    Pretty insane Undervolts on this bad boy. Almost certainly struck Silicon Lottery Gold. This is a beast. Might be in the top 5% of Intel chips from this generation, even eclipsing Intel desktop chips.. Would be amazing with Liquid Metal, probably wouldn't even thermal throttle at all with the Undervolt.. Game temps were looking solid though, rarely eclipsing the 80's.

      Sorry for the wall of text.....
      im running +225 core OC and +800 ram OC for the GPU in MSI Afterburner. SO far the laptop has been doing well for me as well. For cincebench I got up to 36k one time but average 33k. Im getting a little above 22k in timespy for the gpu. I get good performance in every game that I play even at 4k on my desk monitor. Truthfully, thats all I can really ask for. To me, the only other laptop I may have considered is an eluktronics 4090 laptop. However, I have the mech 17gp gen 1 and I hate the body style. I will say, the eluktronics is very very quiet on air or water. The MSI is really quite loud. A sacrifice for an exceptionally cool running laptop and nearly the best performing.
      Steel series software has always been trash in my opinion. However, I am indeed able to control all my lights. Maybe a total uninstall and reinstall? The MSI version is nothing special, you can download the steelseries gg software off the steelseries site. To my knowledge, there is no difference. I know for certain that it will detect your msi lights and keyboard lights. Or at least it did on my. I wish you luck!
      By far my largest complaint is how hard it is to remove the bottom panel to add storage. What a joke it is. I thought lenovo laptops I take apart for work were annoying.... NOPE! Really quite disappointing.

    @20:45 "I really hope Msi makes this easier in future iterations.. When its kind of a pain in the butt to take off"
    Couldn't agree more. I really hate how much of a pain in the ass the Msi laptops like the Raider(GE)/Vector(Gp) are to open. Asus isn't much better with the Strix/Scar, but atleast they removed their deadly ribbon cable from last gen. Miss the days when one just had to unscrew some screws and one could easily access the back without any risk of causing permanent damage.
    Even Gizmo who has many years of experience opening up laptops, and has opened hundreds of them, with a dedicated toolkit, struggles with it a bit. For the average user its much less pretty.. Many undoubtedly give up/don't even bother trying, which forfeits upgradability and limits their ability to clean the fans of dust and the like.

      I agree 100% been doing this for years myself too. I kept thinking to myself “how is this thing gonna hold up when I do maintenance/dusting every 3-6 months?” The bottom panel is disgustingly flimsy. It’s not something you wanna open up more than once per year. I returned mine and got an Aorus 17x instead. Btw the raider ge76 was nothing to write home about but it was much easier for me to take apart and put back together than the ge78. I’ve taken my ge76 apart at least a dozen or so times over the past 3 years without issue or worry putting it back together.

      @@crysis348 The Aorus 17x I did have for about 2 weeks prior to returning it. It was honestly great, it had great thermals, the build quality was superb and the performance was great. albeit Gigabyte restricts the CPU max TDP by a lot (you're lucky to see 80 watts on the CPU max sustained for 2 min, it's that neutered) Meaning you will see lower CPU performance in CPU intensive tasks. But that wasn't even why I returned it (because for all gaming and regular real world use the Aorus 17x was superb) I ended up returning it because the display panel on the Aorus 17x was only 300 nits or so, which I think is just absolutely not good enough for the price of these 4090 laptops. Which is a shame because I still feel the Aorus 17x *is* the best from a thermal design and it felt really solid, I loved it other than the subpar display that was on it. That being said, I switched to the Asus SCAR 16 which has a much higher quality display, and Asus allows the full TDP of the i9 CPU that's on it.
      I would say stay away from the MSi GE78HX if you like to crack open the laptop every few months for cleaning or want to upgrade the RAM/SSD's etc. the GE78HX is really the most stressful thing to take the cheap plastic off of from the bottom. The Asus SCAR 16 is all plastic but it at least comes apart easily and nicely. Plastic isn't bad if it's not handled poorly like on the GE78HX. The problem with the GE78 is that the bottom shell envelopes around the sides, which means it will snag the motherboard from the USB or audio interfaces on the side, and the shell is very light weight, and cracks easily with minimal flex when servicing the laptop. I returned it immediately to Newegg the next day. I've been working on laptops since I was young and I've personally serviced cheaper laptops than the GE78 that were easier to tear down. MSi really screwed up on the external design this gen in my honest opinion. And I say that as someone who owns and loves an MSI Ge76 Raider from a few years ago. I am just not a fan boy and I go with the specs, features, and how easy they are to maintain.
      If screen brightness isn't super important to you, I would *highly* recommend the Aorus 17x over the MSi GE78HX if gaming is all that matters to you. It's really a superb laptop honestly. And it's honestly insane to see such excellent temps in super intensive games, Gigabyte has one of the best vapor chamber designs and fan placement as well as them utilizing phase change material rather than thermal paste or liquid metal which is so effective coupled with their vapor chamber they use. the cooling solution on the Aorus 17x is honestly better than the ugly pipe and fan design on MSi's Big boy Titan laptops and I know I am not the only one saying that.
      If screen brightness is more important to you, I would look at the Lenovo Legion pro 7i or the Asus SCAR 16. As those are built very nicely and are meant to be serviced/maintained for people who want to clean them or upgrade them. Plus they are just superb 16 inch laptops with fantastic bright displays. Keep in mind the Lenovo Legion Pro 7i will max out at 500 nits. and the Asus SCAR 16 will be 500 nits SDR and 900-1000 nits in HDR mode.
      I would say shop around, do some research out side of my own personal opinions, and go with what *you* believe will be the best choice for you. It's a very competitive market this gen, and all of them are missing *something* and all of them *have* something the other doesn't.
      Bottom line, Aorus 17x has the best thermals, is built nicely, and is sleek and thin. It just misses the mark for me with the dim display (although it's very color accurate, I will give it that)
      Really you can't go super wrong whether you go with either the Asus SCAR 16/18, Lenovo Legion Pro 7i , or the Aorus 17x. I would honestly say those are my 3 favorite laptops this gen. And so far, I have been very happy with the Asus SCAR 16 as my preferred choice this gen. It just ticks all the boxes for me.

