- Get Smart starred Don Adams as Max Smart and Barbara Feldon as his sultry sidekick Agent 99. It was also one of Mel Brook's first comedic offerings to the small screen. Max AKA Agent 86 works with a US counter-intelligence agency known as CONTROL which is constantly at odds with the sinister organization KAOS that is hellbent on sowing the seeds of discord in the world. The show focuses on the duo taking down bad guys and defending the world from various threats.
The show ran during the height of the Cold War. Don't leave out all the GENIUS comedic timing brought in every episode by guest stars and famous & especially no-name cameo actors. They made the show work. Ed Platt, Ms. Feldman, and Don Adams were the baseline, the foundation the show had as a constant. It was the ever changing talent that were the jewels that made it sparkle.

One of my favorite gags ... "NOT THE CRAW !! ... THE CRAW"
TRY AGAIN. That’s “Not Craw… Craw!”. And it didn’t matter WHAT Adams and Feldon did, if they did it as Control agents 86 and 99. No matter what, they were PERFECT TOGETHER! And they needed Andy Dick like a manhole-cover as pocket change. How about NOT AT ALL? EVER? It’s tough enough to get laughs when you want them in Prime Time, laugh tracks notwithstanding. The absolute last thing ANYONE needs is a complete IDIOT chewing the scenery and screwing up a carefully crafted scene! Do you really think the Writers and Producers took an attitude of, “Well, let’s just throw it all at the wall, one take at a time, and see what sticks? OF COURSE THEY DIDN’T! There was just too much money and too little time at stake for them to take an attitude like THAT! And fools like Andy Dick lived up to their names and screwed the whole thing up anyway. The Principal Players had already proven THEY could do it right, with lord-knows-how-many episodes of the original “Get Smart” series to their credit! And although you don’t normally hear a lot of crazy things like flutter-toungueing on saxophones (mostly because it’s quite difficult to do), the Get Smart band does things like this on occasion because IT SOUNDS FUNNY! It’s just one more little thing that adds to the over-the-top humor of the ORIGINAL SHOW, and made that kind of humor so difficult to reach on ANY kind of regular basis on the subsequent shows.
Me and a couple of buddies still say that sometimes.

Here in the Bay Area, we have one of those local PBS sponsorship ads done by "George Craw of the Craw Law Group". Yes, I mumble it to myself every night. Me, when it comes to inappropriate Get Smart gags, I'm a sucker for Leadside.
Richard, that line still makes me laugh out loud, literally, almost 60 years after I first saw the episode. But Ed is correct. The line is “Not craw… CRAW!” There is no "the."
I remember it as "Not the CLAW, the CRAW!!
Don Adams agreed to be paid a reduced salary in exchange for syndication royalties. That decision paid off big time!
Don was offered $12,000 per episode or $4,000 plus royalties.
Always go for royalties.

Who wasn't in love with Barbara Feldon? So many young heated memories from when I was young and she was slaying it. Don Adams was genius especially in that role. Great show!
One great segment in the FOX series is the had Max's son meet Zigfreid's daughter. The son griped he grew up thinking his father was a greeting card salesman (his cover). Zigfreid's daughter commented she thought her dad was a doctor on a cruise ship.
Great reference to Bernie's later role on The Love Boat.

The chemistry between character really made the show work Max's bumbling heroics, 99 trying really hard to get Max to notice she was a girl, the Chief and his constant headaches add to that some very well choreographed action sequences and coherent storytelling and you have classic
How he could have failed to notice that she was a girl, and an extraordinarily attractive one, is an absolute mystery. One could easily have been led to believe that Smart was gay.
Siegfried was the best! I met Bernie Kopell at an autograph show. He signed my picture “Herr Rob, Dis is KAOS. Ve don’t Shush here”

Absolutely my favorite character. I was 7 or 8 yrs old and still the Siegfried episodes were my standout favs.
I know its strange, but when I was little, I refused to believe he was also the Doc on The Love Boat!

That Sunbeam was a Sunbeam 'Tiger'. A production car that sported a small block V-8... 289c.i., I believe. A kick ass little car!!
Most were 260s, the Mustang market initially consumed all of the available 289s, so the Brits were left with 260s that were more available.
My dad had one, which had the 260 in it. A spunky little car from what I was told. A 4 speed, with a long first gear (55mph). Top speed at about 125.
The Sunbeam Tiger started life as the Sunbeam Alpine. It was decided to fit the small-block Ford motor primarily for the American market, and yes, is was a kick-ass little car! Out-handled anything built in the USA, as they still hadn't worked out how to make suspension that worked properly. Still haven't, look at the Chrysler 300C. Looks great, handles like a marshmallow. Unfortunately it was killed off when Chrysler bought Rootes Group, and they did not have a V8 engine that would fit the Tiger. There was absolutely no way that a Chrysler product was going to be sold with a Ford engine, so that was the end of it. Very sad! And yes, I totally fancied agent 99. Beautiful and very clever, how could anyone resist!

