FIXING Major Traffic Problems!! |Cities Skylines - Real Town Planner plays | Ep 15

- So I tried several town planning methods but it really took me a while to figure out the best solution for these specific problem areas... but hey, at least I figured it out in the end.
My designs come from my experience as a Town Planner IRL and from in-game experience.

That reallyyyy took me a long time to build.. well actually trying all the other techniques first took up all the time. Hope you enjoy :)
we got the same intersections in christchurch where the pedestrians all get to cross at the lights at once, it works really well.
Red is traffic usage not congestion.
The only thing your intersection design needs is a scramble crossing for peds.
i think it's with the snowfall addon.
its a infinite intersection
Your traffic problems are obvious.
The vehicles are all driving on the wrong side of the roads! ! ! ! !
HaHaHaHaHaHaHa
Seriously, you showed some great solutions.
+BackSeatJunkie good one 😂😭
Nah left side all the way
TG Leviathan Where'd you find that? More countries drive on the right than the left from what I've read, a lot more. Most of the countries that drive on the left today were previously controlled British territories and colonies. There's only about 15-20 countries that drive on the left compared to the 100+ that drive on the right.
Whenever I think about the differences between road directions my mind always imagines a highway between the two countries where cars have to swerve to the other side quickly and are constantly trying to avoid head on collisions.
EbuCallinav the eurotunnel works with a criss cross intersection :p
Anyone else who whatches cities skylines videos and is like "man i whant to play now" *goes into cities skylines and build something shit* "man i suck at this game"
This was exactly me when I first started watching these videos
Moto_Nerd Same but after 5 city attempts, I think I have a pretty viable setup that doesn't look messy XD
After 3 city attempts, I was pretty good at making the suburban areas but I really had troubles making a city centre which is compact and the traffic was just not moving in the main roads since people need the main road to travel to the city centre and industrial estates :/
I only bought the game a week ago though so my city isn't even that large yet. I might have to restart once I find a major problem again like I did with my other 4 attempts.
Me irl
thats me!
I play on Xbox, I don't think I can even control traffic lights...
This is cool and all but imagine how terrifying this intersection would be in real life
Probably a part of why these sorts of more efficient interchanges are rarely attempted in real life. They need to be navigable by slow, distracted human beings who are generally very poor at operating machines at high velocities and making split second decisions. Now, fully automated urban traffic networks... there is a wealth of improvement waiting to be unlocked if autonomous vehicles ever get perfected.
its a reality everywhere in california. even the highways are usually at a standstill too lmao
@@saikou1490 It's that way in Seattle, too. Because all you guys moved up here. Horrible traffic. We have one season - construction. Also the 2nd highest gas taxes in America and the 2nd worst roads in the America.
@@julia-6195 all you guys? i live in vegas lmao. hawaiians and californians are moving out here too...it aint so bad here yet but construction is really common place. one day ill be stressing out about traffic like i stressed out when i drove in cali...but not yet haha. i get really irritated about the traffic here in vegas and its not even so bad lol
Ha, this is I love middle of nowhere kansas... (Wichita) Don't have to worry about traffic, except construction on Kellogg, ha it's nonstop
Who else finds it EXTREMELY satisfying to fix traffic in this game?
Me. I dont fix traffic's on my city.... I just add another way to the cars to get out but it changes cause the traffic now is on my new made road. I suck at fixing traffic😂
life hack xD
best part of the game imo
+KilrCde134 I recommend you looking up the term "Braess paradox" :)
Yeah, but if only the vanilla driving AI wasn't so awfully retarded.
I think some people who play this game forget that traffic is a natural problem in cities. A lot of people create these amazing traffic free cities, but they're unrealistic. I really enjoyed this video man, a solution a real city council would choose, one that doesn't fix all the traffic, just the major problems.
Yeah i have seen so many cities with a lot of tunnels and sky highways between 2 housing rows all over the place that are really unrealistic. Some people already hate seeing cars standing on a traffic light and i cant see why.
I once made a city using massive elevated pedestrian paths that allowed you to walk down ramps onto every single street in the city. Pedestrian traffic in the sky was incredible, with no stopping for any roads along the way to slow them down. Cims really like to walk.
twitertaker I hate to see cars lining up at traffic stops because it cause backups on surrounding roads, blocks emergency vehicles, and causes issues with delivery to businesses and causes major problems at industrial areas.
