet design in history. I have an exact reproduction, without any Nazi symbol decals on it. Look at Darth Vader's helmet, and especially Kylo Ren's helmet. I have replicas of both of those helmets as well. Both are very obviously based on the look and design of the original M-35s, M-40s and M-45s. Those black leather trenchcoats as well, they just look cool as Hell. I'm certainly NOT a fan of Nazi Germany and what they stood for, or the horrible things they did, but it's hard deny or pretend that they didn't have sharp looking uniforms, hats, helmets, accessories, etc. Of course it's all subjective, but I mean, I do have funcioning eyeballs. -

    It was time of high style in fashion for both military and civilians. No other period can compare to the attention common people paid to their public appearance. The Germans were just one society among the many. They cut their uniorms in the Prussian military tradition, as did many other countries. The French did not, and patterned their tunics more like a business suit, as did the Americans - except for the US navy and Marine Corps.

    Ok, if I critized when I didn't like it, I must congratulate when I like it. A very curious (in a good way) topic, top quality as always and a much better tone of the voice!

    An interesting and informative video. I always found the early generations after the war who regarded their parents as old and out of touch rather disgusting, they owed them their freedom and didn't know or appreciate what sacrifices were made for them.

      The Baby Boomers were the most spoiled and ungrateful generation in the history of the human race. I’m a Boomer, btw. 😮

      @@valerietaylor9615 yes, my brother in law is one. He was almost bragging about his latest triple-lock pay award the other day (in addition to a generous civil service pension from 55) only to reveal that he never puts the proper amount in an honesty box and wears crudely sewen up jumpers. An awkward silence ensued when incredulous I actually asked if he was bring serious.

    Germans call it a Hackenkreutz (bent cross), not a Swastika.
    The term Nazi is part of the German way of shortening longer titles. The Anglophone world did not come up with that term. This is seen as they used the same method for Gestapo (Geheime Statz Polizei) or Kripo (Kriminal Polizei) or the later on Stazi (Statz Polizei) Nazi is just shorthand for NAtzional soZIalist. It was informal use and probably irreverent to a degree. They short handed a lot of words. Another notable one we still use is FLAK. (Flugzeug Abwehr Kannonen or anti aircraft artillery) for the 88mm shells they would fire at bombers that would explode into shrapnel at a set altitude.

      The full name of the Nazi party ( in German) was “Nazionalsozialistischedeutschearbeiterpartei” ( National Socialist German Worker’s Party). “Nazi”, for short. At first, it was called the German Worker’s Party ( Deutschearbeiterpartei). The National Socialist part was added later.

      Btw, it’s “ Geheimestaatspolizei”, and “Stasi”. The letter “s” between vowels is voiced in German ( i.e. it’s pronounced like “z”.)
