as a master armorer, there are two tips I give people for cleaning the M16/AR15 series rifles. Both of which I developed in the Army as an Armorer in a direct support unit (disabled vet w/18 years service and 37 years with the AR15/M16 series) for clean and lube I use CLP. to clean the gas tube in the upper receiver I used a cotton string that's looped over the gas tube. I start with some CLP on the string and you simply pull one side of the string and then the other. this removes all the carbon from the outer gas tube (important for automatic weapons and especially for cleaning after using blanks) the inner gas tube is cleaned using pipe cleaners. Now I used to mess with my guys when they turned in the rifles after cleaning. I would look at them and ask "is it clean?" (I always checked closely no matter what) but for the guys that said IT WAS CLEAN, I would always pull out a pipe cleaner and within 2 seconds pull out black crud (and no cheating) my two favorite crud locations were (for full stock rifles) the buttstock drain hole, and the three small holes next to the gas tube in the upper receiver. I had a 100% success rate in those two spots finding crud. what was the second cleaning tip? Go to the store and find buy a horsehair paintbrush (4 inches) nothing will work but a real horsehair brush.. (synthetic paintbrushes will not work) this is how ALL my weapons were oiled. once the brush has been used a couple times yo can oil a rifle with 4 drops of oil (plus what's on the brush) what you want is to use as little oil as possible. when done correctly you will have ZERO oil running, only a matte finish with the slightest hint of a glossy shine. basically, it's dry brushing oil onto the metal surfaces. this will provide the best protective coat of oil for storage and for use. (works great for the bolt carrier too).

I have watched at least 6 videos today showing how to field strip my AR. This is the only one that showed the process clearly enough that this novice can follow. Thank you so much!
I'd like to add this. You may want to begin cleaning the buffer spring and buffer tube. Clearing out some of that carbon will take away some of the friction on each round fired and take away a little bit of that recoil that we all hate so terribly much. A good way to test this is fully assemble your AR/M4. Pull back the charging handle slowly and if it sounds like there's dirt inside the buffer tube or on the spring, even after being cleaned, lube the spring, not a lot but the entire spring. then re-test the charging handle and see the difference. I promise it makes a huge difference. P.S. clean the trigger assembly, it does get very dirty.

So glad you specifically said to fully extend the bolt in order to reinsert it into the upper receiver. This is often left out on so many of these cleaning videos. Very good video.
When I was in the Army in the 60's I was certain the Mattel-16 was a flawed and passing fad. I'd never guess I'd be in old age and watching a cleaning video on one. I really figured they would have been scrap-metal'd out by now. My detractors say the rifle have "changed" but I still hear about entire squads in contact with an enemy with jammed rifles (changing the name to M4 changes nothing). This is the best AR15/M15/M4 video on CZcams. Yes, clean, clean, clean, clean. Better yet, keep your knife, bayonet, pistol and frags very close, and remember above all that AK's/SKSs etc don't jam even when they haven't been cleaned. Bought an SKS new for $69 back in the 80's as a test; it's had over five cases (5,000 rds) through it and never seen a drop or oil or any cleaning and never failed once. Any Mattel enthusiasts got one of those? Thank you again, and keep those cleaning videos coming.
I'm not a Mattel enthusiast but I will say my AR-15 on the civilian side or my m-4 in the military has failed me proper upkeep will do the trick every time

mnpd3 yes sir, I bought 4 of them in the 70s at a gun show when the first started importing them. I too had to trust my life to gene stoners pos in 67/68. Made friends with our company armorer and got myself a cut down m14 . Had it until I was hit at lz hardcore February 1 1968. Gave it to one of the guys in my squad. We called it the pee bringer. You're absolutely right about the sks. Damn fine rifle. Mine are all Russian with new norinco bolts.(no more slam fire) 2 of them have been modified to take ak magazines and have "extra" trigger groups for rock n roll if needed. I think with me, my two sons and son in law make a pretty formidable fire team regards, and welcome home
Man this vid is well over 2 years old and it keeps on giving! I just bought a Mossberg MMR and had so much anxiety over breaking it down to clean the manufacturing and shipping gunk off of it. I watched two other vids and only yours got me through returning the charging handle and the carrier bolt assembly to their rightful place using your technique. The other guys say "now just return the charging handle and bolt assembly group back together" I'm like what?! How?! It was a struggle until you said, " It's very simple" and it was. I really want to say thanks for teaching me not just showing me how to field strip my AR. Keep up the education of us neophytes!