Yeah but that happens in real life too. Emergency Vehicles can use the tram line lane in the game. If it backup to surronding roads, your intersections are too near too each other. I personally play C:S for the reality factor, not to build the perfect city where noone has to stop ever on a intersection.
It's a problem in some cities and in some countries. Many European cities(also big ones) get easily with almost no traffic in cities. There are ways to create cities with very low traffic IRL as there're in games(banning traffic in cities is also a thing at least in Europe so nothing unrealistic in doing so in Cities Skylines)
38% traffic flow?!? Jesus! Not even my city of 170k has ever had traffic that bad! Along with improved road networks (which you did in this video anyway) why not add in some more public transport such as buses? The public housing estate especially could use some if it alone has a population of over 2000 people.
Yup. THat was going to be my suggestion: more transportation options!
LESS TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS!
All roads in City pedestrian-only roads. Let's see them jam traffic now.
Maybe he is american style Town Planner?
>Destroy public transport
>Maximise use of cars
>Make walking around city safely near impossible
=Profit
Sounds like Sam is pulling a Robert Moses; demolishing half the city just to put a freeway in the middle of it. While he's at it he should demolish the remaining part of the city with public housing towers all in the name of 'urban renewal.'
Idk, I built a city of 115k people, and it had a traffic flow of 79%. That might be because I only use 1-way roads except when necessary
The problem at 11:07 where the cars only go through the intersection a few at a time is caused by the proximity of the intersections. The traffic is set not to block an intersection, so the game only sends enough cars to fill the small gap before the next intersection. Since the traffic exiting the highway shouldn't have to stop once they are through the intersection, you could use traffic manager to turn of the due not block intersection rule. (it is under intersection or junction restrictions, and can be done per street)
You created a SPUI
Single Point Urban Interchange.
Or an Infinity Interchange
While I agree Single Point Diamond Interchange is a better name, SPUI is a one that stuck.
Adam Pagenkopf im glad they widened the beltline
If it's not in an urban area, they are SPIs, not SPUI's.

The best part of Cities Skylines is to find the best solution when the traffic gone bad.
I always set myself a challenge when rebuilding roads to some how not delete existing roads until the new ones are finished, like real life.
I always try to give industrial areas their own highway connections plus train and ship connections and try to built instead of 1 big industrial area rather several small areas. The major cause of traffic problems are in my experience often trucks of the industrial areas who traversing with traffic of the other city parts. And I see a lot of trucks among your traffic jam so maybe a better separation of those industrial parts would help you to prevent those big traffic issues for the future.
Yeah, I always make sure there's a highway connection / train station AT my industrial areas
a roundabout would have worked with much less hasle, just saying!
roundabouts only work with moderate amounts of traffic. here there was not enough space and a volume of traffic a little bit too high. A large interchange like the A127/m25 with traffic lights would work but there is not enough space.
Bobby Williams can confirm. I've tried roundabouts for situations similar to this before and wound up with pretty disastrous results XD It was awful.
there are 4 major roundabouts towards the center of my real life city. all of them are intense traffic bottlenecks and get huge jams every other day. one of them has traffic lights on it now. believe it or not it has improved the flow 5 fold.
roundabouts SUCK
Actually he could have gotten rid of the traffic by doing a second bridge, making them both one way. Doing the tunnel for those who don't care about crossing and then as traffic is divided using 2 roundabouts.
Sure, seems more complex but better than the nightmarish lane in each lane.
I have a good roundabout with shortcut for the lazy AI car use my city road to get to the other high way. If Anyone want to see it.
Gmail me: buinhatanh1234@gmail.com
Write this world in the title so I know that you want to see my roundabout :" -Name youtube- From youtube, want to see picture [or video (may cause lag)]. When I see your gmail, I will send you a picture or a video.
I love u r layout at the star it looks so real and random, there's just something about it
You should allow left turns from the off ramp when the cars from the bridge get to go, it wont interfere with them at all.
