Amber Alert & Flying Doesn't Mix

- I had to leave Jaime and the kids at Wisconsin Dells and fly back to Chicago Aurora for a quick meeting. On the flight back an Amber Alert came across my phone that was bluetoothed to my headset which gave me a good startle. Random alerts and flying don't mix!!
I hope the alert was false or they found the child that caused that alert

Hi 310. Nice to see u back w/ another great video. Man, the sound of those 2 Continental 0-470B is just awesome. Great flights and happy landings from Portugal.
You handled that well, Kevin, and it is a great lesson for others. I hope all is well with you and your family.
I've been a huge fan of the Cessna 310 since the 1950's but never had a chance to fly in one. Thanks to your videos I have the opportunity to fly vicariously. Thank you so much.
Kevin and Jamie, I have immensely enjoyed your adventures for the past year. Although, not a Pilot or even a Traffic Controller, I hope to one day, at 74 years young, get the training necessary to be a competent, responsible Pilot and enjoy the travel and freedom to expose my family in Texas to the joy, safety and commitment to flying. You've inspired me greatly to explore the friendly skies Kevin. You are a Pilots Pilot. Responsible, Conscientious, schooled, sober and completely bonded to the art, science and craft of flying. You guys are amazing.
Jamie, you're in good and capable hands under any circumstances. He's got your 6 babe, always.
I really like how you and the helicopter pilot worked together on the approach and landing. That showed extremely good airmanship on the part of both of you. Great examples for other pilots.
Flying army helicopters, we always landed to the taxiway or to the "H" to help traffic that needed to land on the runway (fixed wing) to get out of the way. It was a ton easier to help them out.
Yes. This is why I will miss Rich and his 310 videos. While I don't intend to pilot any aircraft, it is cool to learn about what it takes to fly, instrument navigation, and proper *communication skills* in stressful situations , both near 0 ft (taxiing), and at 12,000 ft (air to air communication). My communication skills are not that good, since I have a bit of ASD disorder, but I am learning to improve myself everyday. :)
I am on pins and needles waiting to hear what's coming. Nice to see you flying. What ever is happening or already did happened wish you the best.
Those Amber Alerts scare the hell out of me when I'm sitting on my couch, I can't imagine flying and hearing that gawd-awful alert.
Ever been a crowded restaurant or similar setting when one was released? In my experience, maybe 75% alarmed simultaneously, with the remainder straggling through soon after.
those alerts will get your attention .. thats for sure
I love Amber Alerts in church. Nothing better!
You can go into setting and turn them off.
Kevin - your channel helped encourage me to get back into flying after 13 years away. Thank you. Hopefully your hiatus won’t be as long. A couple hours a year in a flight school trainer is good for the heart.
While I don't fly, I find it a fascinating profession, cos I like science, technology and human interaction (listening to the comms). What type of plane do you fly, and what is your cruising speed (TAS) and altitude? If your plane isn't pressurized, how do you handle hypoxia at 10,000+ ft?
I can always understand and appreciate the chop or turbulence from your vertical stabilizer camera. Not sure how much stabilization that camera provides but you can realize the experienced turbulence from that footage.
Great flight, sure beats driving to a meeting back home.
The alert made me jump, thinking it was the plane alerting.
Thanks for sharing.
That was an expensive meeting, but sure better that driving. Very nice landings. That was cool talking to a Blackhawk! I keep looking to see if you've sold 1BC yet.
One of the first things I do is turn those alerts off. Working on call 24/7/365 I didn't not want to be woken up by those during my sleep. I can see and hear how distracting they can be when you are in the middle of important tasks. Lesson learned. Keep up the great videos, enjoy every one you post. Thanks for the rides.
17:55 Nice save! Thanks for the ride.
Hi Kevin, yeah, that amber alert would have gotten my attention. Next time go into your settings and turn that function off before your flight. Great video, hoping something better is coming down the road in the future.
Amber Alerts! So much fun. Turbulence also, so much fun. It didn’t look to bad. Go ARMY!. I turn the alerts off on my phone when flying. It looked like a great flight. Thank you for the video. I am looking forward to your next one and I am also looking forward to seeing what new equipment your are getting. Take care, God’s Blessings, Tail Winds & Blue Skies!
you are featured in the daily dose of internet the scene was a couple having a trouble in their plane. now I'd like to watch your videos, keep flying high! God bless!
