  • Here is my choice of gear for the 2018-19 season.
    To learn more: Absolutetelemark.com/gear2019
    Telemark gear has evolved so much in the last few years. What binding to choose, NTN or 75mm.
    What boot to choose, Scarpa, Crispi or Scott,
    And what ski will give me the most out of my telemark season.
    I do two types of telemark, I am a ski patroller and I am a guide. I need a set up for the resort, groomers, bumps, glades, fast in and out. That's usually around 90mm underfoot ski with a solid binding.
    Then I need one ski that will be light, good for touring, and wide to float on the snow.
    I usually go for a ski between 105 and 115 mm underfoot, less than 3.5kg and a tech binding.
    Because of this dual use, I only have one boot I regularly use, it's the Crispi Evo WC. It's a super stiff boot, not for everyone. If you like it a bit more forgiving, go for the Crispi EVO.
    2020 update: I love the Bishop BMF a lot. So much that I mounted them on my Route 88 to patrol. This is still the ski I use almost every days.

    Just to echo you....
    My son lives in Alaska and goes on multi-day back country trips. He is on the Crispi Evo (not world cup) and uses the Meidjo 2.1. He also has the Meidjo alpine heel piece because he usually drags a sled full of gear/food/fuel. It's rare, but there are times in his application where the heel hold down comes in very handy with a sled. He swears by the 4FRNT Hoji's in this application. I have been on TX comps - found the TX pros to be too soft - and have the Crispi Evo's on order to replace them. Really looking forward to getting them, but didn't feel I needed the World Cup version.
    I'm also really looking forward to your review of the Lynx! Based on my research, I can retrofit my older skis that have Freedom bindings to the Lynx, using the farthest aft screw holes resulting in the binding being only about 10mm further aft, which is acceptable to me. The screw placement, in width, is exactly the same. For new skis, I'm also going with the Meidjo!
    All of my sons' bindings, and mine, are mounted on inserts. First, I think it's nice to be able to move them and secondly, they are bomb proof.....you are NOT going to pull the bindings off a ski, 50 km backcountry!
    I'm also researching the "resQski" electronic ski finder. Again, losing a ski in a minor slide when days back could be catastrophic and these are intriguing. I'm in Utah and don't go far back, but there are days where you can definitely lose a ski. I wonder if you've heard of or tried these?
    Thanks for all the good info!

    I see on BD website that if you mount tele bindings on the Helio sks it voids the warranty. Also i have read reviews that people have been pulling the binding out of the ski. Thoughts???

    • @Absolutetelemark
      @Absolutetelemark  Před 5 lety

      @David, Yes it voids the warranty. I took the chance 3 years ago and never had any problem. I have a good technician, I think it makes a huge difference when mounting telemark bindings

    Thanks René to show us your 2019 Quiver!!! Is Route 88 could be considered a good continuation to my BD Aspect who are now to much floppy? I also Telemark at Le Massif and Aspect was awesome all around ski, lightweight, love it... but this guys was tire now!! Next ski will be also mount with 22D Vice.
    Your Opinion will be greatly appreciated!!!

    • @Absolutetelemark
      @Absolutetelemark  Před 5 lety

      I think it's a fair comparaison yes. The Aspect has changed a lot over time too, so it actually depends on your exact year model. The Route series is better build for sure. They are now made in Austria and I saw the difference in the Helios Series

    René... question about spring stiffness... I realised when I am in powder that if i get to much pressure on my ski tip even my lead leg heel lifts and being in both boots on the toes is not really great for balance... but I don’t wanna get into the bad habit of leaning back and having an awful posture... if I stiffen up the spring I am worried that my uphill ski tip will dig into the snow too deep therefore softer would be better, but the softer I would go to easier my fault can happen... eg soft powder and you cross another skiers track where the snow is way more dense than expected...
    What is your experience on spring stiffness on its own and in maybe combination with the boot stiffness?
    Maybe you could do a video on how and why you set up your binding as you do? Guess there are more than me interested in your experience...
    Thank you...
    By the way... love your 7 flaw series... start every season watching them a couple of times...

    • @Absolutetelemark
      @Absolutetelemark  Před 5 lety +2

      @Florian Redecsy I have to agree that a stiff spring setup have more chance of creating some tip digging. But I also found that it depends greatly on the boot, binding, ski combo. If you could have a ski that's more flexible, with a big shovel tip and it would greatly reduce that effect. Same for the boots. If they are softer, it reduces the energy transferred to the tip. Technically, shortening your telemark stance will also reduce the amount of pressure you put on the uphill ski tip. This problem is really the counter effect of all the great power we have gained from the modern super active binding. Hope this helps

    How do the Crispi boots fit? I have an old pair of BD Seeker boots that are getting pretty blown out. I could try on Scarpa boots but no Crispi dealers near me so curious how they fit or if there is another brand they are similar to to try on before I buy.

      I just started skiing the Evo WC boots. Nice big toe box, much roomier in the forefoot than my 2015/16 Scarpa T1 boots. I think the toe box would be roomier than the Seekers, but not positive on that. Solid boots. The tongue liner (as opposed to the wrap-around liner) has laces, and that seems really archaic to me, but there ya go. I wouldn't recommend that liner.

      Mikko Pelkonen But you must remember, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. In a perfect world the Evo boots would weigh 1300g and still shred. Agree with your statement but the Evo ski the best of all tele boots much better than any heel actuated binding because they generate far less tip pressure than any 75mm binding and that’s not debatable, sorry!
      I still have TX Pros for my BC plus 2012 Scarpa F1’s (green with bellows) at 1220g that I ski with my 445g TTS bindings. I’m also working on a frakenboot with Scarpas blessings. I’m modding my TXP boots and Alien-ating them with Alien tour levers, cord actuated top buckle (like my F1), chopping the cuff down, and eliminating two buckles. My estimates are they should be 1400g and tour like an Alien but be able to rip tele turns at will. Gotta expand the horizons! Good skiing to you!

      absolutetelemark I’m sure the Lynx will be good. I trust 22D to deliver a good product and that’s why they are late delivering. Making sone late revisions based on test feedback. Hey Rene, Re you still skiing the Outlaw X on any of your skis?
      I’ve put inserts in 3 pairs of skis with the Outlaw (and now Lynx pattern) and keep extra hammerheels mounted on those skis. Then I can just pull the six screws and swap the binding over. I have two light weight BC skis Blizzard Zero G 95 and Voile Buster drilled for the Meidjo 2.1 with inserts. I use these for BC and guiding work along with my Voile V6BC and TTS (sub 1 lb.) bindings. A good and deep ski season to all and happy new year!
