    Video landed in the right timing. I am servicing a set o pedals I recovered from an abandoned bike. They are cheap MTB pedals. The steel balls are corroded. They won't be perfect but enough for a basic city bike for supermarket visits... etc.

    Oh them shin rippers! I've rehabbed vintage pedals. I find it to be a meditative activity. But I end up putting them in my parts bin and run modern flat pedals anyway.

    Nice job!
    I wanted to do something similar a month ago, but I found out that some ultra cheap pedals come with no bearings, just an axle and two "washers" that hold the plastic body. Gave them some ptfe grease nonetheless, now they are a bit less draggy

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Před 8 dny

      Haha wow ! Just washers , hope they spun alright 👍

      @@garysprojects not at all lol, but the pedals are the last problem of that bike, the bb needs replacement (or maybe maintenance, it wouldn't surprise me to find a non-sealed one), but the chain guard has some stuck bolts and even one of the pedals doesn't want to move, plus the tires are very dried out.
      The only good thing is that it has a front basket so sometimes i go to the supermarket with it 😂 (best workout ever, the bad bb makes me feel any hill or flat like climbing a vertical wall)

      @@claudiofiero8523 haha looks like it has a lot of stuff to fix, but like you said, makes a great exercise bike!! 🤣

    I've done this couple of times once even with pedals still on a bike end it's pretty easy if you have good sticky grease so it can hold ball-bearings in place

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Před 9 dny +1

      Wow interesting, never tried that myself , would worry the balls would go everywhere when you take it off haha

    Hey Gary, do you have any tips on how to get into restoring bikes? I’m planning on getting a 90s MTB as it’s the easiest to fix but I just don’t know where to look for info as it seems to be really complex. Is there a book that you could recommend or websites? Or will your videos be enough? Love you content and greetings from Germany!!!

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Před 5 dny

      cheers mate i appreciate that ! i honestly just learn all my stuff online, if you watch some of my restoration videos you should be able to get a good sense of it - i show the problems i go through & tips on the way as i build a bike. anything else i just look up on youtube or google haha. just get stuck into it and you will be learning in no time!

    I've run into the same problem, several times, where you just can't get a socket over that damn nut. Finally I ground down, nearly flat, the jaws of some cheapy needle nose pliers. The pliers are now too weak for anything but grasping pedal innards. Like my bikes this method is ugly but effective,

    • @garysprojects
      @garysprojects  Před 7 dny

      Nice ! That’s cool. Yeah what’s with the nut , do they make some sort of special socket tool just for pedals !?