I see you never used turn-specific lights, you might not know how. You just need to press change mode until you get the lights you need! It's really useful!
traffic flow 65%...and i'm getting paranoid when it's below 85% ;D
25k citezens and so many bridges and huge intersections o.O
Such small city should easily work with even one bridge one lane both side(for each crossing from "island" to "island"as there are multiple). As well "standard" and roundabouts for most part.
Good point! However, as the city grows you need to bulldoze most of the roads as they cannot handle that amount of traffic...
The lane control mod is amazing. I once used it to make two major roads combine onto a 6-lane (one way) short road so that three lanes came in from each side, they got a chance to change lanes, then it went out in 3 different directions (two lanes each). Turned a major congestion into a stop-free intersection.
i have an obsession if building roads for traffic to build up then sorting it,i live it its a stress reliever c:
At the main junction, when setting the timed lights, set the light mode to where it has separate left turn lights and straight lights, so that you can let the offramps have a green left while the cross road is going. That will allow a smooth, constant flow of traffic in the left turn lane to get all those cars out of the way.
One trick in Cities: Skylines when using TMPE is don't copy the timings of real world traffic lights. I usually use a 4-16 second timed traffic light for main roads, and 4-8 for the less busy ones in an intersection. The reason is so that the traffic doesn't get enough time to build up on any side. You want them flowing ASAP, and 4 (min)-16 (max) are values I've found to have the best balance. The timed traffic lights are very smart and will adjust to the actual traffic flow. I feel like in the game, 20 seconds is too long even for major intersections.
And yeah, building up public transport will really cut down on car usage, which will reduce traffic.
There's something they do in my country I don't see here, which would really help, namely an on/off green light on the right side. Since turning right from the right-most lane doesn't interfere much with the rest of the traffic, it allows people trying to make such turn, to do so, as if they were behind a STOP sign, during a phase when a red light is preventing them from going forward or turning left.
The turning lanes on the second intersection kind of work on the same principle, but they do take up more space.
I had pretty bad traffic in one of my cities before, my city is grid based and the main road led straight to a roundabout that itself had a lot of traffic. What I did to fix this was create a sort of onramp and offramp for the roundabout onto the main road as well as I added timed traffic lights along the entire length of the main road leading out and into the city so that cars could go nonstop from one end of the road to the other pretty quickly. Took that area from a solid red to light yellow green for the most part.
Small tip to solve the weird behavior at the end there: Use the lane tools and force the cars to stay in the lanes. You can use it on strait sections aswell, not only in intersections.
I have a question concerning the lane you talked about at 5:20. Could you make it so that it is always green aside from the pedestrian cross time? It is a left turning lane that doesn't intersect with any other lane and it goes into a dedicated lane that no other lanes merge into. For all intents and purposes, couldn't those two lanes be considered their own "street"?
I do that sometimes on my own games, it works "sometimes". The issue is that when they want to connect to the highway, the two lanes could choose the same highway lane. It's still fixable through the Lane Connector Mod, but they WILL do that lane fusion at one point nevertheless.
Bobby_Go, yes, the Traffic President mod allows you to change the mode of the traffic lights, so you can have one which is dedicated to traffic turning in one direction, or separate lights for every single direction if you so wish (and even one to separate traffic from trams, which is very cool!) I use it all the time at junctions where there's no conflict and it really helps things flow. I also use it when I want a major road to take a sharp turn, but the automatic lights want to bring in a minor road facing the main one.
You have a district called "public housing" hahahahaha amazing
I've had success with decreasing highway traffic, especially with damn 2 lane merging from trucks, by downgrading the highway to a 2 lane rather than the vanilla 3 lane roads. Obviously this forces the vehicles who wish to merge left or right to stay left or right rather than skipping in front of cars going down the middle lane of the 3 lane road highway. I think tho, like the intersection where you put a tunnel under it...it's good to have a 3 lane road since there are 3 directions to turn as you've prioritized certain lanes for certain directions.
I do my timed lights the same way and it works great. Only difference is I only give pedestrians about 2 seconds, they don't really need more than that.
"You gotta sprint Grandma, leave the stroller."
Usually with single point interchanges they have slip lanes for people making right turns or in your case left turns. That way they don’t build on the highway and can easily merge into traffic without being held up at the light.