I've never BT'd my headphones and phones together and after that rude awakening I don't know if I ever will. Good to see you posting a flight video
I fly out of KJVL, Beth is my favorite of the Rockford controllers, such a sweetheart!
If you visit Madison, make sure you go when they have the farmer’s market around the Capitol building. The people watching is always fun and the produce is always fresh. Get some cheese curds while you’re there!
Thanks Kevin. I really appreciate how you think out loud so I know things to be dealt with. The amber alert. We often learn new things. Hope you can write off the trip expense
I would doubt it. Unless ATCs are treated as independent contractors, he was just heading to work...
@@troyjollimore4100 OTOH, never underestimate the power of gubmint work 😉
Hope you are getting some interest in 1BC. Cannot wait to see what is next. Since you recently moved, best guess is not far. Good luck with the sale!
Cool to see you were in my home state! I live about 29 miles away from that airport!
Be safe. It’s wonderful to see you guys.
Ha! 18:44 zaps him again. Good lesson for all of us.
Love the channel, looking forward to your next adventure.
Those calls "simply fly 1" is actually my flight school. That's crazy to hear. WHOA UR THAT PLANE. Also I love Rockford some of the best people to talk to, and land at. I also have the light speed headset so it is good to know not to have Bluetooth on. Amazing video, see you around
Hey Kevin, we live in Madison and would love to show you two around! Drop a note next time you're at MSN or C29.
We love your videos!
Hope u guys are ok . Enjoy your videos
Never been there. Enjoy your time
Kevin I can totally relate to the alert when it went off, I honestly believe I lost a few years off my heart function and overall life thanks to it. My flight helmet is outfitted with the Lightspeed Zulu that I pair with my work phone. Learned real quick to turn all those alerts off. I was in ATL’s Bravo when it hit, working about 1.5 north of 26R centerline while they were giving me wake turbulence advisory. Soon as I was done and cleared out of the Bravo, I put it down in a County park and turned off all alerts. Only takes one, and you had multiple.
Kevin, when are you going to spill the beans on what you and Jamie are up to? Hope you stay in aviation and have another channel. I really enjoy what you present.
Hope all is well. Keep the videos coming.
Smokie Skies are do to All the Wildfires in Northern California, friends in Idaho got it really bad, but it blows all the way to the East Coast!
Kevin, thank you for sharing.
I've had the same thing happen when I had my phone BT'd to my car stereo. Scares the crap out of you. At least I didn't have it interfering with my communications.
Always fun to ride along. Go Dawgs!
Roll Tide Roll
Wooo pigs sooie! 😬😀
Go CLEMSON TIGERS
You have a lot of loyal subscribers, myself included. Would be nice to hear from you what the future plan is for this channel. It’s one thing to leave some suspense on the table but this time frame is getting to be a bit much. Another couple weeks of no update on it I will probably be checking out with the sub. I truly hope that’s not the case because I really enjoy your videos. But if so, thanks in advance for the time you shared with us!
Hello from Minnesota!! Wow that would have Startled Me Too!
Closed on the house in Summerville yesterday. Gonna like living up there.
An Oshkosh resident here recommending if you're ever back in the Baraboo area to check out Devils Lake State Park. Wisconsin's most visited state park and absolutely beautiful in the fall. Be sure to check out Devils Doorway and Balanced Rock.
Another fun video Kevin, thanks mate
Sure going to miss the videos!
Excellent flying Kevin! Not sure that I could beat you with those landings in anything I fly, maybe, just maybe the Skyhawks I fly 10 hours a week! How do you think the Lewis tower transition is going to go? I don't think its going to go well
Those Amber alerts make me jump just sitting in my living room! Can't be any fun having that in your ear at 4,500' in the air!
I live west of Madison, near KMRJ. Madison is a fantastic city. You should explore the area if you ever get the chance.
Small college town, no?
Whoa! Even with the advanced knowledge based in the title, when that Amber Alert went off my initial reaction was "CRAP!, what failed?"
