Hey, friends! I've been wanting to make an emergency meals video with shelf stable ingredients from Aldi, and finally got around to it! These aren't the most amazing meals ever, but they would get us through in a pinch! These are also easy for me to share with others, and they would come in handy if I'm ever indisposed and Daniel has to whip up something for dinner! Lots of uses for these little emergency meals, I hope you find this helpful! :)
Really like these ideas 💝 My 5yr old is sitting with me and saw the cheese soup with rice & carrots and said it looked so good! 💝 In these times we are in we need shelf stable food meal options. Thank you for making some videos with good yummy ideas
I have a tip for you and these shelf stable meals. For milk needed in these recipes: Use 5 Tablespoons of coffee creamer , the plain not flavored and 1 cup of water; I use warm water to mix the creamer in, then measure the amount needed and you have the milk needed. It works in any dish that needs milk. It even works in can soup. I use the store brand of creamer. Just thought this would be helpful as you don’t have to try to store the evaporated milk once opened and it works.
I love the way you put all the ingredients for a meal in a Ziploc bag so that you don’t have to think about what you’re gonna do you just pull it out and cook. Seems like we always have a hard time knowing what we’re going to fix for dinner, and I’m sure it would be even worse in an emergency situation.
My mom’s tuna casserole was: 1 blue box Mac and cheese prepared as box directions. Add in 1 can of tuna, some peas, crushed potato chips and cheese on top and bake until chips browned. Had it almost every Friday night (no meat on Friday Catholic)😀
I found an amazing alternative for tuna casserole several years ago. The deluxe mac/cheese prepared, add can condensed cream/mush soup, and can of drained boneless skinless salmon. The rest isn't shelf stable but add half cup each milk and shredded cheddar, mix together add to greased casserole top with bread crumbs and dot with butter. Bake at 350 for 25 minutes
I make 1 blue box plus tuna but I just add a heaping soup spoon of sour cream at the end to make mine different. My favorite growing up was a boxed dry mix called Noodles Romanoff with a can of tuna added to it. My parents had each of us three kids cook one night a week, one night for mom and one for dad, one for pizza and one night where everyone pitched in and we got fancy. These days you should hear me and my siblings argue over the best way to make our old favorites since over the years we've changed them all.
To make the equivalent of 1 can of condensed soup I use 1 cup milk (could use evaporated or dry powder equivalent) 3 Tbsp flour 1 Tbsp butter or olive oil 1 tsp bouillon (could use a cube or granules) plus any seasoning you would like. Bring all to a boil whisking frequently, reduce heat and simmer until thickened.
@@kaelynnmartin6521 I found this recipe when my family had to eat gluten free several years ago. I used sweet rice flour in place of all purpose flour to make it GF, the texture and taste was a lot better than what was available at the time, not to mention much cheaper.
Thanks for being a calming presence during this challenging time. The continuously rising costs are real, and predicted to get worse, so these ideas are so helpful. I appreciate shelf stabIe meals since we live in Texas and saw how incredibly helpful they can be during tough times like what happened to us last year. I don't think you need to apologize and say they are not the best meals ever!!! They are usually tasty in addition to being inexpensive and have a comfort food feel, while including veggies. To me, in these budget times, that does make for a best meal ever. Thank you!
Thank you so much for making these videos!! I work for a group home and it’s mandatory that we have a disaster bin. We were able to put that into use when our floor was being replaced. (We called it camping out to keep the individuals anxiety down, and even made s’mores in the microwave/ was not the same). While we supplemented with fresh items, it was tricky to put meals together. I’m completely revamping the bin after seeing these ideas, thank you!!
Not bagging on tuna packed in water at all, just adding a random comment: using the tuna that is packed in oil will count more towards bringing up your good cholesterol numbers than tuna packed in water. At least that’s what my doctor told me LOL. Love this latest batch of recipes, thank you for sharing! 👍
I like this series. The one thing I do in addition to the bags is mark the closest expiration date on the bag so I know when things need to be used. Good vid
This is straight up genius. I never would have ever thought to put this in a bag in the back of the pantry to keep for maybe an emergency or just a super busy day. Brilliant.
The pepperoni spaghetti suggestion you gave while shopping is a FANTASTIC meal. We all love it! I like to add drained mushrooms and top it with Parmesan- also shelf stable.