Wow... My 40k City doesnt have any traffic problems... Maybe cause my good public transport system. Trains carry people from 4 specific parts of the city to 1 main station from there they can use the tram to get to downtown or parks or they can go to other parts of the city. The tram carry people to the main roads and buses carry people from the main roads to the alley ways and little streets.
Every little neighbourhood have one elemetry school, every part of the city have one highschool and the hole city have one university nearby the main station. Maybe I can upload my city to the workshop.
I like you. Thumbs up.
It's best to plan ahead. Have high density one ways going in each direction along the coast where a bridge or a different kind of zone.
Note about the ai in game, they will always take the shortest route possible, even if that means some off road that is super slow and traffic built up instead of the highway which is faster and less traffic usually
If you're using Traffic Manager: President Editon, there is a button which makes that the cars respect the priority on timed traffic lights. But seriously, you need more public transportation and a more Roundabouts. I tried to use roaundabouts in my city placing it in the most congested zones and it WORKS!
Good ideas, how do you think about doing pedestrian overpass for this type of situation?
for pedestrians i usually build some undergroung or elevated roads, going through the city, connecting residantal areas, tram/metro stops, parks and main areas. with this and old-town policy, the city roads becomes almost empty, most of the time only the business trucks doing their jobs, but private vehicles are very rare.
+Gábor Orosz I'll be adding in a pathway/cycling network 'highway' soon. I'll be adding it in soon :)
Very enjoyable episode :)
Of course, since the city planners in the cities I've lived love roundabouts I half expected that to be the solution.
At 5:07 you can also give the off-ramps turning left green, as their specific lanes are not used by the traffic coming from the north. Similar at 5:19 you can allow the left turning lanes to the on-ramps a green light. Vice versa for the opposite directions... I need this game.
For the pedestrians i would make overpasses/tunnels
This probably wouldn't work in a real city, but in situations like this in Cities Skylines, I tend to try to avoid stop lights all together. Instead I just use on and off ramps. So I would basically dig the same tunnel you dug, but then rather than have all the on and off ramps converge to a point, I would just have 2 ramps connecting to each side of each road at varrying points. An on and an off ramp for each side. This makes it so that cars never have to make a left turn, and can simply merge into oncoming traffic as necessary. They only ever have to turn right onto their off ramp, which then becomes in on ramp which only allows them to enter in the same direction as the traffic is moving on the side of the road the on ramp connects with. It can look pretty ugly, what with all the ramps having to either overlap on top of each other at varying heights, or be dug underground at varying depths, and it takes up a lot of space, but, in my cities at least, it really helped with traffic flow. It usually works best for me if the off ramp on a particular side of a road is positioned such that cars reach it before the on ramp. This helps prevent cars coming out of the on ramp from getting in the way of cars trying to switch lanes to get to the off ramp.
The timed traffic lights actually work great in changing their times dynamically, if you let them, way better then you can do that with fixed times.
I think incorporating a metro, a commuter rail, and more buses would go a long way to help this traffic, you should focus on that next episode! There seems to be a lot of traffic for a city with such a small population even with the solutions showed in this video.
my town has an intersection just like this one when youre coming off the highway
Good logic sir but personally I would've tried to utilise the roundabout and not have the road that follows the river intersect with the highways at all, but again you provided a good working solution to what is as we all know, a mini game in itself - traffic!!!!
In the top lane at 11:09, they're stopping because you'll need to edit junction restrictions to allow vehicles to enter a blocked junction
Wow that traffic was REALLY bad Sam! You did a very good job fixing it!
+Mr. Brown thank u :)
I think the best way to solve that traffic problem is to maximize the use of public transort like subway system or trains connecting the islands. In that way, you could decrease the number of vehicles using the roads. You may also consider building another bridge to divert traffic congestion.
1:25 did he just fart?
XD I was looking through the comments trying to see if someone else noticed that.
Its his bird
Sounds like a cat's meow
1:29
I think it was his cat
such seaside tunnel would be extremely threatened by a quick flood wouldn't it? it would turn into two pools connecting two cutoff roads near intersection :D
Seems like the tunnel was a good idea but IMHO the six lane cross was kind of an over kill cluster. I think in such a situation with four entries on different preferences a roundabout may work better.