I am from Madison and you are correct that the big lake is Mendota and the next smaller one visible is Monona. Runway 36 approach takes you over Monona and my house. Fun fact: Madison is one of only two major U.S. cities built on an isthmus. The Wisconsin Capitol (modeled after the US Capitol but 3 feet shorter) sits on the high ground on the isthmus.
Damn i though it was not a amber alert but a emergency message as they sound the same. thank god you put it in the title.
i felt the stomach sinking feeling when that amber alert went off. good to have in the back of my mind to keep the phone off of bluetooth.
Airplanes must give choppers in close proximity respect. Those rotor vortices can take you out just like jet wingtip vortices.
Great Video Kevin
Very eventful flight on the way back to Madison, Kevin
Louisiana native here living in the midwest now (Indiana). I fly out of Bloomington and can attest this past summer was extremely hazy...crazy hazy actually.
The haze was very noticeable even on the ground. It was from the western wildfires I believe.
Fires out west... smoke drifted over... settled in over the midwest.
Yes that was Lake Mendota & the smaller one is Manona. Univ. Wisconsin campus sits right there off to Your right when You were headed home. The student union is right on the Lake Mendota serving Cold Beer and food. State Street a 3-4 block pedestrian walkway is a must visit. Madison is Beautiful.
Thanks 310 Pilot
Kevin that was loud. Cant imagine in your head set. Can i ask why you chose a twin cessna over a piper cherokee 6? What is your fuel burn?
Kev, You and Jamie need to get another plane and get these videos going again. Miss you two so much
The videos haven't stopped yet
It can take years to sell a plane
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn Not in this market!
@@ParadigmUnkn0wn last I saw they had a offer on 1BC and the hanger
Yeah, its sold. And they are getting out of flying sadly
Gday Kevin, ..Just curious as to what that spike is on cylinder 5, right engine ? (I think) .. (I had a quick squiz through the comments and could not see any one else having asked about that - dodgy sensor maybe?) .. Thanks for the Videos. Pots.
Kevin, my first C340 initial flight, we are finishing the runup and my phone and my flight instructor's phone (both bluethoothed to our headsets), go berserk. Some Amber alert that neither of us have ever heard. And I'm wondering wth is wrong with the plane. Needless to say, after about 30 seconds we figure it out that it's not the plane but some APB / BOLO on some car in the local area. I have since forever turned that function off on my phone.
Fun flight
Great video. Man, that amber alert was loud just listening to the video.
Go to Notifications- Alerts- then deselect as desired.
Hope you guys get another plane. Sure enjoy the videos..
Good to see you flying your 310 again. I thought you were selling it no?
Holy crap! Those tones would’ve scared the bejesus out of me.
Really going to miss the videos
So, maybe you've already said and I just missed it, but, what are you guys going to be doing once you sell 1BC and the hanger and things... any news on plans moving forward?
Yes. Amber Alerts keep repeating until you acknowledge them.
This video looks like it was made this past summer. But, I'm just wondering what has happened with the sale of the 310? Are you going to buy something else? Something less expensive to maintain? Whatever you do, good luck. You deserve it.
That’s cool that you talked to the Blackhawk helicopter pilot before you landed
I notice a high reading on one cylinder on your right engine. Did you lose a sensor?
Airplane mode.... We kind of like being your right seat companion as if it helps you subconsciously run through your checklist. The only thing I see missing is a flight plan if you go missed or have failure. So easy to get used to nominal and forget, crap happens... Cheers 310
Hello like your videos want know wich camera are you use? Good quality
I may be behind times, did you not have the plane for sale, maybe, yes? good flight, good work..
What camera mount are you using on the front windshield?
Yep, Lake Mendota
Many years ago, while working toward my private pilot license, I was on a cross country flight on a turbulent day. I was just departing an airport about 70 miles from my base, fighting a crosswind, and my pager (before cell phone days) starting going off. Scared the sweat out of me until I realized it was not related to the flight, just work trying to find me.
Pagers made me twitch in a way that cell phones just don't. Maybe I got used to it?
I used to fly helos cross country and never got cell service above 1200'. How times have changed.
I had an Amber Alert scream through my headset last fall while arriving in the pattern in Wautoma, WI - scared the hell outta me!
