I've also heard that Charlotte Tilburry offers some good olive undertones bit.ly/2xjaOE9
And also the new Dior foundation bit.ly/3ediTLl
And the Fenty Pro Filt'r Foundation bit.ly/39Yuz15 - when I swatched these they were too yellow for my skin
In the past, I've mixed green color drops or a green primer with my foundation to neutralize redness and get a closer color match :)

I've been working in the jewelry business for many years now, and would like to share my thoughts on choosing gold or silver coloured jewelry.
I don't think the colour theory works 100% for jewelry. For example you look amazing in both gold and silver, and sometimes I find gold suits your even more and I'll get to that. Some people look very obviously better in one than the other, then there's people who can wear both.
I've seen some people with very clearly cold undertone (pink hue) but because their hair is blond, a light gold color just looks so much better on them. Note that there's different shades of gold depending on the karat, and the alloy put into the gold. Some 10 or 14kt gold are light yellow, whereas usually 18kt or higher would be a very rich yellow. Same with rose gold, some are so pink it looks almost like copper, and others are just slightly pinker than a regular yellow gold. So try different shades of gold, as one might suit you better than the other.
I personally find, if you want the colour of the metal to suit you, go with your personality and general vibe. This is from years of experience and because I find the skin colour theory just doesn't work for many people when it comes to jewelry. First, jewelry only takes very little of the space on our body as supposed to clothing and other accessories, secondly gold or silver are metallic, and work differently than just a colour. For example, polished silver coloured jewelry without stones have a hue and shine that's like knives, very clean, sharp and cold, whereas gold is warm, rich soft, and luxurious.
Going back to choosing the right metal, for instance I find that, because you have a very warm presence and personality, gold has this warm glow that compliment this aspect of you. And some people appear more cold and distant, who have more of a "ice queen" kind of aura, in this case the sharpness of silver would enhance this trait.
Now this is just my theory and observation. I'm not saying it's right, just putting it out there to see if people find it helpful or not at all. And I'd like to hear what others think of this theory using themselves as an example.

Thank you for this information. Especially for mentioning the "ice queen" effect. I'm a light redhead - golden frackles and strawberry blond hair. So people always tell me I should wear gold. But I just hate anything gold. And it makes me look old and boring. I absolutely love anything cool toned like silver or steel. And since I'm deffinitely the "ice queen" personality, cool metals feel much more like "me".

Very educating you guys, You don’t know how much I get inspired by others ladies even in comment section, as you said , all explains a lot ,maybe the best way is to go out and start trying different jewelry on ourselves, from your writing I realized one I had 24k yellow gold which is very yellow,as I am warm skinned it looked too shiny and light on me, then I bought 18k yellow gold and Magic happened, it was less shiny and made my skin glow, also the silver I tried ,they have different colors, those polished lighter silver never suite me,then I start buying those worn out colors or antique silver jewelry instead or buy kind of mat silver color which is not as much shiny.

I think a video reviewing how to determine undertone would be wonderful....I am a 'neutral'...so my veins are neither green nor blue but somewhere in between but for years I was deemed a Winter because I, too, have Irish coloring so dark hair, light skin and dark eyes....I could not understand why I looked OK in gold or silver when I was told just to use silver/white gold.....a more detailed approach to truly finding your skin tone would be soooo very helpful...Big Hugs Angel....great job as always...

I have the same colouring as you. For years I thought I was warm but I am actually neutral with a tendency toward cool. I can wear all of the colours for a deep winter and some colours for a deep autumn. Usually, the brighter, more jeweled tones. I don’t look good in rusts, browns or beiges. Hope this helps.

Thank you for this comment! I have a mostly Irish background, and have been trying to determine my undertone for many years. I *think* I'm neutral, but my eyes are olive green, which causes me to lean warm. My skin is light and my hair is dark, and I can't find any obvious warmth or coolness in either. If I stand next to a very cool person, I look warm. If I stand next to a very warm person, I look cool. But there are people that say that you cannot be neutral. 🙄

      @cozybrandi Před 4 lety

MerriamStyle has great videos on “neutral” skintones. I thought I was neutral as well, but we all lean cool or warm slightly, even if you’re also olive skin-toned. It just won’t be as obvious as people with more “radiant” skin tones. You are probably cool and delicate or warm and delicate, meaning you will look better in softer, muted colors. I look okay in silver and gold. I look slightly better in silver so I assumed I was cool. But bright colors don’t look right on me. A better test is to try rose gold and gunmetal, since these are less bright and closer to neutral.