Hey could you look at the Diverging Diamond intersection? I use it for my highway entrances and exits and it seems to work pretty good, but it would be nice to get your opinion :)
MrC0MPUT3R i
The intersection you built at the beginning is called a SPUI: Single Point Urban Interchange
In CSL, I prefer DDIs over SPUIs since they look much nicer and are easier to manage. Especially as a dumbell hybrid they turned out to be very useful in my city.
Maybe you should also try out roundabout interchanges with direct slip roads or even a basketweave interchange if the situation allows it.
+kilésengati yeah I could. But I was limited with space so I couldn't do anything to huge in this Ep
Both junctions are actually SPUIs (though the signal phases used are weird; only three are required for an SPUI): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single-point_urban_interchange
How do you do the traffic light stuff at the start?! and the lane control stuff??!!
At 11:10 .. need to switch the traffic lights off. Just make the on/off ramps stop/yield signs.
The game probably could have easily figured out the lanes for the three different lane choises in your first build if you elevated them or sunk one and made that the only possible route
Just a suggestion but maybe add in more pedestrian walkways to connect distant parts of the city, I watched this one guy put them into his city and it releaved traffic quiet a bit.
This game really has me set on roundabouts lol. i know of 1 that ive seen anywhere in Arizona and its a nightmare because people have no idea how to use it
You could try solve it with a multilane roundabout.
You could check out vehicle density charts to decide nr of lanes.
You could verify if you might not need another bridge based on 2nd check.
Idea: design a city that is for the people/human centric
Have you watched Astergea?
All cities are human centric by definition. Humans aren't a homogeneus bunch so a single design philosophy doesn't work for everyone.
ale haim All cities are human centric. Cars didn’t design the cities 😂
Kinda hard to do when most city simulation games force you to use roads
you can build stairs over the road for the pedestrians, too.
You basically made a SPUI (sing point urban interchange. The are very popular in the United States especially in Oklahoma, Colorado, Utah, and Nevada.
This game looks so relaxing, ima pick it up on steam
Traffic turning left out off of an off ramp shouldn’t have to stop at an intersection, even if it is the mini highway. An interchange would have made traffic flow much smoother even if it meant that it would take up more space.
For your first intersection why not make a ramp directly from the coastline highway onto the bridge, avoiding the intersection altogether?
That mod that lets you control the lanes is great but you can easily overlook a minor detail that causes some major problems with your intersection if not very careful.
What is that mod called?
Traffic++
Wow, i only picked up this game a few days ago and i have to say there is a lot lot more to it then i first thought. I am a total noob where this game is concerned. I have to say that (i know its your job too) but you totally know what your doing lol i just wish i was. Ive been looking at some of your videos and im hoping i can take in what your teaching. My first city failed in an hour because i ran out of money and didnt have a sewage facility connected properly lol ive kinda worked out about water, sewage and power now, and yeap that does help. Ive still a million and one things to learn, especially about traffic flow. I have a small town around 2.900 people. I need to figure out how best to get traffic off the motorway and into the city now. I cant seem to get the premade intersections or roundabouts to connect properly and i think thats a bit of a problem. Im such a noob at this game.
@Sam Bur, your city looks amazing. What's the tree mod your using. I'd love to be able to plant trees and bushes quicker
3:17 idk if this is a good idea but would it be possible to not have an intersection go to the left side, but instead having people who go straight go over or under the intersection, avoiding it, and the people going to the other side would have one way roads going to the left side. Then those who want to use the ramps could go directly from the road, not having to drive to the intersection and wait. What do you people think?
Do you still have that save before fixing? I want to try the traffic lights again, this time with different lights for each lane!
Why has this suddenly popped up in my recommended and why do I love it?
Hi Sam! Love your channel; helps me unwind after a long day. Perhaps you could take a look at public transport? Also, maybe some bike lanes? I'm Dutch and bike lanes are standard here but I have 0% experience with it in the game. Thanks again and keep at it please!
Is the planning you're doing here with lights and roads anyhow nearly as detailed on the consoles or are all of them are mods?
There's no way of doing this on console.
It takes more time when traffic are switched lanes(Going north on the left lanes and South on the right lanes). That's why other Countries(Japan,Australia,Great Britain, etc)used this kind of traffic rules...🙂🤔
Build Up Gamerz australia barely has any traffic its amazing
I like to just reverse traffic flow. I do that by seeing that traffic is building on a road I did not intend and turning into a one way back to the highway they were coming from.