That’s why I disable all alerts on my phone. It’ll do that in the middle of the night, too.
I've been a loyal watcher, too, but just to get my two bits in on the matter of reported changes which might in fact end this channel and our ability to watch the flying adventures of this pair, since they ain't fictional characters in a script but are rather real people with lives, honestly I don't really care why they're signing off or what they'll be doing henceforth. Rather, I enjoyed it while I could. That's life. We enjoy the things we can while we can. Life itself included.
Luv the lope of those 540s when they first start up
Thanks
Going to be a real bummer when your weekly videos stop coming out!
Did they ever say why they are stopping the videos?
That why I disabled amber alert. 99% are just child custody disputes bs.
@@benlent3254 And in Texas they can be hundreds of miles from me. Nothing better than being jolted awake at 3AM for an alert that's clear on the other side of the state.
@@benlent3254 Selling plane and hanger. They had a new opportunity come up. Not sure if it's a new plane or personal-Professional. I know both are ATC's
@@cliffspencer3173 Fellow Texan - And from towns that you've never heard of.
I’m disappointed that 310pilot has let others know but left his CZcams followers hanging for so long. According to posts Kevin made on an aviation website, he and Jamie moved away from the airport where 1BC was hangared and his work schedule for the foreseeable future won’t allow much time for him (them) to fly so they decided to sell rather than let the plane just sit.
They will certainly be missed. I really enjoyed following them on their adventures. They are a great team.
Life certainly gets in the way. I will miss them too. I'm sure they will appear on CZcams in the future
I'm not sure what is happening either, but in their announcement
Jamie said they had an great offer the couldn't pass up.
Also Jamie did the talking and he looked sad.
One if only 3 flying videos I follow, others and not even close to yours, you are real people and always make things understandable, good genuine hearts.
Will miss you big time.
@@victoriamoore1294 I am with you, Jamie talked about an opportunity that came up or something like that, but the looks sad.....but then Kevin is saying something different in other vlogs, and no comments in this channel. I don't get it, there must be a reason...at the end, it is their life. I just wish them all the best.
@@victoriamoore1294 $$$! ;)
The Amber Alert was so loud it sounded like I had it against my ear. And you're right no one's a fan of that kind of nonsense
The difference between cowboy boots and truck driver boots is that cowboy boots have the Bovine Stuff on the outside. * I hate amber alert tones, especially when they wake me up at 1:30 AM. I can imagine what they sound like through headphones.
Good Lesson. I will comply…. On a side note: whatever the reason for your departure from 310. If you have the need for horizontal speed? I’d offer up my Aerostar700 for the price of fuel.
Noticed the 310 is not on controller any longer, but still registered to you on the FAA website. Did you deicide to keep it!!
Kev said they had old ones they would post for awhile...something new is coming in the future.
Lol the Amber Alert definitely startled you.
Nice. But we always like to see Jamie!
I thought once you acknowledge the Amber alert on the phone it won't go off again. If you just silence the phone it keeps going off every few minutes until you acknowledge it alert or they alert gets canceled.
310 pilot is your aircraft still on the market in trade a plane?
That haze is forest fire smoke from CA
Kevin was it an amber alert, or weather warnings?
Weather warnings on a phone don't scream like that.
Dotty's Dumpling Dowry, do not let the name fool you, they have THE best burgers in Madison. They are a must visit Kevin.
I turn the aggravating Amber alerts off on my phone PERIOD! Just TOO LOUD and ALARMING!
can't what for more information on NEW plane ?
If I had to guess Kevin took either a full time or part time job flying for someone. He enjoys flying way too much to quit cold Turkey. Any of us who have been bit by the flying bug know you just don’t walk away unless it’s for financial or health reasons. I know a controller that kept his day job but was type rated and flew for a private family on the side. As I get older I dread the day I’ll have to sell the plane and hang it up, it’s not that easy.
Well, on the bright side, a new pilot would treat your plane well when you sell it, and get just as much enjoyment and delight from cruising at 10,000 ft above the clouds. :)
🙌🙌🙌🙌
Oh man!!!!
You can turn off alerts on your phone. I sure as heck did.
