I find it difficult to compare skiers from different eras. The material has changed and evolved. Slope preparation is currently different and is also difficult to compare.
There is no question that there have been many outstanding personalities who have inspired many people through skiing. They had a charisma that was not only defined by fame and success.
For sure! And amount of races and competetiveness of winning too
Chi ha fatto la classifica? Le commesse di un negozio?@@speedkingz
A bit surprise too with a clear bias in this ranking, but that’s the point to discuss it, isn’t it?
Yes, no ranking without a discussion
Very shocked five time overall WC champion Marc Giradelli did not make the list. Same with four time overall champ Pirmin Zurbriggen. In addition to being second and third, respectively, in number of overall World Cup titles, both were great all-around skiers, with wins in every Alpine discipline over the course of their careers (with the exception of Parallel, which was not run during their careers). None of the other Men who have won at least three World Cup titles have won in every event that was competed in their careers. Hirscher, in the lead with 8 titles, never won a downhill or combined event. Gustav Theoni, tied third with Zurbriggen, never won a downhill. Phil Mahre and Stenmark, both tied with three titles, never won downhills or super-G (super-G being added as an event right near the end of their careers).
You got a point. Will make a new one
@@speedkingzHirscher won a Super G
And Tony Sailer 3 gold medals? And Gustav Thoeni? And Girardelli?
You get a bad note and must remake your homework
Where is Bojan Krizaj and Pirmin Zurbriggen and many more?
Just posted my comment with the exactly same thoughts and found yours. Zurbriggen was something like Pete Sampras of tennis, not including him is a very odd choice and for me personally an offense. The same goes for arguably the most versatile skier of all time Marc Girardelli. All skiers in the list are amazing, but these two giants simply must not be omitted.
What about Thoeni, Girardelli and Zurbriggen? It looks like a list done by a Norwegian fan 😅
Right, mate...
Exactly. No way Aamodt is #2.
was exactly my thought, as well 😄 Not to mention Zurbriggen or Girardelli but Tomba... okaaaaay 😄
Ingemar Stenmark. What a legend.
The whole country of Sweden stopped for a while every time he raced.
The way he managed to tackle the most difficult surfaces and courses in his very characteristic panther like style actually gave us goosebumps. Really miss these years of top alpine racing.
Thanks.
You can't be serious. Where is Pirmin Zurbriggen? Best Allrounder ever.
Yes, will make a new
@@speedkingz you forgot beni reich man
I miss Zurbriggen, Russi, Sailer, Schranz, Eberharter, Wasmeier and Giradelli on such a list
Wasmeier under top 10?
Wasmeiner is never ever top 10 of all time, no way@@willibaldpush6920
Hard to understand the omission of Girardelli and Zurbriggen. Aamodt and Stenmark were the master artists.
you forgot Marc Girardelli, Gustav Thoeni, Pirmin Zurbriggen ......
Must have been a Norwegian who made this video… not a single Swiss in the top 10?!? Oder matt currently already is in the top 5 and he is still racing
Odermatt good. Zurbriggen should be there
Yeah, the NOR bias is ridiculous. The only worthy NOR is Svindal and I put him 6th.
Totally agree. A complete joke of a ranking. Some of these Norwegians I didn't even know. No Swiss.....really?
I understand not including active athletes completely because it will likely make the video outdated immediately, but Zurbriggen is an absolute necessity
What about Pirmin Zurbriggen with 89 podiums, his world champion titles, his Olympic gold medal and all the big globe trophies for wining the overall world cup ranking quite a few times?
Stenmark is on a level of his own. From an era when the World Cup compared to today, was the wild west.
They changed just about every rule to slow him down.
An absolute icon.
Not including Pirmin Zurbriggen and Marc Girardelli makes this a very unreliable source!
Kind of agree. Zurbriggen should be there
Yes, I have Zurbriggen 4th and Girardelli 5th.
+Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen
Good take, give you that. Why would you have switched?
