- Jokes about flying cars and jetpacks are a common thing in America and these jokes find their origin in the 1962-animated sitcom The Jetsons. The show aired from September 23, 1962, to September 22, 1963, and was never renewed for a second season. Even then, The Jetsons played a crucial role in defining the way Americans think of the future as well as their expectations of technology. It wouldn't be wrong to say that The Jetsons is one of the most important and defining pieces of 21st-century futurism.
The Jetsons narrates the story of an upper-middle-class family residing in Orbit City. George Jetson is a Digital Index Operator and his wife, Jane, is a homemaker. The couple lives in their Skypad apartment with their teenage daughter Judy and son Elroy. The family has a dog named Astra and a robot maid named Rosie. The show did not only deliver relevant humor but also became popular for its imaginative space-age living. It's easy to fall in love with a world where domestic tasks are performed by robots, ozone-scrapping homes groom and dress their inhabitants, and people use spaceships to commute. The Jetsons raised America's hopes for the future.
At the time it first appeared on TV screens, many critics were quick to dismiss The Jetsons as just another cartoon. However, over the years, the show has had a profound impact on the way we think of the future. Though the show ran for a single season, its influence has been immense. After its premiere run, the show continued on ABC, CBS, and NBC for years. Between 1985 and 1987, many new episodes were produced for syndication. Unfortunately, in 1989, George O' Hanlon, who served as the voice of George Jetson on the show, passed away, and thereafter, no new shows were produced. The series finale came in 1990, in the form of a film titled Jetsons: The Movie. 27 years later, a direct-to-video animated movie titled Jetsons & WWE: Robo-WrestleMania! released and witnessed mediocre success.
The Jetsons may not be as funny as The Flinstones, but they provided good humor and elicited many laughs. While The Flintstones explored an era that was already well known and understood, The Jetsons forayed into unknown territory and used creative imagination to create a world that was unseen and unknown. Great animation, innovative ideas, and an absolutely fantastic theme make this show memorable in every way. In this video, we go into the future with The Jetsons and tell you ten interesting facts you didn't know about the show. Make sure to subscribe to Facts Verse!

