He was one of a kind. He is the reason I became a fan of basketball.
Even at his last years , he was a dominant figure on the court . I have seen him im eighties
I saw him (and Oscar) in 1972 vs the Kings in Omaha, the legendary year Tiny led the league in scoring & assists... truly dominant and absolutely 'larger than life'.
I actually went to about 16-17 games in 1972-73, the NBA has not gotten 'better', different... but not better.

Kareem by far has the best resume in basketball history from high school, college & pros
Thank John Wooden and Pat Riley, the greatest coaches in their respective eras.
Wooden won 7 straight national championships for UCLA with different teams. He won his first 2 with guards, his next one with forwards, his next 1 with the backcourt players, and the last 3 with Centers. That's a great coach.
Riley was a beast of a coach in the 80's. He actually is one of the few good NBA players to make a great coach later on.
Riley played with Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor , and Jerry west in the 1970's as a Laker. Having played against Kareem, he must have been thankful to have the big fella on his side when coaching.
Wilt Chamberlain

100% correct. The guy barely lost in high school and college, then got 6 rings and became the highest ever point scorer
If you wanna see Kareem’s greatness, look at Bucks’ record year before he was drafted vs rookie year and look at Bucks’ record during time he was injured in 75 vs rest of that season. Then realize he had 12 more years as an efficient volume scorer while serving his positional role of a rim protector and board machine after that Bucks stretch.

Kareem Abdul jabber skyhook hook 🪝, greatest scoring weapon in sports history
Skyhook stopped by Wilt multiple times.
The thing that was amazing about his skyhook was the range on it. He was accurate with that thing from 15-20’, not just in the post, and if an off defender fell asleep he’d fake the hook and dump it down low to a cutter for an easy layup. He was an outstanding passer, defender, even FT shooter, there were no holes in his game.
Exactly....it wasn't just in the post...it was so deadly...basically you just had to get him the ball within 20 ft and it's an instant score
I got to see a lot of Kareem, but one thing that stands out was late era Kareem, with the Lakers. It was a playoff game, and he calmly sank a sky hook from nearly 3 point range, near the corner. I couldn't believe it.
When it comes to Kareem, Russell, Wilt, Shaq...does it even matter? It's just a matter of taste at that point. All four centers would be in the 10 best basketball players of all time. Any of them give you a great chance of winning.

This video made me look at Jabbar in a different light. He is the GOAT to me because he was dominant for so long.

Add the fact that as a freshman (when he was ineligible to play) he took the freshman team at UCLA and beat the NCAA Championship UCLA team....a hardly known fact.

What makes Kareem legendary to me is the longevity of his career. He was productive even into his 40s. The way he was still able to play up to that time is amazing.
Kareem today looks like a 55-60 year old rather than a 74 year old.
It’s because black don’t crack

Kareem has had the best basketball (HS- NBA) career ever.
What wasn't mentioned was that during his first 6 seasons in the NBA, attendance doubled from 5 to 10 million. A brief plateau then came Showtime with Magic and attendance went from 10 to 17 million per season during their time together. Maybe a coincidence but I believe he had a lot to do with the increases. If not #1, where he is in my book, definitely in the top 3 players of all time. I am lucky enough to see him play twice as a Lakers.

Just because you have a low profile persona doesn’t mean you’re not the GOAT.
The meaning of “Kareem Abdul-Jabbar” explains everything.
Kareem, you’re the genuine GOAT.
I'm really surprised this guy is talked about more. Super star for sure.
Kareem is an example of a guy that is supposed to be somewhat clumsy, but through practice became absolutely great.
I never understood why people just completely overlook Kareem in the GOAT debate.
In my opinion I think it’s because Kareem couldn’t win without Magic. He won one championship in 1971, but from 1972-1979 he didn’t win anything. If he won 1 championship at least, things can and probably will change.
@@scgamer ah...but he did win a championship without Magic. Johnson was in elementary school when Lew hoisted the trophy. That would be easy to pick on any player. Watch this example...Michael Jordan couldnt win without Scottie Pippen. That is literally true. Jabbar won the title with a recent expansion team in 1971 but Jordan didn't.
Let's be serious.

Because he was not that physically strong down low and also not a great rebounder. He did block shots during his younger years though. During his lean years when the Lakers were not contenders, he was criticized for taking his time to reach the front court. His longevity can't be ignored. Nobody had a better peak than Kareem either. Few come even close.
Hank Aaron never had a monster season. KAJ had least 5. More if you include his defense.

Kareem was an amazing player, but lets be real, if Blocks were recorded in the 60s that would just be another stat that Wilt would own

Wilt’s my favorite, and my personal vote, but Kareem should always be in the conversation, he has an incredible résumé and i’d love to see how many of the other contenders for the title of greatest could guard against his Sky Hook.
Kareem never shoot 3s but he is number 1 all time scoring leaders

Magic is my favorite also. I was born in 1963.
So hard to compare Kareem, a center, to MJ, a guard, and of course Lebron, more of a power 3-man. They are all freakishly good in their own positions, and although I find it impossible to compare their talents, they do bring up some fantastic stats to argue that Kareem is the GOAT. Funny how Kareem is normally left out (not to mention Bill Russell and Wilt), and everyone simply narrows it down to MJ and Lebron.
Couldn’t have said it any better
I think past the top 10 it's all about personal taste. It's so hard to rank these legends, just enjoy the ones who are still playing and respect those who already retired.
Lebrun? Are u high kid. So if it’s impossible to compare how is it only in the conv for lebuns and mj?
LeBron really shouldn't be in the conversation anymore. Statistically, Side by side, Kareem is clearly better. So regardless of where you rank every one else, LeBron should always be behind Kareem.

Of the players I’ve watched play regularly Kareem is the one I would build a team around. Bird, Magic, Jordan would be on the team but he is the one I would go with as #1. Wilt, Russell were before my time and I stopped watching in the 90’s so can’t comment on Kobe or Lebrun.
Lebron led teams made 8 straight NBA Finals and 9 Finals in 10 years (spanning 3 different franchises). The year he missed, he was injured.
Russell played in 10 straight finals, won 8 in a row. For his career, he played in the finals 12 of 13 years, winning 11. The closest, who wasn't a Celtic that played with him, is Robert Horry with 7.
I know Kareem is ahead on blocked shots and they didn't count blocks his first four years but it would be interesting on how many blocks Wilt had and would have averaged.if counted
In the games preserved on film, Wilt averaged 8.6 blocks per game. In the 1971-72 NBA-ABA All-Star game, he spiked a couple of Artis Gilmore hooks, along with blocking Dr J at the rim. For kicks, you might check out the CZcams video about 43 year old Wilt's destruction of Magic Johnson's All-stars in a pickup game.
