    Hi Traveler. Well, they knew you were flying today, so they rolled out a special airplane from the hanger for you !! Aw, the sticker on the fuselage was hidden !! It's very cool flying at night and getting to cross the transition between night and morning. Welcome to the land of Fire an Ice. Where Iceland is Green and Greenland is Ice !!

    • @sla31
      @sla31  Před 2 lety +1

      I never know what to do when the sticker is hidden haha! And almost a full transition from night to morning. As is often the case. The flight attendants turned on the interior cabin lights right before dawn. Which, of course, means you suddenly can't see anything outside because of the interior reflection on the window. So, I had to cut out the first bit of dawn until the lights were turned back off. Thanks for watching my friend!

    I am forever amazed by your video quality. To say it's the nearest thing to being on these flights without actually being there is no overstatement. The detail of everything being passed upon take off is one of those details. The other, however, just barely noticeable, at 36:11, just as the plane has leveled, you see the faintest colors of remaining day to the west. By 38:11, you can squint and just barely see a hint of remaining blue but that day had all but officially ended completely as according to light & dark.

    This is the exact flight that I will probably have to take to get to Iceland and then from Keflavík I guess I can go to other cities in the country? Also, I feel like the takeoff was the same as with the Frankfurt, Germany from 2022 but in this one after takeoff it starts to head further north.

    This September will mark forty years (1982) since my first and only journey on Icelandair. It was a round trip from Chicago to Luxembourg with the obligatory stopover at Keflavik. It would be fair to say that things were quite different at Icelandair back then. Icelandair was often referred to as a 'hippie' airline.
    They had just a handful of planes then, all used to the point of looking used up. The plane we rode on looked the most used up of all. It was a Douglas Dc-8-55 originally built in 1965 for Scandinavian Airlines. Its registration was TF-FLB and we flew on it both ways. I won't say this plane was a bit tired looking, but in addition to the pull down plastic window shades, the windows sported plaid curtains that made it look like a piston engine airliner from 1955. It changed hands many times over the years, and was eventually converted to a freighter. The last time I checked its status was 2012, and it was still in operation, FORTY SEVEN YEARS after it was built!
    Enroute featured a lengthy sighting of the aurora borealis. The terminal at Keflavik appeared to be nothing more than a converted military hanger. It was so dreary and depressing that the U.S. Navy, which shared Keflavik as a base for their Lockheed Orions, made a standing offer of twenty million dollars US to help in building a replacement. Of course Iceland was too proud and stubborn to accept it. Maybe wise as well.😀

      What a story my friend. I'll admit I wasn't even alive in 1982 yet, but that's not too far off from my introduction haha. If only we had cameras back then like we have now. Even when I was a kid flying in the early 90's. The variety of aircraft types awesome. Thanks for that story my friend!

    Love the channel but this particular video is many hours of sheer darkness, nothing can be seen until 4:38, and finally 4:47:44 when the light changes and the really stunning visuals present themselves, the combination of grey and blue shades and cloud formations and then dashes of gold, typical of the Northern Skies until the landing really makes up for the pitch black middle portion.

      Thanks my friend. Yes, so starting with my trip to Iceland last month, I have upped the quality level of my videos once again. I’m always striving to have the best quality aviation content on CZcams. That now includes having new uploads be available at 4K60fps, as well as them being shot in full HDR, and having enhanced audio. I still have a lot of footage to post from before I made the change, so not all uploads are going to be at this level yet. But eventually, they will all be at this level.

    I haven't had too many night flights recently, but I can confidently say I've always enjoyed the breathtaking night lights of cities. Filming part though? Not so much... Videos being too dark on past iPhones, reflections from the cabin, etc -- and I've always gotten irritated and ended up avoiding night flights when possible.
    I recall your community post from not too long ago about finding a solution to this challenge, and I must say this is indeed impressive. The fact that it's a 767 makes it even better. What changes did you have to make to get such nice results, if you don't mind?

    • @temporarywindow
      @temporarywindow Před 11 měsíci +1

But today, your night flight shows the truth: the other boroughs and New Jersey are a lot brighter than Manhattan! I've watched other night flights of NY and you see the same thing.

      Yes, I showed it right as I was boarding. This one's name is Svörtuborgir. Which according to google translates to English as Black Fortress. It is the name of a row of volcanic craters west of Námafjall near Lake Mývatn.

      Yeah, so the one real shortcoming iPhone cameras have is that they are horrible when it comes to slowly changing light. Like that at dawn or dusk. So, I had to wait a few minutes between dark to dawn before the camera would focus correctly.

      Yeah, this was a few years ago when it was still very difficult to film the transition from dark to light. The camera lost focus and it was too dark out the window to get it back for awhile. That's why there is an abrupt jump. Thankfully it's much easier now with newer cameras to film that.

    Great fly! Have you ever seen KLM's "100" temporary livery? It was a livery with "100" painted on it to celebrate KLM's 100th anniversary in 2019 and it is the oldest airline that is still operating today under the original name.

    Is having to be tugged into the gate a regular thing in the US now? Haven't been in a decade.
    Last time I flew into LAX (from LHR), the tug was delayed and we sat there, looking at the empty gate for over 30mins, with the ramp workers looking at us, hands in pockets.
    It just seems such an unnecessary addendum to airport operations.

    • @sla31
      @sla31  Před rokem +1

      Well, "tow in only" gates are definitely still a thing in the US, although there aren't that many that I know of. That said, LAX is one of the airports I know where they still have some tow in gates. Basically, it's the airline that decide if a tow in is required, not the airport. It's generally done to help eliminate aircraft damage, as these gates are generally very tight gates, or they're the gates that are directly next to the base of the terminal. American has several tow in only gates at LAX and sometimes you're you just unlucky to get one. United has several two in only gates at SFO and I know of a few at LGA and JFK as well. So, they still exist, but they're definitely not the norm.

      I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this one. Obviously night flights aren’t for everyone. There’s a reason why I haven’t really done any in the past. It’s dark at night and you can’t see much haha. That said…. A large group of viewers, primarily those who use my flights to help sleep, have been asking me for A LONG time to post a full overnight flight. So they can have a full flight, to help them sleep; where the screen is dark. So again, I’m sorry you didn’t enjoy this one, but I hope you can see that it’s not a waste of time to everyone. There’s a diverse group of viewers here.
