  • In this video, I fit a Truma Ultrastore 10l water heater in a campervan conversion (See links below for items used). The Truma Ultrastore is a 10l water heater which is designed for campervans and caravans. The Truma ultrastore is fitted next to an external wall of the campervan so the flue can be fitted through the wall to ensure all combustion fumes are pushed out of the van for safety. The Truma ultrastore is connected to the campervan water system via John Guest semi-rigid pipe and using John Guest speed fittings. The water is fed from a Shurflo water pump via a Fiamma water accumulator to ensure a smooth flow of water. Once the Truma Ultrastore is fitted, the water is given a test fire and lovely warm water is now available in the van.

    Wow, no cutting corners in this build, running hot water what a luxury in a motorhome.

    Hi, some nice work you are doing, just one thing to note, the small pipe on the hot water outlet isn't a pressure release valve, the system pressure release valve is the drain tap, it serves two functions, like a PRV on a central heating boiler but though water can be released using the PVR on a central heating boiler it's not advised.
    The purpose of the small pipe and red union is to allow air to enter the boiler when emptying, Truma call it an Integrated Venting Valve venting air in not pressure out, allowing it to empty quicker and ensures the boiler is as empty as possible.
    There is a lightly loaded one way valve in the fitting, when water is being drained ( a similar volume of air has to enter) a slight vacuum is formed which pulls the valve off its seat to allow air in, when empty the valve returns to its seat, but can stick open occasionally and you may see a small amount of water drip from it till the water pushes it closed, very occasionally it gets totally stuck and water will pour out of it whilst filling.
    Hope this helps, hope you don't take it as criticism.
    Keep up the good work and great workmanship.

      How can you stop it discharging from the clear pipe of the hot mine is obviously stuck open

    • @evil17
      @evil17 Před rokem

      @@ronan3kiernan115my guess is pull it apart & try to free it up or replace as necessary. Alternatively you could just block or put a tap/valve on this output line & open it or a hot tap when draining tank as the pressure relief is built into the incoming drain side this would not cause an issue.

      Thanks for that explanation of how this system & valves work, this makes sense.

    I just replaced the electric heating element on my Truma Ultrastore.
    I did it in situ, but it was tucked away in a corner and one heck of a job to do.
    I wish that I had totally removed the heater and done the job on the bench.

    Really helpful video thanks! Does this just use one water pump (i.e. from the fresh tank to the heater)? Or does it need a second pump to pump out of the heater and into the sink/shower?

    Hi there . Can you remember how you fitted the cold water elbow to the boiler pipe ? Mine is leaking and I just can’t seem to work out why . Does the black o ring sit over the metal inlet pipe or down inside the blue elbow please ?

    Good job/vid, nice build, great info. How much power in watts or amps does it use on 12v dc, & how long would it take to heat up to temp roughly on 12v. TFS. Cheers

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  Před rokem

      it doesn't heat water on 12v, it used 12v for the gas ignition spark and then gas warms the water. You either use gas or 240v hook-up, there is no 12v heating option.

    how much water do they hold? or are they a mix of instant heater with some spare capacity, i have seen that the ebay gas instant ones are not very good in the uk as the incoming water is too cold to be heated enough for a hot shower at a good flow rate, so this looks more useful (basing my criticism that you need a 5kw heater in a house in summer for a shower and 10kw in winter, most gas things tend to be like 2-4kw)
    I took a domestic shower with the plug in, found i used about 12l of water, so i'm going to add a 25l hot storage tank so i have 2x a decent shower, that way as hot comes out and cold goes in i should be safe from freezing myself, then the (slow) heater can build the heat back up...

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  Před 4 lety

      They hold 10l capacity and fill while in use. It works off gas but also 240v if on hook-up. The operating manual advises to get enough for a shower, to turn the shower off while applying soap/shower gel then turning it on to rinse off or run the risk of running out.

    • @WereReallyRelayCamping
      @WereReallyRelayCamping Před 4 lety

      @@TheCampervanBuilder yes i think thats called a navy shower or something like that, some campsites have like 10 second timers so you have to punch the button every 10 seconds its so annoying... no, cant live like that lol, its like having half a shower... although if you miss every other day and have a full shower the water use will even out.....

  • @pacmania1982

    Great simple explanation video. My only comment would be you didn't seem to install a filter on the water inlet - any reasons why you didn't do this? Also, does it heat up the 10L and that's it? Like if two of us want to have a shower, do you need to wait for another 10L to heat up or is it on demand once the water is used up? Thanks!

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  Před 3 lety

      there is a filter on the water pump, no more needed than that. It is not on demand heating like a combi, if you use the full tank, you need to wait for another 10l to warm up

    • @pacmania1982
      @pacmania1982 Před 3 lety

      @@TheCampervanBuilder Great thanks for the quick reply. One last one if you don't mind, say you're off grid, can it run from 12v and gas or is it just a 240v system?

    • @TheCampervanBuilder
      @TheCampervanBuilder  Před 3 lety

      It runs off either gas or 240v

    • @trevcam6892
      @trevcam6892 Před rokem

      You have to wait. It's not on demand.
      But you can use gas and mains electric simultaneously to get a faster heat up.
      The best way to shower is to get wet then turn off the tap, soap up, and then rinse by turning the tap on again. It's not nice if you leave the water running then have to rinse the soap off with icy water. Once covered in soap you're pretty much committed.
      As the saying goes-
      First wash from your head down as far as possible.
      Then wash up from your feet as far as possible.
      Finally wash your possible.