Yesterday I got my very first AR15. Today I took it to the range and put 40 rounds down range. This evening, following this video, I stripped, cleaned, and reassembled my AR15. It COULD NOT have been any easier! Thank you for your slow pace and great close-up shots. I was nervous prior, envisioning getting a bunch of parts laid out and not being able to put them back together. Now I know I could strip it and reassemble it with no problem. With a little practice, I'd probably be able to do it in the dark. But, why would I want to....? :D Thank you for this great video and information!
After watching NSZ85, I ordered a 3 pack of Ballistol on Amazon a few weeks back and cleaned and lubed my weapons yesterday even though they did not need a cleaning. A lot easier to clean this way and I like the way the wrack feels and sounds as it slides on my hand gun and same with the bolt carrier. Seems to glide with noticably less friction. Ballistol will be my choice going forward.
Still using this video in 2024! What I like most, its not a sales video about which solvent/CLP is best. "hey I have used all of these products, I like Ballistol the best, but use what you want and follow along" simple and effective.

Apprenticetothesith In Maryland. semi-autos and handguns are under the category "regulated firearms" almost all semi-autos are banned except if they have a heavy barrel (which they don't define). So in order for me to buy my springfield xdm (first gun) I have to take a class (275) get fingerprinted (54-ish) and submit an application for a Handgun Qualifying License (50). then wait 30 days (mine took 21) before I could buy the gun (490). then wait 7 more days before I can pick it up.

Never apply lubricant in any of the holes in the bolt carrier or any other holes. The holes are gas relief ports and they are never to be plugged with oil build up..

Great video however I would add the following steps and thoughts. 1. Use that Q-Tip wetted with Ballistol to clean the Bolt Face and Extractor. 2. Use Ballistol and a Chamber Brush to clean those Lugs in the Barrel'x chamber. 3. Try Motul Synthetic oil since it "creeps" whereas Mobile 1 is repelled from the Steel parts. Thanks, Dave M.

Just cleaned my AR for the first time, and man, this video made it so much easier. It was fairly nerve-wracking disassembling and reassembling it, but I quickly realized that there is no "wrong" way to follow the process. 10/10 would struggle with putting in retaining pin again.
This scene scares me and remind me. I've been fired upon within a 10 yard radius in a CQB situation on April 9, 2002 and was grazed in the left upper forearm, and will never forget. No one else with me lost there life thankfully and God willing but it changed My life.
Didn’t really clean much of anything. Stuck that “clean” bolt back in that dirty ass upper receiver bet it looked exactly the same as before he “cleaned” it. And that charging handle was pretty gross too. But he only noticed the wear. Lmao

I appreciate it. Last time I did this I was a cav scout in 1984. So my memory faded a little bit. I remembered a few basics, but thats it. We used to field strip and reassemble in two minutes with a blindfold on, in case we ended up in a dark place.

Thank you. Just loaded and ejected a bunch of rounds to cycle my first AR and this video helped me diagnose my issue. Not only was my bolt dry (i lubed the carrier but didn't know to remove the bolt to lube it) but then putting it all back together i realized by not letting the bolt drop by its own spring tension (letting it go gently like i would indoors with my glock) it wasn't forcing my rounds fully into the chamber, so they weren't being extracted either. Sorry for the essay, just wanted to say thanks for helping me understand the mechanics/physics of what I'm working with

Rob Scha Nay Nay That depends on a lot of variables. What ammo were you using, what materials is your barrel made of, and what kind of gas system to you have in your rifle? generally, an AR is good for 500-1000 rounds before needing any cleaning, but a piston system, coated barrel, and quality ammo can push that number up quite a bit.
Rob Scha Nay Nay DPMS is a solid manufacturer, so the actual rifle should give you little to no trouble. If I may give a recommendation on ammo, anything bearing the names Hornady, Federal, or Remington will make your experience much more enjoyable. Just steer clear of Tula. In the Marines, we used a hand brush (tooth rush looking) that takes all the carbon off. Using just a t shirt makes me feel like you're not taking all that carbon on.... that being said, there are going to be critics for everything. You did a great job with the video. Thank you!

AK enthusiasts crack me up. The 7.62x39 round is very inaccurate, they weigh a ton and mounting optics to them is a joke.