Italy stopped every time Alberto was at the starting line. He turned a sport watched only in the mountains to a sport watched nationwide. Miss you
#1 in my books, always.
These are the 10 greatest norvegian skiers of all time, with foreign participation. Every other title is ridiculous!
Yes! 👍👍👍
Norway is best🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻🇧🇻
Is Odermatt disqualified because he's still active?
No, nearly there
safe he will break stenmarks record he has 12 gs in a row 2 more to go easy 🤦♂️@@speedkingz
I agree 100% with Ingemar, but really, no SWISS????? You must be joking.
The list is skewed in favor of Norwegians.
Please give me your top 10. Will post on wall and see if people agree. In?
If Hermann hadnt have his motorcycle accident, he would have been on the first place similar to stenmark or even better. He was such an extraordinary skier.
Based on ski-db stats and who i feel were the best overall during their career. Taking into account age, comebacks, etc. Yes, Girardelli and zurbriggen should be there. But you can still argue for the other ones on this list
And which two you take out? I fear you have to think about one or two Norwegians.
Good list, but Marc Girardelli and Pirmin Zurbriggen must be on this list too! As well as Edgar Grospiron, the mogul master!
Zurbriggen and girardelli will be on next time
And Didier Cuche, 5x winner of Kitzbühel
What about Austrian Toni Sailer? He won all the alpine events (Downhill, GS, Slalom) by HUGE margins in the 1956 Olympics (much greater margins of victory than Killy in 1968). I was fortunate enough to get his autograph when he visited Ottawa in 1964.
exactly, he is the GOAT for sure. Greatest to the author of this video apparently means you have to be from Norway and time frame is last 30 years.
Absolutely
He later designed many of the runs in Appi-Kogan, Japan which still proudly bear his name...
Top 10 All Time lists are tough to compile because there's always disagreement about why somebody or another isn't on the list. But there's usually not much disagreement when it comes to the very top of the list, e.g. who's the greatest, who's the GOAT. Alpine skiing ... Ingemar Stenmark.
Somehow I still love the style of Stenmark.
Crazy how he manages to wipe out ever single gate with his jumping
Such Rock solid technique...not just as a racer but overall...good for anywhere, and all conditions on the mountain, not just in the gates. Phil Mahre too. You can see this solid technique carried over onto other terrain by Scott Schmidt.
@@sprintn918 there are many who learned that way.
I skied with Frank Worndl. Racer with fine success but bit of a wasted genius.
If it wasn’t against the clock he was just playing the ground, like a dance kinda Art.
A interesting list with a lot of norwegian touch.... I clearly miss on this list Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, Gustavo Thöni, Toni Sailer and Marco Odermatt !
You forgot Gustav Thoeni, a legend of the ski
Bode Miller was often spectacular, but far from good enough for such a list. Pirmin Zurbriggen was one of the most complete alpine skier of all times. I think he is still, and always will be, the only one to ever win a WC SL and downhill race in the same week.
Incredible. As ypu can see in description, Killy was something spectacular too
Totally agree about permin Zurbringen. The list seems to be biais to Norwegians. What about Giradelli ?
Bode miller may not have the raw numbers but at his peak he was the most complete male skier ever. He’s still the only one to have at least 5 wins in every discipline. And it’s a shame he hasn’t won more races overall
Love this list. The best skiiers I've seen live are Stenmark and Shiffrin. FOR Men my faves are Stenmark, Phil Mhare, Tomba, and the HERMANATOR!
for me hirscher was the best of all Time 😍🇦🇹
Dominated his time
@@speedkingz yeah really craazy but stenmark and all the other guys was also really strong 🤝💪🏻
I have him at 2nd behind Stenmark. Stenmark was robbed of ALL globes due to the rules back then.
I would agree that Stenmark is the GOAT but also remember he battled the Mahre brothers. There was also Marc Girardelli, Pirmin Zurbriggen, and where's Gustavo Thoeni who later coached Alberto Tomba?
