  • We've been getting a lot of questions about setting up turn signals for eBikes. Winglights are a really simple and easy to use solution for almost any bike or scooter. Let's take a look at how to install and use these bar end bike lights.

    Cool concept but so many drawbacks.
    1- Not visible in daylight.
    2- May not be visible to people behind you if your bars are narrow or you're wide.
    3- Run time is fine for commuting but not a long distance trip.
    4- Handlebar grips are soft at the ends of the bars for good reason.

    • @eBikeaholic
      @eBikeaholic  Před 3 lety +7

      yup, some good points. I had my wife drive behind me to see and they're very visible from behind with these ergo bars but yeah I'm pretty thin. They're not designed for drop bars but I suppose they would still be visible from the sides. I think the run time depends mostly on usage, since they're best for dusk / night use it probably would workout fine for long rides.
      It would definitely be nice if they were bright enough for full daylight, but they would probably need a much larger battery and larger lights. An eBike specific model that could somehow plug into the battery pack and have more robust daytime bulbs would be great. Maybe it could use 18650's that slide into the handlbars? I feel like I would still want to mostly rely on hand signals during daylight anyway though, no?

    • @michaelsprinzeles4022
      @michaelsprinzeles4022 Před 3 lety +3

      @@eBikeaholic Definitely fair points. I especially like the 18650 idea as I don't want anything depleting my range running off the main battery (silly range anxiety, I know). I have to admit that I'm sloppy about signalling locally. It seems that in NYC traffic nobody pays attention to cyclists so why bother except for other cyclists while in cycling lanes. I'm far more diligent on road trips outside the city.

    The issue I have with turn signals is being able to turn them on on while braking. When both hands are pulling the brakes, it'd be nice to have a thumb switch or something within reach. This scenario occurs when you're descending a long, fast hill and your turn is on the hill. You need to start breaking early and keep the brakes on even through the turn. No opportunity to take any hands off for turn signals

    • @eBikeaholic
      @eBikeaholic  Před 3 lety +6

      Truth, there's a reason why moto lights are setup with a thumb switch. Taping these before braking requires some foresight which we don't always get at high speed.

    Can I ask your view on single speed drivetrain? I have been told not to run my bafang 750w motor as a single speed as it will put to much strain on the motor and will destroy it. I was running a 44/14 drivetrain set up. It seemed to be working fine although I did run out of top end speed. I think the gearing topped.out and I couldn't pedal any faster therefore topped out on speed. Your view would be appreciated

    • @eBikeaholic
      @eBikeaholic  Před 3 lety +1

      I'm not sure about the BBSHD, but I ran the Bafang Ultra at 1500w with a high gear single speed setup (60/17T) for a few hundred miles with no issues. Probably the biggest risk with the BBSHD would be wearing out the nylon reduction gear, but if you're running it at 750w peak with 44/14 it'll probably be fine. Just make sure it's not getting to hot and maybe smell for melting plastic after a hard ride? I think you could also replace the reduction gear with a metal one. Otherwise I highly recommend trying the Nexus 3 IGH.

      @@eBikeaholic considering the prices of ebikes these days it should be a standard.
      Since ebikes these days specially in and around city's have become a real alternative to cars and public transport, and since the amount of ebikes in and around city's rise every year to new Heights, safety and visability is even a bigger thing.
      Putting braken disks on bikes is also more hassle for manufacturing and costs, yet a lot of higher segmented ebikes have them.
      The same with the on board displays.
      And considered that there is allready wiring to the front and back tail light it isn't that difficult to implement on the wiring harness.
      The thing is that we as customers need to make the demand.
      Because then it bevomes a selling point for a manufacturer.
