- The last time South Carolina's baseball program was looking for a new head coach, timing was something that wasn't on their side in their now well-documented pursuit of Florida Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan. However, considering the candidates athletic director Ray Tanner could be pursuing this time around, he has a potential and rare chance to get out in front of things from the outset. What potential advantages could the Gamecocks have regarding the coaches that have been linked as candidates to their open spot? In the SEC if you have a winning conference record , you are probably in the top 10. Why not hire Landon Powell and keep Monte Lee. Geographically they know the landscape, players etc. You're not going to find a better human being than Powell. He is a coaches son and a great Christian man. His dad and Tanner were friends and Powell was a batboy for NCSU when Tanner was there. He went to three college world series at SC finishing second , third , and third. He had a good career in professional baseball cut short by injuries and liver problems. He called and caught the 19th perfect game in major league baseball history. Took North Greenville College from worst to first in the conference year one. At 42 years old he is simply the perfect fit for this school. Hire him and give him any resource he requests to succeed. Powell would probably sit down with Kingston in private and ask him what he thinks some of the problems were. Retain Monte Lee. SEC coaching experience is not necessary , the right person is. Powell has been to Omaha 3 times as a player. Won a national championship at North Greenville in a short period of time. All this guy does is win. Most importantly, he loves this school like no one else will. He is also great with transfers as you have to be in baseball. Guys will gravitate to him and will want to play for him. Don't overthink this. Hire this man.

We need a fresh start, Lee is not the answer, he would be a feel good hire. Powell, no experience at power 5 level especially SEC. I think either one would be a mistake.