Girardelli and Zurbriggen yes
Can you justify why Gustav Thoeni or Karl Schranz not? Thoeni won World Cups in 71, 72, 73 and 75 ( dramatic finish against Stenmark). Won also 3 Olympic medals an 7 World championship medals, of this 5 gold. His technical skill in GS and GSL was superb for his time. Probably you are to young to evaluate that.
Zurbriggen?
Totally agree Ingemar Stenmark is rightly at the top of the list
Lasse Kjus did something I don't think will be repeated ever in alpine skiing. In the Vail world championship in 99, he got a medal in all 5 events. 3 silver and 2 gold medals. Gold in Super G and Giant slalom, silver in the downhill, combined and slalom. Still can't believe he pulled that off....;-)
And that's one of the reasons he's here. Too many forgot how of good of an allrounder he was
@@speedkingz speaking of good allrounders but not mention Zurbriggen and Girardelli..?
Zurbriggen and Giardelli not being on here is ridiculous and having Bide at number 10 is also…..he completely and single handedly changed the line and technical approach with equipment to the sport
Do you know Who are Girardelli and Zurbriggen?
Agree they should have been there
Excellent performance, congratulations to all wonderful participants 👌👌👌
Hirscher should obviously be #1 or #2. Also, Zurbriggen and Girardelli should both make the list, perhaps even top five. Apart from that, not too shabby. Odermatt could be in the top ten after this season IMO.
Zurbriggen girardelli yes, but hirscher 1st?
There's no competition for 1st. Come on...
What are the arguments to rank this way? Number of victories? Zurbriggen (won in all disciplines), Cuche (record of victories in Kitzbuehl), Girardelli? It seems that this ranking is based on subjectivity. Fine for me, but change the title of the video then.
Great video. Fun to watch. Difficult to pick just ten
For sure, some has to be left out, everything just opinions, can argue for both. Thanks
Thanks, great conversation starter, how about Stenmark, Hirscher, Killy, and Girardelli. The rest may argue for the other spots.
Killy was number 9 in this list, hirscher 4th, stenmark 1st. So what do you mean?
It shows that there have been some amazing skiers when Pirmin Zurbriggen isn't even in the top 10.
Pirmin Zurbriggen e Girardelli al di la di questi nomi ci devono sempre essere in una classifica dei migliori .
Marc Giradelli? Pirmin Zurbriggen?
Interesting subject. Of the three Norwegian included, only Svindal clearly belongs. The other two (Lasse Kjus and Aamodt) are clearly Norwegian homer choices. The glaring omission is Pirmin Zurbriggen. Toni Seiler from the 1950s is from an era impossible to truly consider within modern skiing.
Prima dei norvegesi, Aamod a parte, viene Zurbriggen e Girardelli, oltre a Gustavo Thoeni...
Weird that Aamodt and Kjus get so much flak. Clearly the most versatile/complete alpinists on this lists, which otherwise consist mostly of specialists(hence they won overall WC many times, most-winning olympians of all time etc)
Totally agree. And Aamodt got by far most top10s ever, and there's more races now too. Superb overall and really impacted the sport. Especially in olympics and wc
Nice list, but Tomba's record is inaccurate. He won three Olympic gold medals, two World Championships, four World Cup titles in slalom, four in giant slalom, and one overall World Cup title.
Thanks for clearing
How is pirmin zurbriggen not in there? Belongs into the top 6
Before I watched the list I made my own. 8 names matched. I think you could make a point for Zurbriggen, Girardelli, Toni Sailer or Zeno Colo.
Alexander Zhirov could have been included in this list, but a car accident interrupted both his career and his life...
"Zhirov was a wonderful skier. I guess... he was a genius." Ingemar Stenmark.
Wow, thanks
My number one is Hermann Maier. His life should be made into a film
agreed re Stenmark
Where Pirmin Zurbriggen?!! Marc Girardelli ?!! Some of those shown here could possibly have their shoes shined! 🙂
Where you from?
