- Many People have had issues with the D-pad not clicking as the spring can come loose or get caught under the D-pad tabs. Here is a quick tutorial on how to fix that.
- Hry
Thank you for the helpful video. Props for how quickly and effortlessly you pulled those side grip pads off.
Ok so what if the button still isnt clicking? Could you go deeper into the dpad to show some solutions,or is my dpad done for?
I had this same question! I know this is super old but I still found this video when I was looking, so maybe this will help someone:
First, I dripped a small amount of hand sanitizer in there. I'm sure pure rubbing alcohol would have been better. Try at your own risk. Then I kind of mopped it up with the corner of a napkin.
My dpad button was still stuck in the pressed position (it was the right one, by the way). So I took a piece of packing tape and folded it so I could stick it to that button only and try to pull it out of the pressed position. it worked, but then it slipped right back to pressed. I figured I was done for and it had lost its spring, but I kept messing with it. After many times of pulling it back into the unpressed position, it stayed there and could click down. I had to do it more before I could click it and it would unclick on its own.
I put it back together and it seems to be ok so far, but try this at your own risk I guess; I am no expert, and it was a janky process.
@@ursafacet even though this is a super old topic i needed this today, thanks man alot honestly
@@ursafacet OMG!!!THANK YOU
Right still clicks and lik 6 months old never dropped
@@ursafacet did that once and killed a controller don't need to kill a 200 $ one
I originally opened up my Controller to fix the Bumpers but then I needed to fix the D pad. Your video was perfect.
I don't like messing with things but your video made me feel at ease to give it a shot. Thank you soo much.
I was struggling to get the spring back in, but I put the top in first and it worked just fine. Just in case anyone was having the same issue with the newer controllers that have another longer tab to insert on the top. Awesome video, fixed it! Thanks :)
I love how he just goes you just need to take these covers off and does it in one second, and I cannot get mine off without cracking them.
Yeah my side covers are not coming off. Glued on?
@@malenotyalc yes they have a little double sided tape in it
I'm afraid of breaking the 2 backplates when removing them. :/
i was too but it didn't break
They sell a torq kit for $6 on Amazon comes with plastic tool to play open with scratches or breaking..I fixed 3 controllers in less than hour.
careful though xbox one controller needs a "safety torx" screwdriver theres also "T6 torx" so make sure you get the right one they look very similar.
Bow To Me I didn’t have a security torx so I took a flat head and snapped the middle out and then used a regular torx
Vashe Luca Nah, it’s really easy, I did it with my hands.
One semi important tip for the screws. The one in the middle, where the batteries are, I did not see at first. I only saw the 4 screws. 2 on each side, and then I tried opening the top off. Didn't work. What I didn't realize, there is a sticker covering the 5th screw. The one in the battery section is in the middle, just under the Zip code on the sticker. Just use a small device to tear open the sticker in that spot. Then poof ! , there's your last screw. Maybe most of you already knew this, but I didn't and I wanted to help out the others that didn't as well.
Great video ! I followed your directions, and also bought the specific tool to unscrew the screws. Was a few bucks on Amazon. Alas, it didn't fix my problem:(. Apparently my controller d pad is no longer working. Everything else on it works great. Oh well, was hoping I could just spend a few bucks for the tool as opposed to 40-50 bucks for a new controller. Thanks anyways
This was covered at 1:03 into the video - it is the first screw I show removed in the tutorial.
QUICKDRAWMODS1 I understand, but in your video you go right to it. The screw is visible in the battery area. I'm just saying in my controller, you don't see the screw. It's covered by a sticker. I didn't know the screw was behind it. But like I said, great video.
Not to seem petty but If I am showing everyone there are 5 screws and show there one under the battery cover and if a viewer is following along and sees a sticker on their controller, isn't it safe to assume their going to say to themself... "oh I have a screw under my sticker" I just saw it as common sense.
QUICKDRAWMODS1 You're right. It's all good. Thank you for the video.
To think I was about to buy a new controller when fixing mine was so easy. I had to bend the spring a good bit for it to work again, but it did! Thank you so much for this.
I had this problem and I was about to get a new controller but your video totally helped me out and I can’t thank you enough
omg thank you so much. i accidentialy dropped the dpad as I was doing something else and I panicked because i had no idea how to put it back tysm!
Thank you for posting this video. I was finally able to fix my day one controller!
The sensitivity on my d-pad seems off. Going to do this tonight when I get home, thank you for it!
is it very slow and Rt doesnt work?
+JaMes-KXDS couldn't be fixed ended up exchanging it
Thanks so much man! I was putting a new shell around my controller and the d-pad was not working properly at all.. Thanks to your video,, it is. My personal savior!
