After being diagnosed with scoliosis, patients are often concerned with figuring out what would be the best treatment approach for their scoliosis. However, there is a wide array of treatments available for each unique case of scoliosis.
Some aspects to consider are patient size, age, curve location, and scoliosis cause. Based on these and the needs that having scoliosis brings, each patient should have a unique, customized treatment plan based on what they present and how each curve is progressing.
There are two main basic treatment approaches for scoliosis:
    Traditional
    Conservative
The best treatment approach is often the one that aligns with each patient's expectations.
Traditional scoliosis treatment doesn't involve much treatment until patients reach surgical thresholds. This makes the traditional approach a reactive form of treatment, basically reacting to the progression or severity of a patient's curve before taking action.
This will often lead patients to undergoing spinal fusion surgery. This can often be frustrating for patients, knowing they allowed their scoliosis to reach surgical levels before looking for alternate treatments.
Traditional bracing is another option, but it remains with many shortfalls when it comes to successfully treating scoliosis. These braces are only used on patients still growing, like adolescents in a rapid-growing stage. The most commonly used is a squeezing style brace called the Boston Brace. Its main is to slow scoliosis progression, not to offer correction. This brace causes compliance issues because as curves grow larger, they cause more pain and could contribute to spinal deviations such as rib arch deformities.
The other method used in traditional scoliosis treatment is spinal fusion. It is highly invasive, leading to loss of mobility and range of motion and loss of function of the spine itself, which makes this a non-functional approach that will not preserve spinal integrity and movement.
On the other hand, the conservative treatment approach aims to conserve all function and movement of the spine. Proactive treatment is encouraged rather than waiting to see if a curve will progress and becomes severe.
With our conservative proactive approach at the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we aim to see patients' curve decrease and avoid surgical levels rather than stall as the traditional treatment method does.
The conservative treatment approach is multimodal. Here at our center, this includes structured chiropractic care, scoliosis in-office therapy and rehabilitation, customized at-home exercises, and customized corrective bracing. This combination of treatments reduces the curves, increases strength, and provides positive changes for our patients.
Another aspect is patients receiving fragmented conservative scoliosis programs, which will not get the best results because ideally, all the different techniques should be working together, but they do not unless coordinated to do so. For chiropractic care and other forms of treatment to work, these all need to be scoliosis specific.
Scoliosis conservative bracing, or ScoliBrace as part of the conservative treatment, adapts to the patient's body and becomes easier to wear over time as the spine improves.
At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we focus on a conservative treatment approach, treated by one doctor and one team, where everything is done in unison to provide the most coordinated and multifaceted scoliosis care for better patient results.