Specially Bode Miller feels like a reach. He obviously was a spectacel all or nothing rider, which is fun to watch
No Zurbriggen is crazy! Excpected him in the top 5! He’s probably thr most important skier for the development of the sport.
Alberto Tomba feels also missing, but some italiens probably will remind you 😉
Bode is one of a kind, admired by all the best as one of the fastest
Was this list made by a Norwegian? I am Norwegian and i have to say that Pirmin should be in the top five on this list! No discussion. Girardelli top ten aswell. Kudos, though for putting Lasse Kjus up there. He competed in all events in Vail 1999 and made it top two in every event. Had a lot of health problems ruining many seasons but had a ‘feeling’ that is hard to describe. (Both Kjus and Aamodt have no doubt Stenmark was the greatest ever, btw). I am to young to know about Killy and Thoeni.. Interesting discussion, though! I bet Odermatt will be remembered as one of the greats! Peace from Norway✌️
Takk!
the Swiss were completely forgotten (Russi, Zurbriggen, Cuche, von Grünigen, etc.)!
And Zeno Colo and Gust 💨 va Thoni and pierino gros
Such classifications are perforce arbitrary, but this one is extravagant. I argue the label greatest *skiers* (not downhill or technical specialists) should be for the few ones who won races in all the disciplines. My own number 1 among those few, is Zurbriggen. Girardelli won one more Cup because he was active longer, but Zurbriggen had the sheer class that left you in awe. Bode Miller is close, with Thoeni and very few others.
Aamodt in 2nd place is not right: he was very good in single important events like Olympic Games, but very few Worldcup victories. Aamodt, Kjus and Klammer above Tomba: no! Where is Zurbriggen?
Agree to some extent. The best ones performed when it really matters though
There are too many great all-rounders to include Klammer. Even he later admitted he mostly won on aggression over technical skill. Once really strong technical downhillers like Podborski and younger Austrians appeared he wasn't competitive. It's ridiculous that Shiffrin isn't on this list.
@@dansprague2Klammer was extremely dominant for three seasons, winning once 10 downhills in a row, often with a lead of one or two seconds. He lost dominance not for technical reasons but psychology, first time after the grave accident of his brother. Among ten skiers I would always include Klammer.
The greatest alpine skiers are only those who were able to win in in EVERY disccipline. - So, certrainly no Stenmark, no Maier, no Hirscher etc.
I think you are at the wrong place.
I think he is right. Otherwise call it the greatest downhiller or slalom or GS skier. A great Alpine skier should be able to do it in all the disciplines.
Pirmin Zurbriggen is where?!? Marc Girardelli is where??? Omg😱
For me, Killy was #1. (I'm 75, so I remember. Haha!)
Haha, incredible skier
Didn't Killy win gold at the 1968 Olympics in slalom, GS and downhill?
@@pierremarcoux9465 Yup. In Innsbruck. No Super G yet.
Yup - when I saw that he was using Dynamic VR17 skis, I decided that if they were good enough for him, they were good enough for me!
He is the only alpine skier to win a DH, SL and GS globe. Incredible! I have him at 9th OAT.
The Problem is there are Lot of really good skiers Like Didier cuche, Vivica kostellic, Svindal, Hans Knaus, Mario Matt,...
Where is Alberto Tomba
He's in there. 4th or 7th dont remember
I have Tomba at 10th.
Forgetting Wayne Wong, Spyder Sabich, Glen Plake and Jonny Mosely. I mean, watch any real ski movie, by Warren Miller or Matchstick, and check out the local villains. Not hating on any of the Norwegians, just being comfortable with a broader definition of "skiing".
Who did this ranking? Did he ever watch ski competitions for the past 40 years?Aside from Stenmark, Klammer and Killy, you are totally off my friend...
Wtf is ketjl andre amondt doing on second position?
Kjus better than Tomba, Thoeni, Girardelli and Zurbriggen? And Aamodt at the second palce?