Great bunch of facts! I loved the Jetsons. Our family saw it in color in Los Angeles when it first came out. My little sister used to cry at the end of the episodes, when George was caught on the dog walker, yelling for Jane to “stop this crazy thing!”. You see, that was our dad, George O’Hanlon.
Very much enjoyed reading everyone’s comments. Dad would have loved them, too.
George O’Hanlon, Jr.
That was your dad? Wow! He was brilliant as George Jetson, even in the 1990 movie (looking back, I can see that it [and possibly the 80s revival] was inferior to the 1960s TV series, but I don't agree with what people say regarding his age and health catching up with him and causing a decline in his performance[even if it did cause a bit of decline, people don't have the right to judge him harshly for that, he had no control over these things, nobody does] while recording for the movie, he was good in that too! Him and Mel Blanc)
I can totally see why you're proud of him 💚💜
Thank you for chiming in on this tribute, Mr. O’Hanlon, Jr! It would be great to meet you at some point in the future, unlikely though it may be. All the best to you from Minnesota!
So cool. I still have my movie ticker from 1990 when my dad took me to see the move in Phenix City, AL
No one would have been a better George Jetson. Penny Singleton was perfect, too.
I just recently discovered something your Dad did that I now LOVE.....Joe McDoakes!!!!
The big thing that this video fails to mention is that in fact there was a Jetsons movie released in 1990. It brought in about $20.3 million, five dollars of that being my money.
Yeah i was wondering why they didn't mention it
@Larry Shackle So therefore, what percentage of the movie's overall revenue did you cover? 😉
@@papagreenemusic According to my iPhone calculator that would be .000025%.😀😀😀
@@shackdaddy7106 lol...
You deserve 1 share of stock in the movie!
@@papagreenemusic In fact I own one share of Spacely Space Sprockets, the company that George Jetson worked for. That share of stock should be worth a lot in the year 2365.
Here’s another little known fact for you: Astro, who was the family dog of the Jetsons was a direct descendent of Scooby Doo. “I ruv you Rorge!”😀😀😀
What I always wondered was “If they do everything in the sky, what’s on the ground?”
They are a billion feet in the sky, so they probably dont know what's on the ground.
U could see some good stories showing their camping in the woods and many more below in comic book Gold Key.
The ground is polluted from war and garbage...plus it's where the minorities live, seeing as only Caucasians are seen in the show.
Man, that's nott only dark, but racist and sexist too, as all the women stay home and can't drive.
The ground was for bums, mostly. I think the episode "The Flying Suit" showed the suit falling to the ground and being taken by a bum.
In my version of a Live action Jetsons it canonizes Thru the World building of the backstory for the Jetsons in this (in my version of a live action Jetsons/Jetsons live-action reboot) here it is
It will be revealed that the world of the Jetsons takes place that the Jetsons live in was created through WW3 that lasted from 2062 till 2070 and it takes place 699 years after it ended & Orbit city and the other floating buildings and floating cities were built by the survivors of WW3 Who retreated into the first few floating cities and buildings and space stations and space ships that were built & orbit city and floating buildings and cities became a home away from home for humanity to survive but the plot twist will reveal that the eye is the true cause of the Third World war after it turned sentient and declare war on humanity and in the aftermath of the Third World War it took control of the human race after a trick them and a large chunk of the Milky Way and it’s up to the Jetsons to defeat the Eye save the Milky Way
It’s interesting you mention The Jetsons being cancelled due to being a color cartoon in a black and white world. When I was growing up, all we had were black and white TVs. The show I watched most was The Flintstones. I still remember the day I finally saw it in color in the eighties. It blew me away!
This guy does not know what he is talking about. Take it from someone who saw the show when it was new. It was television history, and I saw it the first time.
Weren't there several color cartoons around that Time Period? Rocky & Bullwinkle, Looney Tunes, Tom And Jerry, Hanna Barbera. It wasn't just The Jetsons, you know.
Termites C Aardvark Yes, absolutely. That’s why saying The Jetsons was canceled due to its color format is pure B.S..
Termites C Aardwolf Sorry, got your name wrong. My bad 🙃😜
You were lucky. My older siblings “watched” television through the windows into the neighbor’s house. My dad was a snob and was holding out. When he finally bought one he was hooked. It was the center of evening entertainment. As time went on we begged our dad for color. He said we would when PBS went color. Fat chance! We only got two stations.
Got lucky when I was a kid to enjoy it every Saturday morning
Why does the robot 🤖 emoji look like the robot on the Jetson’s? She better be getting her paycheck! LoL
I’m sad that The Jetsons was cancelled. I loved this cartoon show. 💜🥺
Yet the Flintstones, which was also in color, lasted six years.
It did well on reruns on Saturday mornings, then it finally got revived in 1985 for new episodes that aired five times a week on broadcast syndication. However, the new episodes were different from the original prime-time season.
"JETSON, YOU'RRRRRREEEEEE FIRED!" always cracks me up. Mr. Spacely is so comical. Same goes for the rest of these great characters.
It would be funny when he would fire George and then something would happen to make him realize he needs George back, and he would rehire him.
I noticed Mr Spacely has a hitler-stash. 😳
Never saw it as a child.
That's my only good Mel Blanc imitation. I shake my jowls as I say it.

Sorta like a cartoon version of Al Bundy handing Peggy money and she takes the wallet.

The Robot Chicken spoof of this was HILARIOUS...
I wonder how much George intended to give Jane. It must not have been much considering she took the wallet instead.