Would you say this game is incomplete without the TM and advanced roads mod? I've got a 70k city now and am stuck with 6 lane roads filling up because my intersections are so greatly inefficient. (we can forget roundabouts, obviously) I've tried to stay vanilla, but after watching a lot about TM I'm gonna give that a go.
Thanks for making this video!
The type of intersections where everyone can walk are called “Scrambles” and the one you are thinking of is the shibuya scramble.
You could be done in 2 seconds by just making a clear connection to the bridge from the highway thats congested. Clearly the cars are coming through that little neighborhood because of that
Why does he get sooo many dislikes? Come on he’s soo good at this stuff
Sorry if i write with some mistakes/ English not my native language. And sorry if i dont hear about this solve in the video for the same reason). I solved the pedestrian problem by footbridges and pedestrian tunnels. And, using the mod traffic presedent edition, disallow pedestrians to cross the road in this places.
He could maybe ramp the road instead of making it curved so there’s no traffic light stoppage and a sharp turn for the flow to the bridge?
Mental note: Make sure to use install and use move it and traffic pres in conjunction to really drain my old laptop but it was oh so worth it
A lot of traffic going away from Alabama and into GA then eventually go into CA
Hey man, good job on the videos!
I have a suggestion for an episode. How about a complete overhaul of the public transport systems in your city? It would be pretty cool to see you handling that. Anyways, you are an inspiration to all, so thanks for the videos!
+Vestergaardish aww.. thanks too !
In my city there is a junction with 8 exits and it’s a give way it’s really good try it!
RIP frame rate. But all in all,a pretty genius solution. I only have 2 things to ask though. 1. make a video on a big ring road around the city that all highways connect to and make it raised off the the ground so it's in the air and had roads running under it. 2. Make a short video explaining how to make timed interactions with that mod (because I have it too) because it's not as straight forward as one might think. It's very useful and I know a few places where I could use timed lights.
+Zzyzx okay sure. I'll keep that in mind
do you use traffic manager with highway mod on? its the best mod because it makes the traffic so good.
If you just removed the traffic lights and waited 5 minutes, it would have likely solved the problem. Traffic lights in skylines are terrible.
Late reply, but.... No, that wouldn't help much.
I mean yeah, it often really fixes traffic to just turn them off, but I am almost sure it wouldn't work there. There was just to much traffic going on from all sides. They will eventually block each other creating a mess again.
In my totally fucked up town I tried that on several occations too, in fact disabling the traffic lights is often the first thing I do, but there is just only so much traffic a simple crossing can handle without backups...
Expand 1-lane ramps to two or three lnae highways, sometimes this solves the problem. :)
I think u should place slip lines from road, to don't make cars more than 90° degress turn
man i try to stay focus but this is beyond my comprehension hahaha need to manifest more time to the game for me to be as good as you. btw how many hrs u spent on this game?
Can you do all this traffic detail on XB1? Like controlling traffic lights and traffic patterns?
And they call factorio a spaghetti simulator...
8eewee i don't get it
Because the conveyor belts (used to transport items) can get quite messy, hence the term "spaghetti". The traffic here got quite bad.
8eewee ah ok, i played factorio a few hours but didn't get it
What's a good traffic flow number to go by? I seem to go down to 72% and back up to 79/80 when I fix things.
In the 70s is good and is realistic
What mods are you using for getting those shadows and moving trees?
lets sign a petition for the devs to add mixed housing!
2:43 how do u draw those lines?
Edit: ok im downloading that network extension thingy to see how that goes.
Edit2: i downloaded the mod and ive got some extra roads but i dont have those extra buttons at the top of the screen and i cant draw those little lines or have timed traffic lights??
Hello, how to get 'directional' button at the right corner at 0:53?
I dont have that in my version.
Please help me, thank you!
Love your videos, and that design for an intersection near your bridge is very intriguing to me. Thanks for all you do to put these videos together!
If anyone is interested in more Cities Skylines content, I have two let's play series going right now: Fairview Shores (no mods or assets used) and Capilano Islands (heavily modded).