Thanks, worked like a charm. The hardest part was taking off the side panels. Was afraid of breaking them since it's my Cyberpunk 2077 controller. But now its all good. Decided to use a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol to also clean out any dirt/dead skin that built up in the controller while I had it open. Working perfectly fine now.
what a legend, cheers mate! dropped my controller and broke it into pieces, followed this and got it back to pristine condition! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
Thanks for the video luckily my d-pad wasnt broke i just cleaned it really well and bent the springs back and it works like a charm i liked and subscribed keep up the amazing work
thanks for the help. for some reason i was thinking the springs had to go under the d-pads tabs
my D-Pad is fine. It's just when i press down on the D-Pad, sometimes, nothing happens
Same it’s so annoying
Me too, have you fixed the problem?
@@thedirtydan8351 bought a new controller
Same or it repeatedly clicks even though I'm not touching the dpad.
bruh are u still here? im having the same problem
This fixed my problem so far. Appreciate the help!
My D pad clicks fine, but does not respond properly on screen. Sometimes you push two or three times before it moves once in a menu. Sometimes you push once and it jumps two or three spots. Any ideas?
Thank you! I had to buy a small tool kit and the back/side plates were still kinda tough to remove, but my dpad is clicking correctly now :D
Thanks man, figured out how to take out the entire Dpad and clean it so I can get the left and down buttons working properly again.
No offence man, but you sound so much like Peter Griffin.
Ba dum tss! 😂😂😂😂. Just noticed That
I swear Bruh
hey this is the latest one I have the one that came with the xbox do I have to remove my side plates off
Ba dum tss! That should be a good thing cause I LOVE family guy and I LOVE my man Peter
Ba dum tss! That’s a compliment
Should probably mention you need a T8 screwdriver to take this apart, they don’t use Phillips head screws
T8 security in mine. Regular T8 won't fit cause of the security pin in the centre.
yes, i don't have a T8 security screwdriver, nor a regular T8 and not even a T6, just realized when i peeled the sides and saw the format of the screws.
You are awesome, I just finished fixing my Xbox One controller because the D-pad down stopped clicking!!! Followed the video, and BAM works perfectly now!!!!!
Mine also
is my youtube crazy or this video has no sound?
This guide helped me fix my old and current xb1 controller. The left side of the dpad wasn't clicking for both of them.
the same reason is what led me here, I play a lot of Tekken which i believe is responsible for it happening as blocking and backing away are the same input..... also i feel like if i take it apart i won't be able to fix it again despite this video
I did this and it actually made the problem massively worse, as in my right direction that had become desensitized now almost doesn't work at all after doing this. I did bend the springs a bit more than you did - is it possible to go too much in the other direction like that? They don't look too bent or anything...
Thanks for this. My *new* controller's dpad left direction wasn't registering input even though you can feel and hear it click. I had to HARD press left for it to work. Suspected there was some dust build up between the dpad plastic and the PCB board. I opened it up, took the spring out, blew on it, put it back together. Working as expected now!
Does it still work now?
Thank you so much. great tutorial. Once I took off the dpad I just had to literally repoke the top part of the pad with my pinky because for some reason it wasnt clicking. After that I put dpad back on and the ring thingy and good as new. only had this for a month when this happened. thanks again
very helpful and THANK YOU for the awsome video quality
Thank you bro you saved me from buying another controller.
This Video helped me twice allready. first tim the metal was bend. now there was a dead bug under the dpad, LOL.
Thanks man didn't know how to take of the metal spring part
I got the Xbox series x 20th anniversary controller, and according to Google, some batches had the spring for the d-pad make an annoying slight sound like a guitar string.
Personally I really don't want to take my controller apart because it's a collector's item, so what do you think the noise is and what do you suggest?
what if it clicks bout requires more pressure than usual for the input to actually work? should I still try this?
The left side of my pad has no spring to it at all. When i'm running in hardline it drops ammo packs by itself. I was doing a lot of driving in 10 matches, then the left side of d pad went dead and the throwing of the ammo?
I thought i was gonna have to buy another new pad. Many thanks!
I have an elite controller where the dpad is acting weird. When I click up or down the dpad doesn't react the first time, but after the first click it reacts normally. Then, when I stop using it for a minute or so I have the same problem again. First try nothing happens and after that the dpad works fine as long as I keep clicking. Any idea what the problem could be?
my left dpad registers a long press even tho it clicks. In other words, it feels great but will fly across the screen if I push it . I cleaned it, etc. Can I use electrical spray?
