  • This is a repost of the May 2022 patron-only video about Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home and how the multiverse theme not only plays in with postmodernism but also how it can be used to return to a traditional vision.

I love that Jonathan has doubled down on "Barfield"

What did you think about the fact that the way the chose to redeem with villains was with use of pills and technology?

This video is from an alternative reality where the actor playing the Amazing Spider-Man is actually in fact named Andrew Barfield

Plot twist: Andrew Garfield is a huge Symbolic World fan, and is devastated at how Jonathan pronounces his name.

A good way of understanding the word "Apocalypse" would be something like a conclusion or closure of a story.

Jonathan, I think you will like "everything everywhere all at once". Its also a multiverse movie, but its also about nihilism and love. You will enjoy breaking down the symbolism.

I love your idea of "No Way Home" ending up in a type of Eden or, even better, Zion. I love how the movie ends with Peter Parker inhabiting his original place renewed with unlimited potential. He is wiser, and after the striving & suffering that he experienced in all of his stories, he can do and be anything. That is such a quietly joyful thing. And most importantly, after everything that happened, he recognizes the people he loves, and they are there with him. But he has the wisdom to proceed with a new patience and care that he learned on the journey. Is this what Zion holds in store for us? Hurrah!

I think on a subconscious level, this might be a deeper reason why this movie resonated with so many people and why it was so successful for so long in theaters. I was expecting not to enjoy it as much as I wanted going into it because of all of the multiverse stuff, but to my surprise, I ended up really enjoying myself because it decided used this plot device to actually do and say something meaningful that couldn't really have happened without it. I think you articulated why I felt this better than I've been able to identify and articulate for myself, so this was very welcome insight.

I’m so glad you did an analysis of this movie. I found it brilliant. My thoughts are is nuanced but I was immediately struck to find it full of Christian themes of mercy, redemption, and forgiveness over the cancer of resentment and revenge.

Jonathan, I've been thinking about this exact point about the multiverse for a long time and I love how you explained it. I would recommend you check out a different Spider-Man movie that was also very reliant on the multiverse as the revelatory force of the 'pattern of Spider-Man', which is called "Into the Spider-Verse". It does what you say here, but it does so much more explicitly and with better story-telling than "No Way Home". (I think the success of "Spider-Verse" is what gave Sony and Marvel the guts to commit to a multiverse story for "No Way Home", given the logistical issues of gathering the old actors and writing a script that includes them all.) Based on your argument here, I think you'll really like it!

The thing I loved the most of No Way Home is the fact that Tobey acts as an older sibling or even a mentor figure to the other two Spider-Men. As if the filmmaker wanted to acknowledge that he is, in fact, the best movie Spider-Man. Kinda funny, but also kinda perfect.

Watching the No Way Home made me realise they aren't really spiderman movies. When the first one came out everyone was excited to jump straight into spiderman and skipping the origin story. But now it's obvious all three movies were his coming of age/origin story as it included the infamous line. The movie ends with Peter going to college which is something already happened at the end of the first movies for the other iterations.

i refer to this as breaking the 1st wall, which is the wall between the writer and the narrative, rather than the 4th wall between the narrative and the audience

I would love to see Jonathan talk about "Everything Everywhere all at once" just like spiderman it's also about how the characters heal thier wounds through self awareness of thier patterns in the multiverse. In the end the message is love is the beat path in life and just existence in general.

I can't wait to hear your thoughts on spiderman into the spider verse and across the spiderverse

Something I'm always thinking about is, how is it going to feel when art returns to its original pattern