Ghiradelli, Zurbrigen, Von Groenigen probably should be on this list (and I should probably look up how to spell their names).
What about Pirmin Zurbriggen and Marc Girardelli??
Could be there
Pirmin Zurbriggen would like a polite word with you!
How about making a list of the best skier from every country? I know it'd be difficult for skiing giants like Austria, Switzerland, Norway etc but for Britain it just has to be Dave Ryding!
Haha, good video idea. I'll give it a go, stay tuned
Zurbriggen? Girardelli?
You might want to change the title to "Top 10 Greatest Male Alpine Skiers of All Time"
Why? It is self explanatory. Women's alpine ski racing is a joke compared to men's like football.
"and also mainly Norwegian"
Herminator No. 1 No Question. Absolut Legend.
Zurbriggen, Girardelli and Cuche. Come on.
What about Tony Sailer with 3 🥇 medals at the 1954 Olympics, the first and one of only two with JC Killy to win all three.
Where are Zurbriggen, Girardelli...Thoeni...😮😮 ???
Rudolf Nierlich
Stephan Eberharter
Marc Girardelli
Pirmin Zurbriggen
Michael von Grünigen
Odermatt has to be on this list in 2-3 years
Not even one Swiss racer??? ⛷️🇨🇭
Sadly. Many good ones. Cuche maybe?
@@speedkingzzurbriggen > Kjus, Klammer, Aamodt, Svindal
Cuche ,von Grùningen,Zurbriggen have to be on that list;and I am Austrian
Klammer and Svindal should not be on that list.
Guenther Mader,Giradelli also won in all 5 disciplines
@@TheLedahosn Your take. Klammer is by many considered the greatest downhill skier. Svindal won all there is to win in speed races, and with his injuries and comebacks, you can argue he really is among the greats
Hard to define the ten best. But Zurbriggen was a true master. As was Giradelli. Has been said by others. ;-)
I know it´s difficult, but I think you forgot in your TopTen Didier Cuche, Karl Schranz, Toni Sailer.
Ingemar Stenmark 2024 at age 67:
czcams.com/users/shortsp7bQZ4me7OE?si=aFWYPscMTwQPrcdr
A list after personal feelings, rather than actual achievements...
Maybe, but achievement wise, can't be too far off except for maybe zurbriggen and girardelli
Yes, I agree. Miller, Kjus and Aamodt should not be on this list.
Stenmark was an easy choice as the top male skier, but I would have loved to see one or two of the real pioneers, like Stein Eriksen!
see my post about Toni Sailer
Id ad zurbriggen and even go so far, to add marco odermatt into the top10, or lets say especially after this season
You need to rank the women - skiers like Schriffrin and Vonn are two of the best ever.
Agree, but this is men only. Will make a new one
@@speedkingzWhy not say best mens skiers then? All you did is give this video a misleading title.
Can't compare women's with men's.
Men's waay more competitive.
And Nadig
And Lara Gut
What about Marc Girardelli? I expected him to be on this list, are you serious?
Could be there, should probably
Klammer, was always on the edge.
What about Armin Assinger?
you forgot Squirrel Murphy
Good candidate
All of the great skiers recognized Bode as skiing faster than they had ever seen.
Exactly why he's here, but some people still complain
Obviously....you are a ski fan. Only fan. And Norwegian fan.
Pirmin Zurbriggen,Marc Giradelli???🇵🇱
What about Toni Sailer??
the Herminator should be No.1 on your list.
Aah, dont agree, but good pick
Agree that Stenmark is a league of its own, and also Aamodt has more WCH and OI medals, but Herminator has way more WC podiums. I see him as somekind of underdog. Like Herman Maier who? but when you see his career you can't be unimpressed
what about Thoeni, Girardelli and Zurbriggen ?
What are the criteria ? Seems very subjective
No matter the GOAT has been Marchel Hirscher, amid 8 WC in a row.
Another playfield when Stenmark run...