I didnt even know you could remove the controller grip plates, I swapped the ones from a broken white controller to a perfectly fine black one, it looks cool
My down D pad on my series x controller is stuck and it won’t correct itself. I have tried blowing in it and rubbing alcohol what should i do to fix it? Some help would be appreciated
What size screw driver do u need
What screw driver do I need to use?
I found out that clicking your dpad too hard could cause it to mess up but this is a gr8 fix :)
Thank you. Just had to swap the core of a new controller with my primary that the right stick was drifting. Must have mishandled the spring a bit. Took it out and reformed it and now it's just fine. Is controller modding a viable means of income? This was a fun project.
Thanks for making this video. This controller is a colossal piece of shit. I've had to open and clean it 3 times and I always come back to this video.
My d pad left wont recognize an input about 50% of the time if i press it quickly. But when i take the dpad out and press the buttons it works every time with no problems. Is my board worn too much in the spot that the dpad strikes? Would have just bought a new one if it wasn't an elite
Great video
@ 3.12 I don't get 4 clicks only 3 do
so i assume one of the actual buttons is broken do you now how the change/fix it??
I have 2 gamepads. One perfectly functional and one with an issue.
With the functional one, if I'm in an Xbox menu navigating through tiles, if I keep pressing right it starts going easily tile by tile * tick tick tick *. The same if I press left * tick tick tick *.
With the bad one, I if keep pressing right is ok. If I keep pressing left it goes through those tiles to the left, but very very fast.
First I thought it was a spring issue, but because the behavior differs when the button is being pressed continuously the spring should not matter. Do you have any advice on what might have gone wrong?
I'm having a issue where it's even repeatedly clicking itself or doesn't do anything when i click it even after cleaning it?
Do you know if it's possible to fix a dpad that double clicks? It only happens for the down direction but it happens frequently.
Garrard I’d rather have it be that way then what I have dude just you can fix it... or you can break it even more than it already is in the process
When ever I press down on the d pad, it lags like crazy!! I need help please!
Same problem happens to me, I accidentally spilled water on it.
I have a different problem, on my depad all four of them click. but my bottom button and the right one on the depad don't work. is this fixable? please help.
Very good video! I'll try the dpad method today. Will keep you updated, if I got my issue solved.
DId you solder your issue?
QUICKDRAWMODS1 didn't solder it and didn't solve it. Unfortunately.
Looks like a bad design. Just bought a new Xbox Wireless controller and the dpad's up direction has an uneven springy click compared to the rest. Wonder if I exchange for another or replace it with Switch Pro controller.
I have the controller with the wires, so when I tried this to disassemble it to fix the D-pad, it was assembled a bit differently, didn't have the battery pack.
What kind of screwdriver did you use I can't quite tell what type to use
Mine is still working all the way around but the left direction is not clicking. I'll give this a whirl. It's a brand new controller (a replacement for a one with a bad "Y" button) so it shouldn't be dirty.
I'm defintely going to watch your full breakdown video too. Thanks for this. 😎👍
Anyone know where i could get a new ring for the d pad? I kinda have bent it wrong so the d pad wont feel right. Happily it still works but i would like to have it working right.
my d-pad clicks at each spot, but only down works... I took it apart, gently flexed the spring... with the d-pad out I can make each contact pad work, I found that each of them has an actual contact under the shiny bubble that had shifted their positions... left, up, and right would only make functional contact in the upper-right corner edge of each contact pad... weird... there's no physical way that the d-pad tabs can engage the contact pads now... I kinda think the controller maybe got hot, and the conductive adhesive or solder on the contact pads melted just slightly enough that the pad shifted a bit...
The right button on my d-pad clicks but has stopped working in game. It does not function at all. Would you know how to fix that?
my dpads button are all fine whenever i took the faceplate off, but when i put it back on the down button becomes all mushy again.. i have no idea how to fix this?
my d-pad is still not working even without the clips. since it’s defective, what should i do?
And what if it isn’t stuck or sticky but after it clicked it doesn’t react until I use all my power with 2 thumbs?
for some reason my dpad does not work in the right direction... ive dismantled it and check it all and its fine. but when i use the controller with it all apart, it works(clicking on the motherboard[green bit] underneath the dpad) perhaps its my actuall dpad not being deep enough or something i dont know
It very good video to help. I had a trouble with Dpad button got stuck down Dpad. So I took it apart recleaned it,fix the string bend it little bit. It work well. I hit like button
I bought a used one but my d pad is a bit noisy + a bit loose and springy. (Sometimes you can even hear the metal frame a bit) Is it supposed to feel like that? Should i bent the metal springs to make it feel tighter? I'm a new xbox1 user so any help would be appreciated.
too Clicky as well if you know what i mean..