Options for the noodles and rice. You can try separating the bags into the amounts you might need and then store them with the meal kits. You can also do this with dry beans.
I love when you do these videos! The idea of using shelf stable ingredients to create emergency meals with only a heat source is incredibly useful! I also love the idea of putting these together for neighbors or my local food pantry. Thank you so much! 🌻
a year late but those microwaveable rice pouches are also easy to do in a pot of water. I've done those on the stove or even in my camping canteen. Just add water, boil up and add the pouch. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes to make sure its warmed through. Add some meat and canned veggies. Done.
My husband and I just went to Aldi's for the first time in years and we loved it! It's not the kind of place you go to for all your grocery needs but the extra stop to get staples for the prices they offer is so worth it.
I would absolutely love to see more of these videos! I think they are great for emergencies, very busy times, and even for new parents or college students who don't have the time or energy to create meals that take too much "doing." Thank you for all of the recipes and ideas!
I buy the Bear Creek soups. I add 1 can of Sweet Sue chicken and dumplings to the chicken noodle soup mix and it’s a family favorite!! Feeds my husband and myself plus our 2 teenagers. It’s shelf stable and ready for a lazy cooking night in minutes!
My tuna casserole is always a box of mac & cheese with a can of tuna folded in. I eat half for supper and the other as breakfast if I'm being lazy or for lunch and it's so good. Thanks for all of your ideas, Blessings y'all!
It occurs to me that it would be VERY handy to have a parabolic solar cooker on hand for these meals, since you mentioned hurricane preparedness and power outages go hand in hand with those
Great ideas! After being stuck in the deep freeze with rolling black outs last winter my daughter said we should have something ready and this fits. The ready rice, you can actually heat it up on Blackstone griddle (RV people use it) or on a grill if you have a pan. So just an idea in case you have an electric stove and power is out, you can just heat it on the grills with propane.
This is the video I've been waiting for!! Over the past few years I've been altering some of our favorite recipes to use shelf shelf stable ingredients only, just in case. But I don't have that many. Looking forward to trying yours!
Great video and presentation! You do a great job articulating the basics. Being bright and cheery like you sure doesn't hurt either.😉 God bless all here.
It is so good to see water poured into jars or cans to get them cleaned out Because my mom did that and it gets everything Cleaned out. Waste not want not
I can my own versions of some of these, one favorite here is canned no-bean chili over fried canned potatoes with a sprinkle of cheese (could use Parmesan or cheddar flavor popcorn topping).
These are great! I love these ideas. We currently have no stove, just a countertop convection oven, only a small refrigerator, a crockpot, and only bottled water. I have to be creative and use ready pasta and the ready rice a lot for our meals.
I made the rice dish today and it was pretty good for how simple it was! I just wanted to come back here and warn others that part of the yellow color of the soup mix apparently comes from turmeric… which I didn’t realize until it stained the counter highlighter yellow. So be careful, everyone, if you buy that soup mix!
You might like to add fideo to your shelf stable dinner meals. Fideo is super inexpensive (You've purchased the Moderna brand pasta from Walmart, they make fideo noodles too.. basically cut up thin spaghetti for about 30 cents), a little 8oz can of tomato sauce (I splurge for the Goya spanish style because they add seasonings to the sauce. I stock up when it's around 35 cents or less but lately has been just over 50 cents per can in my area). Olive oil, spices like onion powder, garlic powder, mexican oregano (seriously add this to your pantry if you make mexican dishes) cumin, pepper if you want, chicken bouillon, an onion and some garlic if you've got it.. if not the powder works fine. It's also good with cheese if you have it available. Brown the noodles in a little splash of olive oil. Add 2c. water and bouillon and tomato sauce. Add all the other spices and cook for 15 minutes covered or until the pasta looks done. You can also add in canned chicken if you want. I add chopped onion and let it cook for just a few minutes because I like it crunchy but other people sautee the onion while the pasta is cooking. You can also add in diced tomato, and some people even add potato. Great for a cheap college student meal or an emergency meal.