This show will always be hilarious. Easily the funniest show of my childhood, maybe even all time. I have been laughing at this sitcom since I was a child in the early to mid 1980's.

@@FactsVerse Well, now that you mention it, there seem to be very many sitcoms that disappeared and I would like to know what happened. My Sister Sam was another favourite show. It aired on CBS in the early to mid 1980's, I think for three seasons. It came right before Newhart, I think. Then, it just stopped. The younger actress was murdered by a stalker, but, I have no idea what happened to the rest of the cast, if it is available for streaming, etc. Any "forgotten" shows like that, or, Stark Raving Mad, Good Morning Miami, etc.
I watched it the whole time when it actually came out. I was in grade school and jr. high. I knew nothing about 007 or other spy movies that it was doing satire of. Kind of like the first time I watched Blazing Saddles. I hadn't watched hardly any Westerns that it made fun of but laughed hysterically anyway. I still quote this show frequently. Probably the most is"missed it by THAT much."
Still one of my favorite shows of all time. I still use many of the lines on a daily basis.

If I'm not mistaken, Don Adams was also the voice of Tennessee Tuxedo. For some reason I don't ever remember seeing Inspector Gadget on Saturday mornings but I do remember seeing Tennessee Tuxedo, along with Mr. Peabody, Bugs Bunny, Yogi Bear, Rocky and Bullwinkle and all the rest. As I outgrew cartoons I got hooked on the great comedy shows of the 1960s. Get Smart was always my favorite of the lot.

I have always liked the Bumbling mannerisms of Maxwell smart, agent 86, his humour always put a smile on my face.
I had a crush on Agent 99 too. She was irresistible, even for us girls. Yeah, I loved Don Adams' comedic timing, but I watched the show for Barbara Feldon. She had a very nice singing voice as well. I remember her singing, Look What They've Done To My Song.

As far as I know, Buck Henry was MUCH more involved in the show than Mel Brooks was. But he tends to get overlooked. I'm not really sure if Brooks was involved past the pilot episode, while Buck Henry was producer for the first 2 seasons. After he left, they went thru 3 DIFFERENT producers in season 3, the show somewhat changing styles as it went. The first 2 of those, they seemed to completely forget 86 & 99 were romantically involved ever since the pilot. The last set of producers in season 3, who stayed until the end, got the romance back on track over a series of stories. First, in the 2-parter with Don Rickles, they played up 99 getting annoyed that Max has been ignoring her. Then, they did the story where she left Control to get married... except, he turned out to be... "A KAOS agent? I knew he was a lier and a crook-- but, a SPY??" And soon after they were shown for the first time going out on a date together.
I love how in the "GET SMART AGAIN" reunion movie, they'd been married for 20 years and their kids were in college. That went completely against the grain for most 80s sitcoms.
He also hosted ' The Don Adams Screen Test", which was one of the first reality shows. It was a hoot! By the way, the Chief had a name; it was Thaddeus.

Siegfried, who was almost as dumb as Max was, was delightfully played by Bernie Koppell. He went on to play Doc in The Love Boat.
@@nicoleknight9412 Bernie Kopell was also a regular on "THAT GIRL". The story I read was, NOBODY working on that show realized he was occasionally moonlighting on "GET SMART" at the same time.
As a kid, I loved & laughed at the show; thanks Mel & Buck. I agree with the comment about Dick Gautier as Hymie the robot. Dead-pan delivery of funny lines. But there were so many who made the show click!
Love this program. I loved 86 from the get go. But still wished the program was still aired on tv. Thanks for one of the best show to have on tv.

I have fond memories of watching this iconic show as a kid. I bought the DVD set and am going to rewatch the entire series. Get Smart was ahead of its time, and I am blown away by Barbara Feldon's beauty, brains, and charm! Btw, I thought the "Get Smart" movie starring Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway was pretty good too--better than the movie with Adams and Feldon. Too bad it wasn't enough to launch another reboot attempt.

I loved watching reruns of this show as a kid. Loved it. I remember watching Inspector Gadget one day and realized the voice was the same. I thought I found out something astonishing and astronomical.

I remember when I was a kid in the 60's in my room hearing my dad roaring with laughter downstairs watching Get Smart. it was past my bedtime but my brother and I would sneak 1/2 way down the stairs to get a glimpse of what he was watching. Now, as an old man myself, I have 5 seasons of the show on DVD and roar with laughter just as my dad would. Siegfried, Hymie, the Chief, Larabee, Agent 13... there were so many great characters i can't even begin to name them all. But above all, above Don Adams' perfect comedic timing and delivery, Barbara Feldon's exquisite reactions to the idiocy surrounding her and the unique gadgets they used and encountered, the writing was so much better than anything we get nowadays. Lose the laugh track and you have a practically perfect comedic exercise.