    @GizmoSlipTech - thanks for all your great videos, I've been watching a lot of them the last week or so trying to decide what new laptop to get.
    I'm a very much leaning towards this MSI Raider with a 4090 in it. My question for you is I've seen a lot of people comment on reddit that every say 6 months to a year or so that they are changing the thermal paste on the CPU. Some are stating the stock TP will not do a good job controlling heat. Some are saying that it degrades in time and needs to be changed. And they're saying as you go forward using this laptop the temperatures rise because of that that risks the hardware. I'm not an expert on this topic, but does changing the thermal paste on the CPU for this laptop or any gaming laptop seem like general maintenance as they're trying to indicate?
    I had my last MSI GT72 for 7 years before I messed the motherboard somehow repeatedly rebooting it trying to get into the BIOS. It ran warm but never failed. And obviously it didn't have this type of hardware but I've never heard of general maintenance being having to change the thermal paste on a laptop CPU. Do you have any thoughts on that?
    I know I've seen you review some laptop cooling pads slash trays.... which obviously is an alternative for keeping the temperatures down. Am I just running into the opinions of extreme users or is this valid thought? (Many of them are also underclocking which I've personally never done but it might be something I do down the line.)

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  Před 9 měsíci +1

      It depends on what MSI used inside. I believe they used PTM7950, which is rated to last the life of the laptop, according to some users, although I would have my doubts. Thermal paste does degrade over time typically (including liquid metal, although more slowly), although certain types should hold much longer than others. If temps are bad after six months, I'd say check your fans for dust before repasting. An initial repaste is not a bad idea if you don't have good temps off the get go. Regular paste lasts 2-3 yerars, PTM7950 and liquid metal should last longer. If temps start getting terrible, then check for dust, then repaste if that did not help. Asus claims 10 year LM application. Time will tell if their estimate is accurate for laptop usage.
      I should ask MSI how long they believe it will last.

    • @GizmoSlipTech
      @GizmoSlipTech  Před 11 měsíci +1

      That doesn’t seem right unless its under minor load with no fans at all, or under heavy load with max fans. Maybe needs a cpu paste replacement if its 90c while truly idle. I would recommend monitoring how many watts are going into the cpu to see how much heat is being generated. If low wattage + high temps, then probably bad cpu paste or something else, like blocking airflow or something

      @@GizmoSlipTech Thank you for your answer! I guess a lot of backdoor activities were done on the beginning (updates, etc.) now in real idle stays in 50-60 which I guess it's fine. Now I'm GPU rendering and after a while, CPU is 90-99C with only 43% processing, not sure if that's OK. GPU meanwhile stays at 86C max even with 100% usage.

    This years laptops are garbage. I have an RTX3080 laptop, and the numbers from the new gen are so disappointing I can’t even consider the new gen..
    Take that and consider it. I have an RTX3080 laptop and I’m not even considering a 40 series at all. Garbage generation improvements. Literally the 40’s trash is trash.
    Alienware X17R1
    RTX3080, I9-11980HK, 64gb RAM, 4K 120hz.
    I’m not talking shit from the low end. The 40 Series as not the chips we wanted. It’s actually embarrassing to think they can advertise a 4090. I’ll bet it’s not an upgrade from base 3080.
    We want laptops as the TOP. Sad hardware,

      So your 3080 laptop can hit 19k+ on timespy? And your laptop can run Cyberpunk 2077 at the highest settings above 60fps at 2k? And let's not talk about 4k here, your laptop can't even run it at full settings with dlss performance at that resolution.
      You are a very special person.

    • @ChryslerLeBaro
      @ChryslerLeBaro Před rokem

      @@lil_brumski It’s a garbage Gen Broseph. The biggest selling point is not performance…. It’s making fake frames to pretend you can generate real ones.
      I can run 4K 120fps at Ultra on MWII with Quality DLSS. No fake frames, no nonsense.
      At the worst, 4K Ultra maxed to the nuts with no DLSS hits 60fps. The RTX40 laptops can only best this by 20%… Wow. That’s shit.
      75Fps Ultra no DLSS? That’s trash performance improvement. It’s bad enough that 4K is not a screen option on ANY of the laptops available. There’s a reason.
      The reason is, 4K 120fps is 30 series excellence…. 40 stores can only fake better performance.
      I’ll drop 5k+ no problem on premium hardware…. The Laptop 4090 is so sub par in comparison to it’s last gen contender, it needed a higher number to prove itself.
