Mortal Kombat would've worked so good with MCU treatment. make several movies to slowly introduce some characters first.
- one movie focuses on special forces and Black Dragon. here they can introduce Sonya, Jax, Kano, Kabal, maybe even Tremor and the rest of the Black Dragon.
- another movie about the rivalry between Lin Kuei and Shirai-Ryu. here we'll get introduced to Scorpion and Sub-Zero. maybe they can throw in Smoke, Frost, or Kenshi into the mix. maybe even Sektor and Cyrax.
- another one about shaolin monks and the outworld. other than Liu Kang, Kung Lao and Raiden, they can bring in Kitana, Jade, Mileena, and maybe some tarkatans.
then finally all the characters can have a brutal showdown in the tournament. with Johnny Cage appear later.
I absolutely agree. Being a fan of the MK video games for 20 years i was disappointed in the movie.

My favorite part of the movie is Subzero walking down the street manipulating snow. That was freaking awesome! Cole should have turned into Scorpion though. I mean come on!

@@Revstarallstar I know he is not hero material but maybe he'll rise in the next one. But yes he is the worse in this one 😂😂. It's just that maybe this is the only way we can see scorpion again. Because bringing back scorpion from hell would undermine the last fight in this movie. So that's why.
It would be cool if he signed a 5 movie contract because they plan to make some spin offs... maybe about how the feud between Scorpion and Sub Zero started

- Sub-Zero/Bi Han later turns into Noob Saibot in the story. Those five movies are either spinoffs or he just turns into Noob Saibot.

TBF I think that's your fairly standard franchise actor contract. It's not like the studio has 5 sequels in development or greenlit or anything.

They didn't have to dumb down any character to Cole's level. Cole doesn't need to be there lol! They missed the whole point of Mortal Kombat which is why story matters. It's earths warrior's journey but in the end Lui Kang is champion. The movie from 95 followed the group on there journey not just Lui Kang. All they had to do is have Lui Kang find earths warrior's that Raiden sees as worthy. Then build they way up to recruiting Scorpion from hell to bust Subzero head. Anything is better then what they produced. So people waited over 20 years for a prequel that's average at best lol. They need to pull the trigger in the sequel after this and blown us away. I'm not impressed seeing this because I know they can do better. That screen should be covered in red with a great story and better fighting backing MK2 to make up for this.Look At kung fu hustle or Legend with Jet Li fighting in those films are fast and has impact just like Mortal Kombat games just add gore. Do that and not this.

I don't think making it Liu Kang or Jonny Cage would have worked as well as any of the other characters you can find on the Mortal Kombat Wiki page which already have some sort of back story, & featured in some games. I know I'm a year late to comment :(

Wow, who knew the best things about the movies are the ones that actually have something to do with the games (such as Scorpion and Sub-Zero's rivalry), and the worst things would be this nearly created character nobody cares about?

he was in a clinch during his mma fight when his daughter says use your uppercut....nope...not possible...bad editing..very bad editing in the end...they gave their all and it got chopped really bad
There's almost no martial arts in the martial arts movie. There's the first couple minutes and then a couple minutes at the end. Even the end, once in the ring. Martial arts end. Jax vs hammer guy. No martial arts, just basic punching. Lui Kang vs Kabal, no martial arts, Kabal is just zipping around. Kung lao vs wing girl, no martial arts, he just stands still and jumped on her back. Jax vs subzero, martial arts for about 30 seconds and Jax arms gone. Sonya vs Kano, no martial arts. She just runs around the house. Cole vs goro, no martial arts. Cole gets thrown into a barn and runs around, gets his power and wins. The fights were pathetic.
The reason for introducing Cole is because if they pick an og character and focus him as the centre of these champions, it would be a disgrace for other characters because there are many characters in the good side. The only way to balance the importance of good characters and bad characters and still focus on a single main character is to introduce a new one..
The way I made logic of Scorpion able to speak any english, is because the point of their bloodline connection with the blade now having both of their blood on it.....it acted like a conduit for Scorpion to connect to his newer generation blood relative. Cole speaks English.
And right after, Cole seems to understand what Hanso said because of the same mystical connection, even if Cole never spoke Japanese.
It's like they are communicating through the blood magic. If that makes sense....
Introducing Cole as fresh blood was smart, because he is a character for the newer generations to feel a connection to, the way the older ones felt about Lui Kang or how the white males felt about Johnny Cage. A fresh faced new Asian action lead is logical for this franchise.
Cole is the one realistic character to relate to. He's been fighting uphill to get ahead and feel confidence in himself. A sense of purpose, perhaps...
There are many teenagers that can relate to that. The old heads that have been around awhile have been slinging hate at Cole because he isn't a champion from the tournaments already. Why? They all had to start in and build themselves up over time. And, apparently the fighters have lived for hundreds of years, so of course they had time to be pros.
People seem to not understand that this was a promo movie to gage the public's response to wanting this franchise, and to WB to show them a sample of what they can do, if only the studio puts some real money behind them. This way, they can actually do a longer, full on tournament movie.
Having Cole be relatable to his ancestor because of their love for their families....which strengthens their bonded will to protect their families, is what's going to fuel Cole to keep fighting to keep them safe.
You guys aren't seeing past your own nostalgia to see where the story connections carry the next movie.
For the budget they had, this movie is great....and a step up from the original. Imo.
Bruh....no....just no. It's not about nostalgia. It's about being able to pay omage to what the characters really are. Alsmost none of the characters are the same to their video game counterparts. They just made a movie for people wo don't understand the video games at all. It sucks as a video game movie. And it's SUPPOSE to be a video game movie and nothing else. If u wanna make a normal movie with cool fights in it. Don't call it Mortal Combat. It might be better than the original MK movie. But that bar was set PRETTY freaking Low. It's almost impossible to make a worse movie than that. But the movie itself is still pretty bad

Quan-Chi killed scorpion's family not subzero and that's how scorpion and sub zero resolved there conflict and also Bi Han needs to die to become noob saibot and if everyone died then they all come back the same, it wouldn't make since for Bi Han to come back as noob saibot also mileena is the clone of katana who isnt in the movie made by shao khan who isnt in the movie and i feel like the dynamic between them if explored correctly could be an excellent addition and id love to see it in the movie but no we have heap of garbage aswell as a half baked storyline.....highly disappointed

Raiden rescued a "baby girl" when Scorpion was killed by Sub-Zero in the beginning.
A few seconds later we come to know that the baby girl grew up to become a male MMA fighter. And even has a wife.

This was the absolute worst MK movie and its because it was incredibly disrespectful to the source material.
I completely understand why Ed Boon wanted nothing to do with this movie and refused to even be in the credits.

This was a very stupid and amateur attempt at what should have been slam-dunk. Kano and Skorpion were the only snippets of greatness for me in this garbage pile of a film, and they weren't enough to make me gaf about whatever future this franchise hopes it has.
The movie is pure trash except for sub zero. it just blew past so fast and frankly so boring.
I hated this mortal Kombat movie plot story and writing is dumb Cole is dumb they could have used lue Kang or Johnny cage or even Sonya
The movie was a big disappointment.