thanks again for another great vid... we make the egg noodle/tuna w/some variation here - 2/3 bag extra wide egg noodles, one can cream of mushroom, one large can drained tuna, one can drained petite peas, and a spoon or two of mayo to increase creaminess - just open and drain all the things, heat your noodles till done and mix and serve! - while they cook, just blend everything else together - drain your noodles, and then add to the mixed canned goods - then stir in mayo and spices to taste and desired creaminess.. we eat it warm on the first night and then its a cold side salad for sandwiches or as a cold leftover meal for lunch the next day.. we call it Tuna-Pea Wiggle!!! YUMMMMM
We eat vegan a few times a week. Lentils and rice, three bean salad with a dinner roll, Meatless chili, macaroni and beans. I make a big pot of bean soup with macaroni, too. Tina
I am about 1 minute in but just wanted to say, I love this idea for a video. I live in Florida and we get hurricanes, it's a thing. Sometimes we don't have power for week or weeks so this is amazing and I'm definitely saving this in case I need it.
i love these videos! i definitely have modified a few of your ideas for my hurricane stash, and i would LOVE to see a version of emergency meatless/vegetarian meals specifically! just to be a little more creative than my combining a ready-starch with a can of veggies. either way, love these ideas!
I love these ideas !!! I bought a disposable type chafing casserole dish set and a used fondue and small ceramic fondue all use canned oil. So those items and a box of canned oil etc are ready with my shelf stable food items and dehydrated foods and stocked water supply !!! I'm case of a few days of no electricity . Also for grab n go in an emergency situation there are just my husband and I as we are seniors but it includes for sharing with family and people in need
Love these videos, going to start adding a few of these shelf stable meals to my pantry! It struck me as interesting during this video that it seems everyone's tuna noodle casserole is always so different. I have had several people's and they are just always made completely differently. The one we make has peas and believe it or not miracle whip, and shredded cheese on top with potato chips and then baked. But I've had some that like yours is more of a cheesy mixture without the peas. Anyway, I just thought that was interesting and it made me wonder why/how the same name and idea of a dish can be so different.
Ooo, I’m going to try that broccoli soup dish. Thanks for doing these. I see those types of ingredients at my Aldi and I don’t know what to do with them. I appreciate the inspiration!
Another idea for milk is the shelf stable milk! We live really remotely and so always have some on hand because we can’t pop to the store to get milk for the kids. Parmalaat is the brand my Walmart has
I alway keep powdered milk and buttermilk on hand and prefer that when in a pinch, so easy and really cheap to use, so stable, especially here in hurricane country.
I like these ideas. My mom made tuna casserole with a box of Mac and cheese, can of cream of mushroom, can of tuna( when they were 7 or 8 oz. Today you would need two cans). She made the Mac and cheese just like the box then added everything else. It was really good and I made for years for my kids too.
Loved all of these ideas! My aldi keeps their version of velveeta in stock next to the salsa and tortilla chips year-round but I bet yours was just sold out at that moment 😁 that tuna casserole is calling to me with some peas in it!
Great video...a few of the items at Aldi I never noticed but will definitely be looking for on my next trip there. In my local $Tree stores (I'm in Northern NJ) they sell Velveeta in 10 oz./12 oz. sized pouches. Just wanted to mention so you can look for it on your next visit. Hugs & blessings to ya 🙋🏾♀️
Love ur videos!! I would have never thought of these ideas. I'm so used to cooking with items in my freezer/refrigerator. I will be thinking more along these lines from now on. Thanks again!
1st time viewer. So glad I found you! I'm going to look back on your older videos on other shelf stable meals. I think these can work ANY time - especially when you haven't really meal planned. Just grab and go to town.
Very nice shopping trip to watch! I love Aldi! I enjoyed seeing all the goodies you were able to find. I’m adding a few of these to my things to my shopping list. I just started making shopping walkthrough shopping videos. I feel like We can learn a lot from each other. I like this style of video. I was curious if you could share any tips you may have for filming in the store? You presentation is lovely. I’d love to learn about good deals from each other.
I have made a tuna casserole using g the cheapest box of Mac n cheese. You fix it according to package directions, add in cream of mushroom soup, can tuna, sometimes I add canned sweet peas. If I have onion I might saute that and add it or put it in fresh. Super cheap and easy.