I have the same problem, the dpad on the sides and the one on the top are pressed well but they don't work, and the one on the bottom doesn't hear the "click" but it's the only one that works, does anyone know what it could be?
My screen been stuck scrolling down and I went to see what it was and it was my dpad going down and my up d pad doesn’t do anything but make it where it balances everything else I need help pls
The top an right dpad on my controller has pancaked in just feels sunk, can this be fixed? Pls help ?
Do you think its possible to add the elite d-pad to the original xbox one controller?
yep... no problem there.
Thanks so much, saved me from ordering a button kit
Do you know we’re I can buy this screw and what type is it can’t find it at any store
Thanks for the vid it helped a lot! It turns out the actual plastic part of the D-Pad is worn down on mine, so i ordered a replacement part.
The plastic piece of the actual d-pad? Like the + plastic piece you press on or the the plastic sheet with the little metal clicking pieces?
@@jestes7 My plastic sheet is broken I'm pretty sure, do you know what to do or how to replace?

What screwdriver did you use to remove the screws?
T8 security bit and a t6 non security bit
Does this work for the elite controller also? My right and bottom d-pad quit functioning
IT might.... If your spring is off center or not aligned this will work for elite controller too. IF your elite controller button is defective then no.
So it is justo disassembly, clean and reassembly?
what screw driver did u use
I literally got made and throw my headset and it landed on my controller dpap at the bottom so idk if this is gonna help that
i just got a new xbox one s controller but the top and right d-pad buttons don't click but still work. will this help?
and it also feels a bit loose
Try it, can't really mess up anything.
Cristian Garcia did it worked? same problem in mine, will try that tomorrow
QUICKDRAWMODS1 hey what should I do if it doesn't click when it's all taken apart. I'm looking at the bare controller and where the d'pad should be the down on the d'pad isn't clicking
checor is controller working now because I just saw this video now and I have the same problem as you tell if it work or didn’t
what annoys me is why the fuck did they use torque screws for this pos?? Frustrating af. Needed to buy me one of those torque screw drivers.
Reason4Termination same and xbox make certain ones so tight and hard to get
Reason4Termination I used a knife and oil
Mr. Bleach dangerous business lol
Wow thanks! My bottom d pad part was sitting on top of the metal bit for some reason, so wasn't clicking.
Mine all click but on the Xbox it either skips goes up/down/left/right multiple times or doesn’t at all and I need to press again
My bottom button dpad clicks but doesn't work any idea what might be wrong?
I got every thing off and stuff but my dose won’t click, I put the spring and dose out but I don’t know what to do with it
My controller has an problem that it goes right without pressing anything its like you would hold the right d pad
What kind of screwdriver? It looks like a star or something
is there any way to get rid of this clicking noise? I hate that! Why did they made it to click. So redicilous!
Ty I make controllers and forgot this helped alot
For my controller the metal dome did not click and stayed in the down position (luckily not registering double clicks or contious down, but the dpad down did not spring back)
Problem was: The metal domes are secured by tape (revisioned controller) the tape glue did not stick to the dome and showed some bubbles around it. So I massaged the tape to stretch it and stick to the dome and then added extra tape on top to tighten it, getting back the clickback (for now).
Thx so much for this video, saved me money
My controller has like these safety screws how do i screw them open???
I'm not sure what to do I followed the steps but the bottom d pad is steal hard to press so idk what 2 do
My d pad is not working right, it clicks but....well here is what's going on. when I come to the sign in password selection screen I have the option of selecting up, down, left and right but the when selecting directions it is not recognized and instead moves a selection square all over the place not recognizing any input other than the trigger buttons.
Will this fix my controller that wont stop clicking to the right ?? my pad is just over 4 months old and i don't wont to tear it apart unless i know it will fix it
Nothing is life is Guaranteed... This is a great fix for Dpads that have shifted or the spring that sit on top of the dpad is offset. It will not fix broken buttons. THere are 5 screws and the top cover comes off and you get access to your dpad- i wouldn't call it "tearing it apart" it is a very simple open and close. This whole process should take no more than 5 mins open to close. IF it works for you, great, if it doesn't then perhaps look into having the controller warrantied. Just tell M$ you bought it about 2 months ago. because the warranty is only 90 days.
Thank you. My D-left clicks again!
Great job. Thank you for that tutoring
How the hell did you just pull the side plates off like it was nothing? Mine are like welded onto the controller with adamantium.
What kind of screw driver you use