While this was an interesting nine minutes, "10 Facts Why" is totally BS. And the ONE reason given was "the show was produced in color and there weren't enough color TV sets in America at the time"??? Bah, get outta town! Even Ruff and Reddy was in color!!!
Doc Doccus So was The Flintstones, and it began two years earlier.
First he says viewership and ratings were up and then that it was a lack of color sets that caused its cancellation. How does this make any sense? If the numbers are up it tells you that people didn’t care if it was in b&w. For us EVERYTHING was in b&w anyway because we didn’t have a color set. We watched Bonanza and World of Disney in b&w ( both “transmitted In Living Color”) because they were good shows and we enjoyed them, even in b&w. They managed to stay on the air in spite of the lack of color sets, in Bonanza’s case for 14 seasons.
Being a teenager when the show debuted, no one in my circle of friends had a color TV and if they did, they watched "Walt Disney's Wonderful World of Color" at the same 7:30 pm eastern time slot. Disney already had a large audience before The Jetsons premiered. Ironically, ABC owned Disneyland when it opened in 1955 but Disneyland moved their show to NBC because all NBC affiliates could show it in color. Made sense because NBC was owned by RCA, the only company making color sets back then since their patent had yet to run out. Also, The Jetsons had no continuing, week to week sponsor. Many times you would hear "The Jetsons...brought to you by ABC where you can see (name of a popular ABC prime time show). In the advertising business that was known as "unsold spots" which meant no guaranteed revenue stream for the show. Also The Jetsons had to vision to introduce other gadgets we take for granted now: The "Visaphone" used in episode 1 is now today's FaceTime/Skype/ZOOM. Students' grades were on a cassette, called "TeleTape" played on a home player, while the compact cassette was not introduced until 1964. Their flat screen TV was known as the "Televiewer" which George used to tune in the news much like we tune into CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, etc. Lektronimo, their apartment approved, nuclear powered dog is reincarnated by Sony as a $3000 robotic dog.
I have to agree on the color issue. Many TV shows in the 50's produced color episodes, such as "The Adventures of Superman", predicting that color TVs would be the next step in TV evolution. Hanna Barbera even produced color episodes of "The Flintstones" before 1966, the year that television networks stopped broadcasting in B/W...
Yes, RUFF N' REDDY went to color broadcasts in the September return in 1958. It premiered in December 1957 in black and white.
You forgot the Jane Jetson face mask that she puts on to look presentable when on a video call. Today Zoom has an editing feature that lets you tweak your appearance so that your skin looks smoother and younger and you look more radiant when you're on a Zoom video call.
J Smith more like the Americans copying the Chinese ✌️😁
yes I think of that everytime I do a zoom call! Would love a clip of that.
The Jetsons actually went back into production from 1985-87, creating new episodes for syndication. But, for my money, the "Classic 24" are far better than the newer ones.
Was the 'Viva Las Venus' episode taken out of rotation for encouraging gambling?
That's a tough call if season 1 of The Jetsons was better then the season 2 & 3 of The Jetsons. Cause remember, Taft Broadcasting, which was Hanna-Barbera's parent company back in 1985 got The Jetsons back on the air. Even though season 1 was ok, season 2 & 3 were a little bit better.
Yes I remember them, I just posted a comment about Orbitty, they were terrible, the originals were great, the 80s ones were just cringeworthy, sorry to any 80s kids who liked the newer versions.

Big time
I grew up in Downey, CA and remember that McDonald's. Also had a neighbor who was Sound Effects editor for Hanna-Barbera, and he asked my Dad (who was a computer designer) to record some "futuristic" sounds for a new show in development - The Jetsons. Rosie the Robot and the Food-a-rackacycle were some of the more often used FX my Dad and I recorded for the show.
you and your dad did great work!
I used to love watching the Jetsons. It is one of my favourite cartoons of all time. I can still remember what all their voices sounded like to this day. Elroy had a very distinct voice.
There was something so great about the sounds, the music & that futuristic but wholesome feeling.

In 1962 we had two television sets, both black and white.
So back in 1973, Hanna-Barbera had tried to resurrect the Jetsons like they did with the Flintstones a couple years back for the 1974-75 season, and revamp it to make it a lot more like the Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm Show with Elroy as a teenager this time, but due to creative differences with CBS's then-president Fred Silverman, they decided to make an animated version of The Partridge Family instead, and that's how Partridge Family 2200 AD came into existence.

