  • Welcome to my humble farm snuggled in the heart of central Portugal!
For some time now, I've been contemplating giving this colossal orange tree a thorough pruning session to enhance its overall health and accessibility. This elder tree has always loomed large in my memory. The oranges it produces (though I am unsure of their variety) are a delightful summertime treat, distinct from the other varieties that typically ripen in winter. The unusual formidable thorns adorning the tree also never fail to delight the eyes... :O I still recall (as a small child) eagerly picking up fallen sticks to nudge the ripe oranges from their lofty perches, ready to savor their sweet juiciness.
To gain access to the heart of the orange tree, I first had to painstakingly trim away the spiky tendrils that threatened to impale me at every turn. Once clear, I ascended into the tree's canopy to address the first and largest branch slated for removal. However, upon severing it from the tree, it stubbornly wedged itself amidst the remaining branches... So, a second ascent became necessary to dislodge it, with the guiding hand of my mother aiding in the process from below. My mother couldn't help but exclaim: "DAMN TREE!" :D
With the stubborn branch finally on the ground, I carefully dismantled it into smaller, more manageable sections. Each cut was made with careful consideration, mindful of the sharp thorns that dotted its surface... Hehe, don't come here thinking you'll do it in a couple of minutes! :D It wasn't a small branch, but eventually, it was cut down into more manageable sections. As usual, the thickest parts are going to the fireplace.
Turning my attention back to the tree, I observed that the north-facing side appeared healthier than its sun-scorched counterpart to the south, where desiccated twigs begged for removal. So, with patience, I started their removal.
But soon enough it was time to return to the canopy once again because there was still much to do up there. Since I needed to go higher, I had to make way by cutting some more smaller branches. But they were growing towards the center of the tree and would need to be pruned anyway, so there was no harm done. With the cutting of this second branch, I carefully lowered it to the ground without incident, sparing my mother the need for intervention.
The work continued until all the higher branches were successfully pruned and lowered to the ground. My mother lent a hand in hauling down the smaller remnants, a testament to her enduring strength and determination.
With all the branches removed as planned, it was finally time to cut them into manageable pieces. I was really astonished by the sheer volume of material produced from pruning this single tree. In the end, I couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment as I treated the cuts with healing paste and surveyed the improved state of the tree. This monumental pruning effort marks a significant step forward in ensuring easier access to its fruits in the seasons to come.
I hope you've enjoyed this time at my homestead.
    See you soon!

Nice job with your renovation pruning of the orange tree. Climbing up in to the middle was the way to go.
And thank you for sharing the label of the Compo wound healing paste you used. Most appreciated 😊👍

I didn't know orange trees were armed, puts a completely different light on them! Well done to you & your Mum winning the battle.

This one is armed, but the rest of our orange trees are not. Variety? Rootstock used for the graft? I don't quite know...

@@AlongThePathsOfNature Interesting, I'd definitely prefer the unarmed trees!