So, we did macaroni & cheese in the box with tuna, which is basically the same. For tuna casserole (quick), Mom layered crushed potato chips, tuna, and "cream of" soup (celery, mushroom or chicken), ending with the chips on top. Not healthy, but great for emergencies or college kids! Plus, it's just really a heat&eat item ... microwave or oven!
You can buy velveeta cheese sauce individual pouches. Comes in a box of 3 4oz pouches. I find it at dollar general. It would work for the tuna casserole. I also use it on nachos
Great ideas! I did laugh when you called the evap milk condensed because I always do that! But I’m 100% sure you used evaporated and not sweetened condensed milk! LOVE these videos!
I like buying the tetra packs of milk to keep in the cupboard. You can find them in the Latin foods section in most grocery stores. I also like keeping the little, individual-serving tetra packs of Horizon organic whole milk in the cupboard. I don't cook with it all that often, and the individual servings mean none is wasted. Also, Trader Joe's sells tetra packs of heavy whipping cream, just FYI.
Thank you for these videos. I've actually out together a little cabinet with self stable Meals. I do a pasta dish with blended can soups, and shelf stable Parmesan cheese..after the pasta is cooked I combine everything in an oven safe dish and bake.
I bought the same blanket a few days ago and love it., so lightweight yet snuggly so perfect for FL winters! And the soft fall colors, great buy for just $5
This is a great idea. I've been meaning to plan some shelf stable meals, especially after the freeze we had last year. Thankfully we never lost power but all my friends and family in the city did. Hopefully we dont experience that again this February. 🙃

Mindy Mom, Julia Pacheco and Frugal Fit Mom are all the best channels right now.
I agree 100%
My quick go to is a chicken chili.
2 cans of northern beans
1 jar salsa
1 can of chicken breast
Top with cheese and sour cream.

I just saw it in my Aldi yesterday.

Loved all of these ideas! My aldi keeps their version of velveeta in stock next to the salsa and tortilla chips year-round but I bet yours was just sold out at that moment 😁 that tuna casserole is calling to me with some peas in it!
Mine too. I was happy when I discovered it. In my Aldi it is 1/2 the price of Velveeta. Velveeta is 7.99 in local grocery stores.
Good idea. Velveeta 👏in pouch. Yes. At DT!
They do carry their own brand of Velveeta but ours hasn't had it since June
Love ur videos!! I would have never thought of these ideas. I'm so used to cooking with items in my freezer/refrigerator. I will be thinking more along these lines from now on. Thanks again!
1st time viewer. So glad I found you! I'm going to look back on your older videos on other shelf stable meals. I think these can work ANY time - especially when you haven't really meal planned. Just grab and go to town.
Love these meals videos thanks ❤😊
I love this idea! I'm going to have a think on some ideas with food we eat and make up some bags for our pantry.
Thanks so much for sharing!
Love your channel! Thanks for being real and practical.
Thanks for the kind words, Amy!
I have the same sweater!
Genius!!
I would love to know what kind of toboggan you are wearing. I love it!
You could use the smaller cans of table cream instead of evaporated milk. Those are very good!
This was a fabulous video and so helpful. You have such a gift for thinking creatively about putting meals together. Thank you!!!
Great ideas Mindy, thanks for sharing!
"If you want something soup-er quick".
Can't unhear the unintended pun.
Great ideas. I'm inspired by your video. Been slowly stocking throughout this yucky time.
Definitely trying your tuna noodle! I think I'll add some California mixed veggies in there. Sounds like comfort food on a cold night, tonight!
Great ideas! I did laugh when you called the evap milk condensed because I always do that! But I’m 100% sure you used evaporated and not sweetened condensed milk! LOVE these videos!
I have dehydrated broccoli to add to that soup. yummy
Nothing wrong with one of moms classics! Yumm! I switched the tuna for chicken and my stars, it was the bomb diggity!!
And the soft fall colors, great buy for just $5
I totally agree!
I loved this video and learn so much from you thank you for your hard work in producing it.
This is a great idea. I've been meaning to plan some shelf stable meals, especially after the freeze we had last year. Thankfully we never lost power but all my friends and family in the city did.
Hopefully we dont experience that again this February. 🙃
Such great ideas! Can't wait to put my packages together.
Love these ideas. Trying to assemble them in one place...lol. thanks for sharing
The chefs cupboard potato soups was good with added microwave/baked potato and some cheese.
