PRUNING BEFORE'S TOO LATE (Lots of tree pruning before spring really arrives to the homestead) *70

  • Hello everyone, and thank you for joining me in this week's video.
If you've been following my channel, you already know that this year, I'm dedicating a significant amount of time to pruning the farm trees. It's been a dual effort: to refine my pruning skills and address the neglect that many of the trees have faced over the years.
That first tree you've seen me tackle holds sentimental value. It was lovingly tended to by my father, who had a knack for apple tree pruning. Fortunately, it only required minor adjustments, a testament to my father's expertise.
Right now, you're seeing me attending to a pair of joined sour cherry trees, one of many such pairs on the farm. This task involves delicate pruning, as cutting all interlaced branches between the two trees can result in unbalanced growth, making them more prone to toppling in high winds. While I adhere to best practices, I still feel uneasy about more intensive pruning. However, it's worth noting that the fig tree in the background may give the impression that the sour cherry trees are in worse condition than they actually are.
Look, here's my uncle once again, lending a hand on the farm. He was in charge of pruning the vines and arranging their damaged supports. He did an amazing job!
Unfortunately, the weather has been very unstable for a long time now, with alternating periods of scorching sun, chilly days, heavy rainfall, storms, and high winds.
I also made some small embellishment prunes, like to the big old cork oak tree, just to clean those lower hanging branches and give them a better look.
Here I have another pair of joined trees. This time they're pear trees. But I decided to take one down and give the other one the space to grow. After that, I also pruned it a bit for a little facelift. :D This isn't a grafted fruit tree. But that's no matter for me because any tree is a blessing.
Here I have a bunch of plum trees. I had to select some to cut and a couple to let grow. Yes, again, a joined pair... :D In the future, my intention is to leave just one, but for now, I left two to see their progress and growth. I also took the chance to give some touches to these previously pruned pair of plum trees. Nothing much, really.
Now, onto a new challenge. This old apple tree suffered significant damage and partial death some time ago. Despite being deeply pruned to remove the dead parts, it never fully recovered. So, some time ago, while the leaves were still on, I removed more visible dead branches. Now I'm performing the winter pruning, adhering again to the best practices. As I said before, I prefer to prune conservatively rather than excessively, so I carefully consider this with each pruning task. This time is no exception. I always take the time to analyze the tree thoroughly. If you're mentally aligned, it can be quite a relaxing task. Unfortunately, this angle doesn't provide the best view of the pruning progress due to the numerous trees in the background, which can be confusing. My apologies for that. I had to fetch my long shears to cut two wider dead pieces and reach a bit higher to retrieve the last twig I cut down.
And finally, I also tackled this old pear tree, that, like the previous apple tree, was very damaged and partly dead a long time ago. The story is exactly the same. It was cut deeply to get rid of a dead part, but it never quite recovered from those events. So it was time to give it a facelift too. :D Compared with the apple tree, this pear was simpler to decide what to cut. The troublesome branches were more visible to the eye, I believe. But, in the end, I could not decide to reduce the length of two of the longer branches, keeping the tree visually uneven. Next year, I'll see what I can do about them.
Though time-consuming, these pruning tasks are nearing completion. I still have a few more trees to tackle, including the tumbled fig tree, but I'm confident I'll finish soon.

Great to see so many trees on your land, it's a lot to keep on top of & the changeable weather certainly is no friend.

Nice job pruning! All of the trees looked more open and they had better structure with scaffolded branch structure starting to appear.
The only thing I would add is to do some top working from a step ladder (or orchard ladder) if you are comfortable. The purpose is to cut the tips of the branches that are beyond a workable height back to a plump outward facing bud. If you don't take the tip off that's where the biggest shot of growth hormone (auxins) head - to the very tip. With top working, you redirect the growth of the crown outward instead of up. Make your cut about 1/2" (12mm) above the bud so the bud does not dry out. All the best!🤓👍

Thank you for your knowledge, that's very helpful. I have to do that in the future. But I'm going slowly so I can enjoy the process and not get overwhelmed by it.

@@AlongThePathsOfNature Slow and steady wins the race! You take the time to stop, step back and look. That is the most important lesson. When you are right up in there - you lose the big picture. 👍