I met the "chief" at a local parade in Riverside, California in 1969. He was on a car in the parade and then he watched the rest of the parade after that. He was friendly

Now with all my aches and pains and body starting to fall apart, I realize that I really am old. It definitely does suck because in my mind, I feel like I should only be in my 30’s at the oldest. A great show with great writing, eg Tom Bosley’s appearance and great visuals, eg Max and the revolving door.
It was and still is my absolute favorite program of any kind. Don Adams was fantastic as was Barbara Feldon and the two made a great couple. I wish something like this was still around. The world sadly lacks this sort of comic genius that the brilliant Mel Brooks and Buck Henry developed.

Don Adams' career accomplishments always seem to leave out being the voice of the pretty iconic cartoon character "Tennessee Tuxedo" on the Underdog Show! I've only seen one comment here about it, too!
In the mid 80s Adams was on a Canadian sitcom called Check It Out! based on the UK sitcom Tripper’s Day. Set in a supermarket with Adams playing the manager.
Check It Out also ran on the USA Cable Network in the U.S.

I loved Get Smart . I saw Mel on Carson one night. I remember distinctly Mel Brooks saying that KAOS was "Kill All Other Spies" and CONTROL was something like "Can Only Nitwits Try Rewarding Others Lives" . The list of famous guest stars is in the hundreds.
I LOVED! this show!
Younger people won't understand how popular the TV and Film 'Spy Craze' truly was. Espionage stories, series and films sprung up everywhere ranging from R-rated violent dramas to cartoons for children. 'Get Smart' was the first and best 'Spy Send Up'. The original concept by Buck Henry and Mel Brooks was pure comedic genius which, in other hands, could have easily been an embarrassing flop.
Not many TV sitcoms, that ran for a mere 5 years, had the impact of significantly changing and adding to the English language where ever it was spoken.
"Missed it by that much", "would you believe...", "And loving it!" and others were used in everyday, casual conversation for around 20 years; in fact, older people these days can still be heard referring to Max's catch phrases when they get together.
(Obviously, Max's catch phrases were translated into other languages but I have no idea if they were as popular or long lasting.)
Finally, I hate to break it to you, Facts Verse, but all 13 "Top-Secret" facts from this show were, and are still, well known to millions of fans... would you believe 11?

You forgot Control/Kaos was taken from The man from Uncle, Uncle/Thrush. I was kid or the 60's.
I could picture Tom Poston as Max but I do agree on Don Adams being cast He nailed it.
"Get Smart" was a certifiable classic.
1. Though addressed as Max, Agent 86 is always referred to as Maxwell Smart (even by Max himself). 2. 99's alias in the episode "99 Loses Control" is Susan Hilton, not Sarah or Saran, or whatever you said.

First, her code name was Susan Hilton, not Saran. 2nd, the Mustang belonged to the Chief. 3rd, KAOS is a Delaware corporation for tax purposes.
KAOS is also called "the international organization of evil" in many of the early episodes. It was incorporated in Delaware for tax purposes, but that was only a front.

My parents watched this show on Nick at Nite all the time when I was a little boy so I got a good dose of it as it became one of my favorite shows of all time although it predates me by twenty years
Don Adams's vocal delivery in Get Smart was a very accurate imitation of William Powell's vocal delivery in the Thin Man series of the Thirties and Forties. For skeptics, if listening to both does not convince you, Don Adams stated that fact in interviews. It was part of his stand-up act, which included impressions.

I met Barbara Feldon at the 2019 Sydney Supanova. At that time, 99 was 86! At the same convention were Dawn Wells (Mary Ann, Gillians Island; R.I.P.) and Barbara Eden (Jeannie, I Dream of Jeannie). How could I have imagined at the time these shows aired that I'd meet them all (at the same place & time)?

You forgot that he served during WW2 in the South Pacific Campaign at Guadalcanal. He served in the First Marines. He suffered horribly with his fellow Marines battling not only the Japanese but dysentery, malaria, and dengue fever.

Back in the 1950's Barbara Feldon got her start by doing commercials, namely Brylcreem, "Just a dab will do you."
I watched the show mainly because of "Agent 99" She is hot !.
She was in the Dick Van Dyke movie "Fitzwilly".

Wasn't he Maxwell Smart? I thought others called him Max while he referred himself as Maxwell.
The narrator keeps saying "Max Smart". No one addressed him like that. His friends (the chief and 99) would call him Max (no last name), his enemies would call him Maxwell Smart (both first and last name) No one ever said Max Smart!

Barbara Feldon was a model before getting on the show.
Don Adams was actually doing comic bumbling spy skits before the Get Smart series.
They used current events and wrote them into the episodes. One such thing is the 3rd spy network ACB, around about that time the ABC was the 3rd TV station.

I recall an episode with Dr. Yes & all his henchmen/women being from different countries all replying "yes" in their native languages: "Yawol!" "Oui!" "Da!" "Sí!"
I seem to recall one episode where 99 was referred to as Susan. It's been a long time. But I watched the show religiously. Always funny.

My dad literally had several VHS tapes full of Get Smart episodes that he’d recorded. I could often get I’m his good graces when I would record episodes for him and cut the commercials. I liked it as a kid but loved it as a teen and even till now. It was my Dads show like mine odds South Park