Good point, Gitana!
To us Boomers who were "cartoon watching age" when the Jetsons aired, their dog Astro's: "Rut roh, Rorge" is what we use as a signal that something is about ready to "hit the fan"...
This Boomer also used Scooby-Doo's line “rot roe Shaggy!” quite often, like earlier today, and yesterday, couple days before that...
Told my mom on the phone last week “Danger Will Robinson! Danger!”.
Only having 4 TV channels had all of us using the same quotes. (For youngsters it was ABC, CBS, NBC, & PBS.) I remember having to explain that to a 21 year old kid at work. He didn't understand how I had so much in common with a guy my age that grew up in Puerto Rico. Told him whether it was the island, or the peninsula (FLA), there was 4 channels, and rock and roll went around the world. So when I walked in and said “Luzy I'm home!” in my best Desi Arnaz imitation, the guy answered like Lucy. We had the oldies radio station on, I'm on one end of the aisle of the stock room, PR is on the far end, and during “Hotel California” we were facing away from each other, both playing air guitar. The 21 year old says “do you guys even know your both doing the same thing?”. I turned look at PR, and said “I'm playing base, what are you doing?”, he said “I'm playing lead.”, so I turned to the kid and said “No, we're not doing the same thing. I'd be playing air drums, but I lost my sticks.”. Poor kid thought those old people have lost their minds...
That is the best part of being this old, people your age all speak the same quotes and cliches. We have a common thread holding us together, the same culture, no matter where you are from. So many TV shows made in the USA got translated and shown around the world. I just wish they would syndicate more of the shows we grew up with and play them again. Anybody else want to watch Captain Kangaroo again? But with your grandkids this time.

Very Odd there was NO Mention of "Jetsons, The Movie" from 1990 . When he was on the topic of a potential Jetsons Movie I kept waiting for it to be mentioned.
The Jetson's also predicted tunnel carpel syndrome. George Jetson's finger would get tired of pressing buttons and he would have pain in his index finger.
I couldn't believe that the Jetsons only ran for one season until I came across the set around 1998 or so. I could have sworn that it ran for at least 3 seasons! Thank goodness for reruns!
Most people (including me) thought the show's original network run was longer. I think most people think it ran longer is because has been playing in reruns (both on the network & in syndication) for decades.
Yes, because Hanna Barbera revived the series in 1985 and made new episodes then and in 1987 for a five times a week broadcast syndication run. It took some years before it was really fully embraced by the public, mostly by children.

Ted Nugent stole the theme's melody for "Cat Scratch Fever."
One time my cat got scared of some dogs while I was carrying her. She clawed and bit me to get away. Later that night I got sick, my hand swole up to 3x it's normal thickness and I got a high fever. Cat scratch fever is a real thing!
Just because the intro has four notes, and Cat Scratch Fever is four syllables, does not mean Nugent stole the melody, especially when they aren't even the same notes, and pretty much nothing else about the two tunes are anything like each other.

Actually, there was a planned updated Jetsons series in the mid 70s which would star an adult Judy and a college aged Elroy however, for one reason or another, that concept never made it to fruition and we got instead The Partridge Family 2200 A.D.
Only 1 season, no time to grow older. Sad.
I just thought the Jetsons creation idea was from just taking the idea of the Flintstones and flipping it to a family in the future. The idea of Kayne west being a director for a movie makes me cringe
That's what I always thought - changing the setting from prehistoric past to space age future.
Something like that
It would've lasted longer if they have a Barney Rubble counterpart (the closest they had to a Barney Rubble expy was Henry Orbit who was the building superintendent of Skypad Apartments).
It would be awesome to finally see a live action Jetsons movie!!! Or even a live sitcom?
Danny DeVito as Cosmo Spacely it only makes sense! Tim Allen as George, voice over for astro. Bryce Dallas Howard playing Jane, Meg Donnelly as Judy, Joel Dawson as Elroy. Just a few thoughts 😊 Loved watching it as a kid. Saturday mornings were the best.
Yeah but I think Jetsons the movie should’ve been a live action movie and should’ve been released in 1996 here’s what the cast should look like if it was live action & released in 1996

