Trying To Learn The Shepherd's Leap (Salto del Pastor) | Quirky Customs

- The salto del pastor - ‘shepherds’ leap’ - is a traditional mode of getting around on the Canary Islands. Goat herders living in the highlands used to - and still do - use it to cross otherwise impassable terrain, mountain slopes, or ravines. A wooden pole called a garrote, several meters in length, helps them vault over obstacles. The islands’ indigenous population created the technique, which was adopted by later locals. Euromaxx reporter Ruben Kalus visited the Spanish island of Tenerife to try his hand at it.

bro was leaping like 2 feet down 😂 and scared
You should have chosen a reporter who actually works out and likes working out
For real. That guy couldn't wait to get back to his hotel
Guys😅
Way more polite than I was about to be. Glad I seen your comment before posted.
You've said it all ✊
Jeez what a wimp.
Exactly lol this guy………
@@dweuromaxx Well, really- we wanted to see it being done, not you whining to the camera.
Good for you for trying! 🙄
"Tourist man found impaled on own rented Shepherd's staff"
😅 Sure it's happened once..
Would have been more interesting with some footage of how it‘s done properly
I don't see why others are bringing up so many issues with the reporter. Yeah, the leaps are not the greatest, but the reporter is mostly there to report on a custom rather than actively learning it. It is also to say that the training area which they had seems to be restricted to the single small jump shown as opposed to the real mountain with drastically increased heights downwards (with the addition of the coach not letting him go further).
Nice video; achieved your pre-set title and expectations and that's all we should expect
Thanks, Anthony :) Indeed, our reporter was definitely 'trying out' the leap, rather than mastering it🤪
That’s dope
Would've much rather seen an actual pole Vaulter go with them and try it
Yeah, entire 6 min video and they didn’t show a single person doing it
Why didn’t you show even one example of them jumping ? Entire video about this and not a single clip if someone doing it. Also get a répéter that likes doing physical stuff this guy was a total bummer
Yeah where is the professionals
@@morescodesup2087 They were right in front of him, but, you know, his channel and all 😕
Much credit to the host for being so game to try, but safe enough to listen to his hosts. It was a beautiful visit with great people, but obviously challenging weather. Good outdoors sports men and women know when to call it a day to live to see another! 👍🙏🌈
Buen trabajo, felicidades. Gracias por la difusión de nuestras tradiciones
Hello from New Orleans Louisiana USA. My Ancestors are from the Spanish Islands... as children my brothers and I loved ❤ practicing this! Our father would teach us to traverse streams and balance ourselves. I remember going to Idaho and using a staff on a mountain for the very first time 😊. Thank you for sharing this 🙏.
That is awesome!
That's neat and all, but that terrain is perfectly walkable.
This man has an American, English and Spanish accent in one
It’s clearly German
Bonito video. Tendrás que volver y en poco tiempo, serás un buen saltador. Felicidades 👏👏
Hsve you guys considered revisiting this? I just remembered this video 2 years later since the concept of the shepherds leap is so interesting!
Lovely place, spectacular climate. Awesome unique skill featured.
You coulda made those jumps without the pole 😂😂😂
Thanks you for your visit to Gran Canaria and transmition our culture and traditions old art.
Thank you too!
Fascinating
What a great exciting leap from 2 feet lol. I've ollied higher.
You and me both!
"Trying to learn the shepherd's leap" were you expecting him to master it in same video
Would have been really cool to see someone mildly athletic who's a trekker to actually try this out and see how they do
It's fun. I tried it by making a pole using a 10' wooden curtain, and outfitted the tip with a copper plate. I was able to climb into this canyon with ease that is generally impassable!
Curtain rod
I would be scared of splinters more than dying tbh
@Pwettypwushie Just make sure to get a pair of tweezers if you plan doing it.. 😆
Que bonita nacion es españa
This was a half assed challenge
The Shepherd's Leap is notoriously difficult..!
@@dweuromaxx wow I appreciate the response. I think you could relive this leap and manage a 2m jump. Million views worthy
*sigh* books flight to Canary Islands
Dope
Anyone know where to buy one of these poles?
They are hand made and difficult to get.. You might be able to get one if you make the effort to travel to the Canary Islands yourself. 🌞⛱
Whoa man that's tough stuff
Poor baby! Wanna go home!
Lady with red head bad had the gyat
This is dope tradition but the host is unable to show it off because of his lameness
@Daniswara You think he should eat more..wait..Potaoes? 😉
You lost a subscriber.
@Yung Spam 😢😚
This was a bit anti-climatic.
Perfect video, dunno why people are hating when the reporter was reporting on the subject and culture rather than attempting to be the best at it. Earned a subscriber though!
All that guy did was jump off a 4 inch rock .. and landed like he did something …
Ive always loved the idea not the practice thougg
Am I buggin or does he sound puerto rican? 3:54
It’s literally toy story.. falling ~~
Did anyone know what type (name) of wood they use to make the staff?
@Teh Gehguan Different types of wood are used such as the wood of pine, red beech, almond, peach, eucalyptus or ash tree. It is also important from which part of the tree the staff is made.
Das ist my level, ja
Here after watching some guy go like 10ft down on one of these sticks…
Guiris being guiris....
What a waste of a trip...
If I was there I would have learned it with them. Do it as much as I could.
Have a couple of bruises and scratches to tell my story with.
That would have been worth the trip.
At the end of the day, I guess this guy did his job, and that's about it.
Really nice. But you should have chosen Gran Canaria instead of Tenerife. Gran Canaria is waaaay better in everything: amazing and more varied landscapes, beaches simple on another level than those of Tenerife, the best cultural and social life on the archipelago, the indisputable business centre of the isles as well, the best shopping... Go visit Gran Canaria next time, you'll thank me 🇮🇨🇪🇸😍👌
Thanks for the tips! Next time😜
Picado
2 years later and this reporter still sucks for this. Pathetic
It’s based on mountain goats feet believe it or not lol see
Come on guys he was a very good reported, very nice interviews. Clearly let the guys very confortable and let them talk about their culture.
As a "leaper", however, he sucked a lot lol
Haha, indeed. While he may not be the world's greatest leaper, he gave a pretty nice report :)
That lady was doing some weak as leaps
Could you do better?😜
This video was so disappointing, blocking whole channel
Did he actually do anything? Useless
Good video. Well done
Wuss
Rubbish report
Sorry 😢
@@dweuromaxx dont be sorry, be better
Too much talking and not enough leaping.
This guy is dead, what even is this
SuWU
What a wimpy reporter
