Dennis is the best role player of all time in my opinion. Not just because he’s one of the best rebounders, hustlers, and outlet passers but because he actually made the other players play worse.
His off the ball defensive antics are legendary. Dennis got in plenty of fights but wouldn’t actually punch you. He would just piss you off until you shoved him or tried to punch him and then he knew he was in your head. You’re more worried about how to hit him back without getting caught rather than focusing on your game. Bro was like poison to opposing players.

Id go as far to say he is the best off the ball player, he kinda defended 5 guys at the same time, not in literal sense of locking them down, but in the way you explained, plus you were always scared if you miss against him more than agains others because you knew that the ball will almost always end up in his hands. also works other way around, if you are on his team your shots are way more relaxed knowing he is waiting if you screw up. he himself once said something similair to this

Dennis is the prime example of a man who had tremendous heart, and relentless motor. Getting rebounds is all effort, especially on the offensive end, the fact Dennis statistically outrebounded Russel and Wilt is absolutely insane…
He was my role model when i was a kid during high school intramurals…. My father told me since all your teamates want to score and do the offense why dont you get the rebounds and play defense with heart.

i'm glad this video touched on his Bball IQ - I feel like that was Rodman's most underappreciated asset. I honestly believe Rodman could go down as one of the best assistant coaches of all time. His ability to analyze the game and focus extensive hours on each players is unreal.

You never see guys literally throwing their entire bodies through the air all the time in every single game the way Dennis did. He showed more hustle and heart on defense than anybody ever has, and he could also score if necessary. He went all out just to win, and Michael deeply respected that intensity and desire to win because he was that way too.
KG on the same level in that regard of hustling and playing with heart. Main difference was KG was better offensive player while Rodman had better Defensive IQ

2:50 I greatly appreciate that you took the time to mention how defense takes more effort and willpower than offense. too often it's looked at as being easier, or just overlooked because it isn't as flashy. there is a reason that there are fewer great defenders than there are great offensive players, it's more difficult and takes more skill and brainpower.

It was such a pleasure watching Rodman play when I grew up. It was not unusual to see him play most of a game with 0pts, a few assists, and 20+ rebounds. His defense and sheer will on the court made him an animal.
I like Rodman's story alot. Usually athletes with very problematic life ends up getting dragged down by it which ruins their playing career, but this freak of nature carried on like a soldier and even became the GOAT of defensive basketball. Massive respect to him🔥

I suppose this boils down to his natural and background history,ie nature of his mental origin, birth and upbringing.
What was needed in such nature, and was lacking, which he also experienced and made it his purpose to create and provide that,and that become a priority,an interest and motivation/driving force.
Like Larry Bird you had to watch Dennis Rodman play to understand why he was great. Two of the most unique players in NBA history.

Dennis is the NBA player I would most like to have a dinner and drinks with, and just listen to the man talk. I can't place it perfectly, but it feels like he has such an amazingly huge heart and love for his fellow man, but he just feels so achingly alone.

He was one of the very best one-on-one defenders to ever play the game. Also, He played 14 seasons with the Detroit Pistons, San Antonio Spurs, Chicago Bulls, Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks. He also clashed with David Robinson and never seen to respected him as a player, so he never liked him at all.

Rodmans offense is criminally underrated, he had stated that "Scoring is easy" and he DID make it look easy whenever he scored. Rodman may had accepted his role of being defense but his offense was enough to shock people.

After I got moved up a grade for an elementary BB team half the players wouldn't pass me the ball. No problem. I was in Michigan and Rodman was on the Pistons...I knew who to model my game after and it was a blast.
He’s the prime example of working extremely hard and party extremely hard! My Uncle saw Prime Dennis up close in Las Vegas in the late 90s said he didn’t have one ounce of body fat was as ripped as a Greek God.

The Pistons were in the 87 ECF when Rodman was 8th in min, Rodman never won with San Antonio, the Bulls had a 3peat before Rodman.
Rodman was the nearly perfect complimentary player to Jordan. Worked as hard as MJ, especially in the playoffs. Rodman was arguably the Finals MVP of the Seattle series or at least the closest another Bull came to taking the finals MVP over Jordan.

One of the greatest rebounders and defenders. He won 7 straight rebounding titles (Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain never did that feat) . He also won 5 titles with the Pistons (Joe Dumars and Isiah Thomas) and Bulls (Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen) .
Wilt and russel would have 13 straight rebounding titles if one of them played in another era so they didnt have to compete againist eachother and rodman was never the best player on his the rings that he won

Dennis made rebounding a science. He got to the top, by figuring out the most likely trajectory of a rebound from every other player on the court, and being there when it happened. Brilliant basketball mind. Nothing else mattered, and that made him one of the premier rebounders of his era. He was also the only NBA player to look good in a dress. There should be a trophy for that.

If you're building a championship team, since there's no way you're running 5 GOAT candidates, Dennis is a GREAT SF/PF pick. With a coach that can steer him, he's absolutely incredible. He's a guy that you can leave 1 on 1 with almost anyone in NBA history, that'll get you 15 rebounds a game and doesn't need or particularly even want the ball on offense.
He's in my dream lineup that you *might* actually be able to get on one team. 😂

smart man, ive been saying this forever, best lineup is not the same as best players on each position. Kevin garnett and Tim Duncan are also great picks for the team as Garnett could literally play any position and he showed tha he can be third option very well, and Tim is just Tim, no point in explaining him. Ben Wallace is also great option and heavily overlooked. Jason Kidd is another one

Drop both Rodman and Jordan and put in Reggie & Bird. Bird was actually a great rebounder. And with both Bird & Reggie you'll have the floor really spaced out so they can't easily double Hakeem.

Or maybe you want to keep Jordan, but you want to add Lebron. So then you drop Hakeem and Pippen to pick up Lebron and Ben Wallace or Mutumbo. But then you'd need more offense, so maybe drop Rodman and pick up someone like Rasheed Wallace. And then just cause, swap Fisher for Ron Harper.