Judy Jetson-Reese Witherspoon
Mr. spacely-Bob Hoskins
Rosie-Sigourney Weaver

It was aired on the Cartoon Network in the 1990's and early 2000's. Today, Artificial intelligence could be used to recreate and multiply the original voices of the original voice actors (that are no longer with us) to create new episodes from the classic series of the cartoons.
I want to see The Jetsons back on tv, so the younger generation can enjoy it too!
It is back on TV on ME-TV on Sunday mornings locally in Buffalo,NY WBBZ Ch.67
@@wnychevy09 Thank you for the update!
I was one of the lucky ones to only have known it in color I had no idea it was in black and white born and raised in Chicago.i feel so privileged
They really need to go forward with making a live action movie of The Jetsons. They did the Flintstones, why not The Jetsons. I would love to see the space car and other robotical invention from the show in 3D.
Do we Need a Jetsons live action movie/Live action jetsons absolutely!
Thx. It blew my mind that they made so few episodes. Now I know why.
I miss The Jetsons .. as well as all other classic cartoons on Saturday mornings, they were the best!!
These cartoons today truly sux.
The first episode, the one where they picked Rosie, was one of my favorites.
I loved the show and would se it whenever it was on tv.
For anyone trying to recreate the show, all I can say is try your luck. Somethings just cant be reproduced and have the same impact as the original. When you step outside the original mold, you've changed the very thing that made the show so attractive to an audience.
I don’t think that The Jetsons from the past would be able to be a success in this time because it never had any other races in the cartoon. I remember a saying that went around years ago, which I won’t repeat out of respect, that said awful things about other races. If it was made in this time, it would need to be open about all different kinds of people. Thank you Facts Verse for another wonderful walk down memory lane 👍
I totally agree, it was for the privileged cast Culture as Oprah now calls us
Betsy Ross2.0 it figures that she would say something like that. But yet she wants to say that she isn’t racist! When I was a kid and watching The Jetsons, I didn’t know anything better about it being all white characters in the show. I didn’t even know anything about racism until my parents explained it to me when I was about 13 years old. Thank you so much for your reply 🥀
Thank you
D'Vorah Jackson you’re so very welcome 🥀
what's even worse,,, the prehistoric Flintstones no people of color now that's animation
'The Jetsons' foreshadowed 'Skype', 'Zoom' and 'FaceTime' with the TV phone.
Wow,luve this show. And cartoons. They really dont make any great ones anymore.
The Jetsons and the Flintstones are both of my favorite cartoons. One is about the future and the other one stone age, my number 1 is the Flintstones. But it doesn't mean I love the Jetsons less. I am going to be 54 in December 2020.
I love the jetsons it was entertaining and it was a great show
I'm 64...miss being a kid in the 60's
@@rosesmith3948 I'm 53 and I loved the show
Flying cars are a _bad_ idea. The engine goes out, and you're in a ton of falling glass and steel. And jetpacks will burn your butt off.
yeah we are in 2020 how come were don't have what the Jestson have.
I mean i push a button some things in my house not every thing.
Facts Verse, good video. Brings back fond memories. Do Who did the voice of Astro the Jetson's dog? Thanks.
Scooby-Doo. They were the same dog.
First to Watch
They also predicted green Mohawks for teenage boys 20 years before they happened.
I don't want to see a "new" Jetsons because it would undoubtedly be "woke".
same with a live version, short of the flying cars, I could just go to Wal*Mart...or Meijer's Fifty Acres
Yes, Judy and Elroy would be nonbinary.
Duck landes I think they should absolutely make a Jetsons live action movie/live action jetsons!
Given how there have been a lot of shows that have been revived (G.I.Joe, My Little Pony, TMNT, Batman, Scooby-Doo, Smurfs, He-Man, you get the idea) I honestly think reviving the Jetsons in a new light might be a good move. Times have changed a lot since the 90s and new generations are unaware of how awesome this show was to us who grew up on it.
😆😆😆😆😆
For syndication, additional episodes were created from 1985-1987.
Moving sidewalks first appeared at Chicago's World Fair in 1893...
