Mindy shows us the hauls and the recipes and sometimes shows her family's honest opinions. I love that! Okay, rant over. Lol. This channel is definitely in my top 5 that I watch all the time. 🥰

When I was younger I was too proud to take any kind of assistance even though I had four children of my own and took in two other children who just wanted a family and stability. I would do my shopping after work while my children slept. I menu planned based on what was most nutritional and on sale. I always had a stocked pantry and freezer and made everything from dinner to snacks. Fruits and veggies were a must. Now that my children are grown I see them doing the very things I did for their families and can't tell you how proud I am. And I also believe that making your children the absolute priority helps. I might not have had a new car or iPhone, but I raised beautiful people and you can't put a price on that.

    • @scarleigh6849

You could definitely get box cake, a container of frosting, some vegetable oil and eggs (for the cake mix) for about $5.75 at Walmart and still have some oil and 3-4 eggs left over for something else. You could also go non-traditional and get a box of no-bake cheesecake for less than $3.
Or you could spend around $11.50 at Walmart to get all the ingredients for cake and frosting. This may actually be better because you’d have plenty of leftover flour (can use to make bread, pasta, combine with spices for breading/coating, pancakes, rolls, etc) butter, milk and sugar to use in other recipes as well as leftover eggs, imitation vanilla and baking powder thus getting more for your money.
If you wanted to go a step further and have a party or just have a meal with the cake you could use the leftover flour, butter, eggs, and milk to make pancakes and eggs for breakfast and only spend $1.33 for pancake syrup.
Or use the leftover flour and some Italian seasoning to make pizza dough then make a pepperoni pizza with only $5.62 in additional ingredients (Italian seasoning, pepperoni, mozzarella cheese).
You could make hamburger buns with the flour as well then do slider burgers for around $8.70 including toppings like cheese, tomatoes, lettuce, and onion.
You could also make your own flour tortillas and do tacos. Meat, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and lettuce would run around $8.50 and you’d have leftover ingredients to use for something else.
Some places will get you a free meal or item on your birthday as well (ex. Starbucks does a free drink, Buffalo Wild Wings does a free order of snack size wings and any sauce, lots of sub places will give you a free sub around your birthday, etc).

@@scarleigh6849 I'd hope I had some real butter in the house (I always do) and at least make the icing from scratch. That tub stuff is terribly inedible. For chocolate cake, add about 1/4 cocoa powder to cake mix if u have it...really upgrades the cake enormously. Thank god we have several grocery outlets that are way cheaper than Walmart. Walmart's not really good prices...just slightly lower prices for way inferior products.

    • @amiegamble1678
      @amiegamble1678 Před 2 lety +3

If your Walmart has a soda machine, you could get a can of their brand and a box cake mix(cola for chocolate, lemon lime for light cake mix.) You can use powdered sugar and a bit of milk to make a drizzle. This especially goes well if you use a greased/flowered bundt pan. Works well w muffins too. I usually have cake and ice cream for my kid. We don't have super fancy birthdays.

I do understand growing up without, as an adult I’ve be blessed, once a month I make a post in my community Facebook page for a random box of food, I alway included at least chicken, beef, or a protein of some kind….this week month I will include a Turkey. Some veggies, pasta of some kind and a few snacks, enough to feed 4 people two balanced meals…..I never meat the person, I put it in a cooler next to my garage door at the time we arrange. I expect nothing back, I know how it feels to be hungry. If in communication with the party I often pick up that there is a child or children..I then add something special for them, crayons and a coloring book, a book to read, just something just for them.

We couldn't get onions in my area for over a month. I purchased the container of dry minced onion for .88 at Walmart. If you soak them in some hot water, you can used them like chopped fresh onion. It also helps shave some off the budget because the container is equal to a small bag of onions. A 2 pound bag is currently$2.88 at my store so a savings of $2!

Some are not cheaper than fresh per se, but save me in availability and save me from vegetables going bad (the worst money offender in my home). Cost me quite a bit upfront actually, but I love that I'm never out of what I need and that I'm no longer throwing certain foods away.

I am sure there are people that have no budget for there groceries and just buy whatever they want but most families with children are looking to stretch the food budget to be able to stay on budget for as long as possible with the food prices continuing to rise not all meals need to be perfectly balanced unless you have dietary restrictions. Tonight for dinner I made homemade chicken noodle soup with grilled cheese sandwiches which basically I am making the soup using leftover chicken leftover vegetables half an onion and noodles and bouillon the grilled cheese sandwiches good old kraft singles between bread to dip into the soup. As long as it fills the bellies and everyone is happy that's all that matters. Love these video's Mindy.

I can't believe people hate on these videos. Shame on the trolls! Mindy to speak to your inflation commets I noticed in Iowa canned tomatoes seemed to have gone up 20 to 40 cents a can a crossed the board even at Walmart so we feel it in the midwest for sure on all kinds of things. I think your approach to cooking smarter, not harder by "beefing up" some pre made foods ehen in a bind is great. Something my mother did and taught us to do as we grew up. Thanks for the content!

You can jazz them up with whatever ingredients you might have if you want to make an omelette. It's a great way to use up leftover veggies, that last little bit of cheese in a package or some leftover meat from dinner last night.

I'm really sorry that you get nasty comments about your budget challenges. Yours have consistently been the least offensive, the most well rounded and probably the most nutritious videos I've seen.
I have seen a LOT, some that feed a family of many (I don't want to call anyone out on your channel) on foods that are NOT nutritious, not well rounded, not concerned about long term eating habits or family health. One I saw literally fed a large family on sugar, carbs and junk! I nearly screamed at my screen when I viewed it!
You always make sure to point viewers in the right direction, reminding them to check local support services if they're in dire situations. I really appreciate that you do this. So many just don't know where to turn, who they can contact, how to reach out and your videos takes this into consideration and have always been conscious of the very real problem in this country with food instability and food deserts.
    Thank you.