Yesterday I got my very first AR15. Today I took it to the range and put 40 rounds down range. This evening, following this video, I stripped, cleaned, and reassembled my AR15. It COULD NOT have been any easier! Thank you for your slow pace and great close-up shots. I was nervous prior, envisioning getting a bunch of parts laid out and not being able to put them back together. Now I know I could strip it and reassemble it with no problem. With a little practice, I'd probably be able to do it in the dark. But, why would I want to....? :D Thank you for this great video and information!

I have never had an issue while using Ballistol for years.
After watching NSZ85, I ordered a 3 pack of Ballistol on Amazon a few weeks back and cleaned and lubed my weapons yesterday even though they did not need a cleaning. A lot easier to clean this way and I like the way the wrack feels and sounds as it slides on my hand gun and same with the bolt carrier. Seems to glide with noticably less friction. Ballistol will be my choice going forward.

Still using this video in 2024! What I like most, its not a sales video about which solvent/CLP is best. "hey I have used all of these products, I like Ballistol the best, but use what you want and follow along" simple and effective.

Putting solvent into those holes might break free carbon buildup if there is any. It's a good idea.
I think he used a solvent which would break up grime. And it’s not thick so it get spit out.
The Otis B.O.N.E Tool works well also, and is smaller/easier to carry.. Drop it in a cleaned and delabeled medicine prescription medicine bottle for storage in your cleaning box. Catch it on sale at an online retailer.

Apprenticetothesith In Maryland. semi-autos and handguns are under the category "regulated firearms" almost all semi-autos are banned except if they have a heavy barrel (which they don't define). So in order for me to buy my springfield xdm (first gun) I have to take a class (275) get fingerprinted (54-ish) and submit an application for a Handgun Qualifying License (50). then wait 30 days (mine took 21) before I could buy the gun (490). then wait 7 more days before I can pick it up.

Never apply lubricant in any of the holes in the bolt carrier or any other holes. The holes are gas relief ports and they are never to be plugged with oil build up..
Can you please give a specific time marker where he does this So I can be sure to not make the same mistake?

Great video however I would add the following steps and thoughts.
1. Use that Q-Tip wetted with Ballistol to clean the Bolt Face and Extractor.
2. Use Ballistol and a Chamber Brush to clean those Lugs in the Barrel'x chamber.
3. Try Motul Synthetic oil since it "creeps" whereas Mobile 1 is repelled from the Steel parts.

I was in the military in the early 80's, and used to be able to field strip and clean/lube my M-16 and reassemble it in two minutes flat.....just recently bought my first AR, and was a bit nervous about breaking it down....been a lot of years, thx for the refresher course....

Just cleaned my AR for the first time, and man, this video made it so much easier. It was fairly nerve-wracking disassembling and reassembling it, but I quickly realized that there is no "wrong" way to follow the process.
10/10 would struggle with putting in retaining pin again.

Didn’t really clean much of anything. Stuck that “clean” bolt back in that dirty ass upper receiver bet it looked exactly the same as before he “cleaned” it. And that charging handle was pretty gross too. But he only noticed the wear. Lmao

I appreciate it. Last time I did this I was a cav scout in 1984. So my memory faded a little bit. I remembered a few basics, but thats it. We used to field strip and reassemble in two minutes with a blindfold on, in case we ended up in a dark place.
I don't see any reason not to lube the bolt some before installing it in the carrier.
Lightningmicro here’s a reason not to lube the bolt, faster carbon build up. Here’s another reason not to oil the gas ports, faster carbon build up......🤦♂️

Thank you. Just loaded and ejected a bunch of rounds to cycle my first AR and this video helped me diagnose my issue. Not only was my bolt dry (i lubed the carrier but didn't know to remove the bolt to lube it) but then putting it all back together i realized by not letting the bolt drop by its own spring tension (letting it go gently like i would indoors with my glock) it wasn't forcing my rounds fully into the chamber, so they weren't being extracted either.

Rob Scha Nay Nay That depends on a lot of variables. What ammo were you using, what materials is your barrel made of, and what kind of gas system to you have in your rifle? generally, an AR is good for 500-1000 rounds before needing any cleaning, but a piston system, coated barrel, and quality ammo can push that number up quite a bit.

Rob Scha Nay Nay DPMS is a solid manufacturer, so the actual rifle should give you little to no trouble. If I may give a recommendation on ammo, anything bearing the names Hornady, Federal, or Remington will make your experience much more enjoyable. Just steer clear of Tula. In the Marines, we used a hand brush (tooth rush looking) that takes all the carbon off. Using just a t shirt makes me feel like you're not taking all that carbon on.... that being said, there are going to be critics for everything. You did a great job with the video. Thank you!