I find being cool toned , we get away with wearing both tones, one ends up kinda blending in while the other pops. I mix metals all the time and as long as I don't have the jewelry near my face (Or in my facial piercings , I don't find it clashes at all)
Love this video! I say wear what you love, the confidence that love gives you cannot be wrong!

Great video, and you look gorgeous in that navy! This brought me back to a few years before my mother's unexpected passing when she individually asked my sister and me, "Which do you want me to leave you, my gold or my silver?" And I was like, "Uhhh..." I think anything we're gifted or inherit are things we'll work around as we coordinate our personal style. That would be a great separate video - pick one sentimental item that's not ideal color theory-wise, and make it cohesive and flattering.

Very good video. I have exactly the same “problem”. I’m deep winter but culturally, I’m Spanish, we wear a lot of gold jewellery and I really like it. I have been gifted some really nice pieces over the years and I plan to wear them forever. I just make them work for me. Thanks very much for the video Audrey :)

@tammyclewley could be, I have to wear a wig that is darker then what my natural hair color would be, all the lighter ones wash me out. I don't know if that adds to the confusion.

Check your veins under natural daylight. If they're green-ish then you're warm toned. If they're purple-ish then you're cool toned. If you have both then that means you're neutral.
But that's just a rough guideline and tip I saw from another video. Hope it's helpful!

I really like your tone of voice and overall attitude. I'm going into my 30's now and as much as I love the fashion bloggers that focus on younger clothes/topics...it's just really nice to see some women that are more mature, and who are focusing on style for YOU. Not style for trends.

Hi Audrey. I just watched your 5 classic jewelry pieces and 5 extras video from May 2018. Very straight forward, very easy to understand. Your videos are a great complement to the classic ladies' styling lessons I am getting from the stylist I am working with. I look forward to your future videos. I hope you will do a video on capsule wardrobe pieces for summer 2020.

Hello Audrey, thanks for this lovely, informative video. I, as well have a cool undertone and yellow gold does not compliment or flatter me. Most of my jewelry is white gold and sterling silver. What I discovered in recent years is that rose gold also looks beautiful on my skin being that my cool undertone is rosy/pink. Rose gold provides warmth without clashing 😊

Mind blown! Would have never thought you were half Colombian! Thank you for this video I’m always torn about how to mix jewelry in my hands because my engagement ring is white gold with diamonds and blue sapphires. However, now that I’m older I prefer yellow gold and like you, I’m also an olive undertone.

I'd love to hear more on this topic (colour theory) and how rose gold fits in also. Also how do you store your jewellery?
I think I'm neutral colour toned as it's not overly obvious looking at my veins. I've always thought of myself as cool tone (fair skin, blue eyes, brunette)
Thankyou Audrey, such wonderful content! Take care 🙂

I'd love to hear more about olive skin tones as well. I am still confused with whether I am cool winter or warm autumn. I'd like to know of one colour which I definitely would look awful in to strike out one versus the other, instead of listing all the colours I can wear. There are some overlaps I think. Thanks, Audrey. Love all videos!

Very interesting and enjoyable video. I grew up mostly wearing silver jewelry because my mom had her color analysis done when I was a kid and the lady said my sister and I had the same cool/winter coloring. Occasionally, I'd wear my gold pieces instead, but I usually felt they looked a little 'off' on me. However, my husband liked yellow gold and my engagement ring and wedding band are yellow gold, and after that, I started to find more gold jewelry that I liked. I think some gold appears more yellow than others too. Anyway, sometimes I can't fully tell which suits me best and I don't necessarily want to have to choose! So thanks for the advice on mixing metals in a tasteful and balanced way.

  • @keodi1

Great video Audrey! this video really helped me. I recently had my colour analysis professionally done, and found out that I'm a true winter. I have true black hair, and very dark brown eyes almost black. I was told silver/platinum jewelry is best, and while I wear silver tone of jewelry, and own some expensive pieces in silver/platinum/white gold, I also have gold tone pieces given to me by friends and family. I was really surprised and confused by my analysis that i'm cool toned as all of my foundation matches done by makeup professionals have been neutral cool. I was always told that my overtone is golden so your explanation makes a lot of sense. My skin tone (overtone is deep/olive) by my undertones are cool, which explains why I appear warm toned. Thank you! I would love to see a video on why you chose the colour choices in your wardrobe as a true/deep winter, in other words do you choose colours outside your season?. Thank you again Audrey!
